Media predictions for Saturday's game

The problem with som of the analysis I'm seeing is that PSU and Wisconsin are pretty average this year. I asked the question in the offseason: why will PSU be better this year? They have some holes in their roster and if Hack isn't on it's trouble. They have a used tire salesman as a head coach and he's already pissing me off, sniffing around Demry Croft. The Lyin's will be good eventually but they have some rebuilding to do.

Wisconsin is Melvin Gordon and a lot of grabbing and holding away from being a 4 win team. In hindsight that close loss to LSU looks worse. LSU isn't very good this year.

Props to the nerds for doing what needed to be done to put away these down teams, but I think we get a comfortable win tomorrow.

Nicely done.

I think you are right about PSU and Wisconsin being pretty average this year however I still think both of them are better then Michigan this season for what it's worth.

All this first place talk is so overblown right now it is getting ridiculous. Problem is the rest of the games this weekend all suck so the only thing to really discuss in the BIG is the Northwestern / MN battle for first place. Until we get to about the midpoint of the conference season it really doesn't matter much who is sitting in first because they are typically one loss from being stuck in the middle of the parck.

per Shama:

“J” Leman predicts a close game tomorrow when the Gophers, 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten Conference, play Northwestern, 3-2 and 2-0, at TCF Bank Stadium. But the former University of Illinois All-American who is now a Big Ten Network football analyst told Sports Headliners he predicts the Wildcats will win.

Leman followed Northwestern’s 0-2 start this season, losing to California and Northern Illinois in Evanston, but since then the Wildcats have won three consecutive games including a dominating performance against Penn State on the road and a home win last Saturday over nationally-ranked Wisconsin. Leman, who was the analyst on BTN’s coverage of the Northwestern-PSU game, said this is a “tale” of two Wildcat teams and the group now on a three-game winning streak is featuring an “opportunistic defense” that stops teams from scoring at 20 yards and closer to the goal line.

“They’ve never been a shut down, lock’em down Michigan State style defense,” Leman said. “They bend a lot. They’re not going to give up a big play. …They’re going to make you work all the way down the field.”

Go Gophers!!

When you look at Northwestern's record over the last 20-25 years it is quite amazing. They have certainly earned their nickname.
In the last 20 years they have won 81% against Minnesota where the margin was within 10-pts. They have often "upset" Minnesota teams that were favored.
Minnesota has never beat Northwestern at TCF, and has not beat Northwestern in Minneapolis in over a decade.
As a rule, if you let this team play with you score for score, they almost always find a way win in the end.

Come to think of it, it does seem a bit Twilight Zone like for this game to be for first place.

We've played ONE game in the B1G while NW has played TWO. First place is almost meaningless at this point in the season.

Do I want the Gophers to win? Absolutely. But, talk of 1st place, by anyone, at this point in the season is just the effects of hitting the pipe too hard. Let's enjoy the game today and cross our fingers that the good guys from MN come out with the win.

We've never lost under Kill leading at halftime. We've never won losing at halftime, either.
