Jerry Kill was the pick of the litter. We know Maturi met with a number a number of coaches. As he says, the "net was cast wide" in this search. Maybe Kill was interviewd early in the process, and nobody else measured up. I have a VERY, VERY hard time believing that Golden, Hoke, Calhoun, Coach N.... all of them would have turned down Minn. JM must have seen something in Kill. And Bruininks must have interviewed him as well. We could have had Leach, maybe Fullmer, and probably Trestman. JM knew that. He also knew he had Horton as a fallback guy. Would Kill have been the pick over a guy like Riley or Petersen? Probably not. But my bet is that he was the pick of all the candidates interviewed.

I really like the quotes so far. He sounds like a hard working, non flashy, non arrogant, hard -nosed, high-expectation football coach. I believe recruits will respond to him, and his players as well.

Remember - he kicked our behinds this year.

I like the choice.

Its not hard to believe they turned down Minnesota at all. Golden is more than comfortable at Temple waiting for his chance at the Penn State job. Remember he took his name out of the Vandy running.

Calhoun took his name out of the Colorado gig and he seems content at his Alma mater

Hoke was just using the Gopher as leverage for more money.

I don't know if coach N. was ever contacted.

Hoke also said publicly that he was never offered the job. My point is that there is a good possibility that Kill was truly the #1 choice amongst that level of candidate. And if he wasn't? Who cares? This game is a crap shoot, and nobody knows how anyone will turn out. My Alma Mater hired Bobby Ross a few years ago. Big name. Some would say coaching legend. National title winner. He was a complete flop. So you just don't know...

I'm not a Maturi apologist at all. But I am behind this coach 100%.
