Yes he did and I was at the game. We lost 13-7. Holtz couldn't get out of that one and was forced to play it. He made the most of it and did a good job, though. Holtz DID cancel out of playing Texas, BYU and one other powerhouse I can't remember because we weren't quite ready for it at the time. His words were something like, "we don't need to prepare for the air raid by going through a mine field." This was one of the first things he did as a coach because the schedule was loaded with big name teams that we weren't ready for.
Our non conference schedule next year includes Middle Tenn. St., South Dakota, N. Illinois, and USC. In 2011 we play NDSU, New Mexico St., Miami (OH) and USC. It's not like our non conference schedule is loaded by any means. I don't see anything wrong with play a top-tier team in the non-conference schedule. It would different if we were playing USC, Texas, and North Carolina all in the same year.
Once you get an established program going though, these are good games to schedule because they will give you national exposure and huge recognition if you can pull it off. It's pretty stupid though to schedule a game where you write it in as a loss before you even play it. Maybe you're writing it off as a loss but I sure am not. There is a good chance we will lose, but who's to say it's a sure thing. I bet almost everyone in the country thought Washington had no chance of beating USC last year and look what happened. There are plenty of other teams we could schedule that we would at least have a shot at and still upgrade our schedule. OK, flame away and say how stupid I am.....I know, Brewster is a great coach and he is taking us to the Rose Bowl.....
