Bill C is first on the board with SP+ and he is not a dink!

Wisconsin's back-to-back losses against Illinois and Ohio State briefly knocked the Badgers out of Big Ten contention, but Minnesota left the door open with its loss against Iowa. The Gophers could still make a CFP case, though, with a decisive win here and an upset of Ohio State.

You like big, burly manball? There's plenty of burliness to go around in this one, though the most intriguing matchup will take form when Minnesota decides to pass. The Gophers are dynamite through the air, but Wisconsin has one of the best pass defenses in FBS.

SP+ projection: Minnesota 29, Wisconsin 28

If you toss out the non-conf games Wisconsin's pass defense is not anywhere close to one of the best in the FBS. In fact, looking at Wisconsin message boards they are very worried about how their secondary is going to hold up against our receivers.

This secondary just gave up over 300 yards passing and 3 touchdowns to Purdue's 3rd string QB. The pass defense has definitely been fading down the stretch for the Badgers.

They will also be without a starting safety in the first half against us due to a targeting call in the Purdue game.
Also 2 more got banged up and are questionable to play. They could be very depleted.

I think the safety with the targeting might be a package guy off the bench but still not ideal against an elite passing team.

This is a case where I think stats might lie a little bit. Northwestern of all teams exposed some chinks in their armor and other teams have exploited that to varying effect. The problems (mainly) so far for teams seem to be protecting the QB, and stopping their offense. WI seems to have a knack for calling the right blitz at the right time and teams have had trouble protecting.

Nebraska and Ohio State were able to run on them but they have dual threat quarterbacks which can make all the difference. TM, the blockers, and the receivers will need to have a nice day.

Looks like most of their sacks come from their two main LBs (Orr and Baun). Seems like they use them similar to how we used Cashman.

If their secondary does have some issues would love to see us really turn the passing game loose on them. Saturday can't get here quick enough.

Since I believe this game will be tight throughout, the key match-up I'll be watching is Ciarrocca vs. Leonhard. Who is going to dial up the right plays at the right times? Hopefully Coach C is spending all day/night game planning for this one. Also wouldn't mind a professional knowledge sharing phone call with the Houston Astros this week. Lets get in their headsets!

I would expect Wisconsin is going to try and run a lot of bracket coverage against us

If they blitz their linebackers and Morgan is on with the JUMBO line in, watch out!
Gophers should light it up through the air.

Go Gophers!

There is a reason we move Johnson and Bateman into the slot a lot, makes it much harder to bracket them off the line.

Pat Forde takes the Gophers. A dink free zone thus far!

Dash pick: Minnesota 21, Wisconsin 20. The Badgers' defense that was so good for the first half of the season has been springing some leaks lately: after giving up 4.8 points and 174 yards per game in the first six games, those numbers are 25.8 points and 382 yards over the last five. If the Gophers can protect Tanner Morgan and engage their outstanding wide receivers, they should be able to make enough big plays to become the third different West Division champion in the last three years, and fourth in the last five.

I've seen the following interaction on Reddit a few times from Wisconsin fans:

"What happened to our defense? It was top 5 at the beginning of the season!"

"We started playing good teams, our defense was never that good"

I think we can light up their secondary and pass for 300+ against them.

The big thing will be if we can stop their run attack.

Why Wisconsin Will Win
The forecast for Saturday in Minneapolis? Around 36 degrees with a super-fun mixture of rain and snow.
If that’s really the case, and if this gets into a ground-and-pound game that negates the downfield passing game a wee bit, the Badgers have a massive advantage.
Minnesota has the rushing talent in the backfield, and its ground attack has gone off from time to time against the Big Ten’s weak and sad, but this Badger run defense has the ability to hold offenses to a dead stop.
Ohio State and Nebraska – those are the only two teams to have any success against Wisconsin. Ohio State is Ohio State – Minnesota doesn’t have JK Dobbins – and Nebraska’s Adrian Martinez ran for a slew of big yards in a loss.
On the other side, no one on the Gopher schedule so far has the ability to power away.
Northwestern sadly sort of tried – mainly because it has no passing game whatsoever – but Penn State was able to run for over six yards per carry, and its ground attack is pedestrian at best.
It’s Wisconsin. You know what’s coming.
The Badgers have rushed for 300 yards or more in each of their last three games, and that includes powering away against a fantastic Iowa defensive front.
The team has been a wee bit shaky lately compared to what it was over the first month of the season, but it’s still No. 1 in the nation in third down conversion defense, it’s still No. 1 in time of possession, and it’s still No. 3 in pass efficiency defense against a Gopher offense that’s been living off of their efficient passing game.
However …

Why Minnesota Will Win
It’s the advice offenses need to take to heart when playing Wisconsin.
KEEP … THROWING.
The Badger pass rush is fantastic, and the numbers look great overall – teams aren’t hitting half of their passes this year against this secondary – but the stats are skewed.
No one was doing anything through the air against this D over the first half of the season, but over the last five games, everyone – including Illinois and Nebraska – has hit for 7.4 yards or more per throws with ten touchdowns and just two picks.
Iowa’s Nate Stanley was able to connect on a few big plays to get back in the game late a few weeks ago. Purdue’s third-string quarterback Aidan O’Connell threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns last week.
Minnesota’s Tanner Morgan was questionable for the Northwestern game after going through the concussion protocol, and he threw for over nine yards per pass with four touchdowns in the breezy win. His receiving corps might not have the depth and all-around talent of Ohio State’s, but Rashod Bateman and Tyler Johnson are playing as well as any tandem in the country.
So what if it’s sloppy out? The advantage goes to the receivers.
What’s Going To Happen
It’s for the Big Ten West title and a chance to play Ohio State for the conference championship.
More than that, the winner of this will likely end up in the Rose Bowl, and if Minnesota wins, it’ll be one victory away from the College Football Playoff.
This isn’t quite the Wisconsin team from the first half of the season.
On the road, it lost to Ohio State (fine) and Illinois (very not fine), and it caught a break that Nebraska went Nebraska – the Huskers were doing fine until they started to play like they remembered they weren’t very good.
The biggest difference lately is the turnover margin. Over the first six games, Wisconsin was a +9. Over the last five, it’s a -8 without winning the takeaway battle in any of those games.
The Badgers will bash, they’ll outplay the Gophers, and there will be times when they appear to have everything in hand, and then …
They’ll give the ball away.
The Gopher passing game will connect on two big plays, the defense will bend but won’t break time after time in the fourth quarter, and it’ll be on to face the Buckeyes in what will amount to a College Football Playoff quarterfinal game – at least for Minnesota.

Concensus pick is Wisconsin but Minnesota well represented.

Clucko goes Wisky this week...what does a coin toss know?

The world is against us. Every time we play somebody, they are the best at defense, running the ball and they have the best balls in the FBS.

Hmm, re CFN article I’d argue our WR room is as good or better than OSU’s based on the eyeball test and stats. They (OSU) definitely have the ground game advantage. I realize these national website guys guys can’t possibly watch all the games of every team in the country so to becomes a recruiting rankings assumption.

The wet balls factor could also affect Taylor’s spotty ball security.

If this is a one point game like some of these outlets are predicting I may not live through four quarters.

Jesse Palmer just took the Gophers on his "Virtual Lock" segment. First time he's taken an underdog all season. Oh, and he rowed the boat while making the pick.

Both pickers on the "Bigger Ten" podcast took Minnesota. They use a "confidence pick" system and they both put a medium amount on Minnesota, so fairly confident.

4 out of 7 writers at SI.com picked Minnesota, including 3 out of 4 of the most accurate on the season.

Lot of Gophers love out there this week, people. Gonna be a dogfight tomorrow, but I'm confident. SUM, RTB, GG!

Athlon chimes in with a more detailed prediction:

Final Analysis

Minnesota has the offense it needs to do some damage against one of the more stable defensive teams in the Big Ten. They have a running game that can be serviceable enough to complement a terrific passing game. They also have the home-field advantage and the confidence knowing they can beat Wisconsin after doing it in Madison last season. The Badgers may be the road favorite here, but there could be some magic in the air for the Gophers with a long-awaited division title within reach. Tanner Morgan getting in rhythm with Rashod Bateman will be the key, and a couple of big receptions by Minnesota's top receiver in the fourth quarter will help send Minnesota to Indianapolis for the Big Ten championship game.

Prediction: Minnesota 26, Wisconsin 23

Go Gophers!!
