Maturi told Kill no several times when approached about the cancelling UNC series

Is there a way to hide threads that contain the word "Doogie?"

good for maturi for standing up to kill. it feels like teague is a push-over so far, between this and the tubby contract extension where we handed over all the leverage to tubby when we had it all.

Why is this coming out now? If Maturi is leaking stuff, his employment with the U should end tomorrow.

Agreed. I can't imagine Doogie would have held on to this tid-bit, which means that Maturi is completely undermining Teague. Lovely.

Joel Maturi so utterly lacks guile that he very well may have made this statement without understanding the manner in which it damages his successor.

Looking at the schedule for next year I'm very glad they cancelled that game.

We can expect SJSU to be quite tough (lost to Stanford by three), Indiana is developing a very strong offense, Penn State is good. Both of those cross-division games will be tougher than Illinois and Purdue were this year.

We're now concerned with Indiana and San Jose State? Wow.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut on the good day. Maturi did significant harm to the football program with his moronic hire of Brewster, and while I agree with him if he wouldn't let us buy out UNC, I am appalled that he is either so dishonorable that we would leak this to undermine Teague or that he is so dumb that he wouldn't know that leaking this was a problem (honestly, I think the second one is the most likely).

Yep the excuses for why we are going to suck next year are already being lined up. On the subject of Maturi turning down Kill's request, good for him. I don't know how Doogie uncovered this, I doubt it was direct from Maturi but glad to hear he did that right given his many other mistakes. Some good notes about facilities and what not in that article.

I vote clueless.

Hard to say if this info is coming from Maturi or someone else that was aware of the situation, but being that it concerns Maturi...........well...

When you do as bad of a job as he did, you lose the benefit of the doubt.

Are we certain the series would have required a buyout had Maturi obliged Kill right away?
If the sole reason for the 800,000 is that Maturi didn't want to make any decisions as a lame duck AD then he's even worse at his job than everyone thought he was.
And that's saying something!
If not, and the buyout was required regardless, then at the least he wasn't supporting his coach, which is bad enough.
I know most fans and media want tough schedules and premier opponents, but if part of Kill's recipe for eventual success here is to load up on cupcakes for the first few years and parlay those wins into bigger and better things then I don't see what the big deal is.
It's all about a long term solution to our program's longstanding woes, not immediate gratification or more likely comfortable consolation.

You really tried hard to gerrymander your response to make Maturi at fault.

I make no bones about how much I despise Maturi as AD.
But if it's ok to bring this subject up(it is), then it's ok to ask what the reasoning and circumstances were behind maturi rejecting Kill's requests.
I'd really like to know if this series could have been rescheduled or cancelled at any point without the buyout, and if so then did Kill made said requests early enough to avoid the money hit the U took.

The series didn't need to be cancelled bottom line. Everyone disliked Maturi but making this out to be some failed loyalty pledge to Kill is ridiculous.

Kill wanted it cancelled. You can disagree, but it's not your job to resurrect this football program.
Maturi rejected the proposal. I'd like to know why?
That's fair. If it simply was that the buyout was something Maturi wouldn't do for Kill then fine.
If there was an opportunity to cancel the series without the financial hit within the timeframe of Kill requesting it, then that's a bad deal on Maturi.
Maturi cancelled and scheduled a hell of alot of games for Brewster, why was this one an issue. It's fair to ask.
If anything, this is the problem with blurb writing like Doogie has here, no explanation or details given.

We're not exactly a top team you know. San Jose State is currently ranked. They likely will not start out ranked next year or be ranked when we play them but they may be just as tough as they are now. When is the last time the Gophers beat a ranked team? I'm not wearing my maroon and gold glasses when it comes to predicting wins the next two years with the schedule.

I took a look at their roster and they will only lose 4 d linemen, 2 o linemen, 1 cb, 5 rb, 2 s, and 2 te to graduation. On paper it appears that much of the team will be returning and they have the depth to replace the graduating players. I think rb is a fairly easy position to replace in cali. They lose the most on D so that may be a weakness for them next year depending on how many of the players they lose were starters.

In any of those situations was their a payment of $800,000 being made from our University to the school we were cancelling with? Obviously no way to prove this without a direct quote from Maturi but I would bet if there was no buyout involved he would have cancelled the North Carolina series. Maturi had his faults but he he had been here long enough to know how everyone would react to the idea of us not only cancelling the series but also shelling out 800K to do it.

Revelation? Revealing a secret? You mean a "secret" like it gets cold in the Winter? Kill has said that he's been lobbying for the cancellation of this series since he got the job.

No, Kill and Norwood could have had something very, very dirty that they wanted hidden. Possibly something that would have landed them both in a Federal Prison. That something could have been known by the North Carolina A.D. That seems to be the most logical reason for paying that kind of money NOT to play a game. The A.D. could have demanded $1,000,000 to keep quite. Kill couldn't come-up with the $1,000,000 on his own. He needed at least $800,000 from somewhere. Maturi knew that canceling the series and paying $800,000 to do it, would have been one of the biggest P.R. blunders in the history of a school that that is full of them. He said no.

Teague though came in thinking that nobody knew his involvement in whatever sordid thing that might have happened. Kill's scheme to shut this thing down needed at least another $800,000 to work. Norwood resisted for awhile, then capitulated. The $1,000,000 breakdown may have been Kill $100,000, Teague $100,000 and the University of Minnesota $800,000.

The scary thing for them is that Central Gopher apparently thinks that the San Jose State A.D. might know what happened too? :banghead::banghead:

That's what I'm asking. What was the reasoning behind it.
One of Maturi's most major faults was his inability to make bold decisions and act with directness. You bet he would have cancelled it if there was no buyout. I'd bet he didn't want to make any decisions before the new AD came in. Either way it would be good to know if the delay upped or caused the buyout amount.
What a #%$ storm this whole deal is though. Whoever leaked that tidbit should be fired.

So.......what does everyone think of Adam Weber's career? Do you think having four different offensive coordinators hurt him?

We are already establishing a defense for a potential loss to San Jose State next season.
