Maybe a competent coach makes the portal easier, just saying.

Maybe a competent coach knows what to look for to recruit.
I like who he has brought in so far. Johnson would bring in low level players that you would scratch your head on. Then half of them he wouldn't play so what was the point?
They would also be 3-4" shorter

This team will be fun to watch, already the best team since Richard left and we don't have 5 players yet!

2 things -- 1. The portal is much more competitive now than even a few years ago. Everyone is using it now.
2. Niko's players improve -- over time with him and moving from other programs. Particularly in 3 point shooting efficiency.

We gotta have practice players
I think there, you want to find guys 10-13 or 15 (if that is the new number) younger developmental guys that could become something in the system. Ben brought in some guys who were old and then didn't use them.

Prior to us getting any commits, I didn't expect much improvement over last year in terms of actual record in the upcoming year. The first two transfer recruits haven't done anything to change my mind. Does that mean Ben Johnson shouldn't have been fired? Of course not.

I liked what I saw from Colorado State in the games I watched late in the year so I think a good hiring choice was made. But, this is another rebuilding year and Niko isn't John Calipari, a guy who can make an immediate upgrade to an institution's recruiting quality.
Making any recruiting comparison to Calipari is foolish. All he showed at each stop is he could lure in guys with cash

Yeah, he was one of those players brought in for apparently no reason other than to warm a bench. Even when we were getting eaten up and needed a big body....nope.
Ben wanted to play 7 guys. He didn't want competition for playing time. We got guys who play and guys who don't....that's Ben's role definition for players.

I think depth is a not-so-sneaky problem for just about every team in this era. There is a small number of competent players in the portal who are willing to accept a lesser role when there are other teams who need them to play a larger role. Finding players 10-15 in the rotation is getting harder. And players 6-9 will transfer next year if they’re getting recruited over.

Almost like you gotta recruit HS players every couple of years for depth knowing they'll probably leave then wash, rinse and repeat
