Maturi: Dungy Not Coming to Coach U; doesn't want Brew to change enthusiasm

Interesting on the insider stuff, though again, I have a feeling this isn't a unique trait for a head coach to have. I've always felt that Brewster has treated fans very well, and he's well liked among the players from what I've heard.
The losing(mediocre) attitude is a serious problem in this state.

Mason, Gutey and Holtz were never very popular among the many people in the Administration either. Only Voeltz and maybe Robinson would have beat them in a "who would you like to get rid of poll". I'd guess even Gentleman Jim Wacker had some detractors over there.

You want to be popular with the Administration as a Coach at the University? Never ask about getting kids in school, never talk to a teacher about grades, volunteer to have your pay cut to "normal" levels, never ask for new buildings, never complain about the buildings you have, never brag about them to people who can't get their "upgrades" funded, never complain about parking and never complain about how your facilities are being "kept up".

Even then people who work for the "U" will still complain about you.

A "bravo" though to the people who were able to turn a post about a rather positive article about Maturi's thoughts on Brewster into a referendum on Brewster's popularity on campus.

Bravo "dislikers", well played!:clap::clap:

If he is needs to be abbrasive to fix this attitude....yeah! We've sorely needed it.

He has been nothing but great to myself...my family...his players have been the same to us all. The parents love him....his players do too.

This is one thing I'm genuinely curious about. What do the players think of Brewster? Obviously several media members don't care for him for various reasons. Some within the program don't care for him for various reasons. I'd love to know how his players feel. Unfortunately, I don't see any player offering up anything critical for the obvious reasons. But it would be nice to hear some honest opinions from a variety of players just to see if they're buying into his "message" or if they think it's all a bunch of crap.

Search gopherpops posts and you'll get an inkling about what players and parent's of players think about Brew.

If he's good with fans, players, and players' parents that's pretty much all that matters when you come down to it. Isn't it?

I would think his boss should probably figure in there somewhere. But we'll find out soon whether Maturi thinks that matters - or how much.

Oh, wasn't aware. Can I get the Cliff's notes version?

Players like him. Short enough?

The original post from this thread would seem to explain how his boss feels about him.

Sure, when being asked by someone who's writing it down and putting it out for the public to read. I mean, it may very well be exactly what Maturi thinks of him. Or, of course, it might not.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
Yep, everything Maturi says is just PR, it's all lies, there's no chance he's giving a real interview to quell the teeth gnashers, there's no chance he's giving very pointed responses with some critical and some positive views on Brewster.

I didn't say no chance. In fact, I said it could be the truth. But come on, don't be so naive to think that what he says to a reporter should be accepted as the irrefutable truth. I mean, let's say he hated Brewster and was planning to fire him, you wouldn't expect him to admit that at this point, would you?

Actually, I would. If he were going to fire Brewster, now would be the time to do it.

I wouldn't disagree with that timing either. But he's obviously not going to announce Brewster's firing to everyone in an interview with a reporter. So my only point was that until he actually fires Brewster, he's not going to say he's going to.

I don't think he would give an interview either way in that case. Every answer he gives is very thoughtful and logical. He's critical and supporting. I just don't buy that these two HATE each other.
Maturi is Brewster's boss, he can say or do whatever the hell he wants in public. He has no reason to be dishonest and has stated that he doesn't like to talk out of both sides of his mouth. Something about not being a Nick Saban. There's no reason to infer anything but what he's saying, it all makes too much sense.

Until I get solid examples of what Brewster is doing to be hated by "administrators" I give a big yawn to the accusations. Some "administrators" are hippie pinheads who would like nothing more than to completely remove all athletics from the University.

Brewster's job is to win and play by the rules, not be the "good guy" that everyone loves.

Well, the reason that I have to infer something else is some of the things Maturi's said to other people within the program. Was that just venting? Who knows? Has that changed? Who knows? Maturi does seem to be very genuine and truthful for the most part with the media, moreso than most, but on this particular issue he's not going to be overly critical of the coach no matter how he feels as long as he's still the head coach. If Maturi came out and blasted Brewster and dressed him down to the media, I'd think that Maturi should be fired.

Maturi was upset and embarrassed about the whole Twitter thing Brewster posted about Reusse.
Maturi was humiliated after being scolded by Brewster in front of the team.
Maturi was incensed after the KFAN dust-up caused by Brewster made Maturi look like a liar.
Maturi has warned Brewster about the way he talks to and interacts with athletic department staffers.

All of the above are true unless Maturi himself lied to the person he made these comments to.

from what i have heard from sources within the administration, brewster eats babies.

LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME!

In Maroon's defense,

I have heard the exact same thing by a couple of good friends I have in the athletic department. I don't have links and i'm not sharing their names, so everyone can take it for what it's worth. This is a message board so choose to believe what you want to believe. I have heard almost the exact things he is saying, verbatum.

Oh....and FWIW....I spend most of my time on this board defending Brewster and have been called a Brewster apologist, so don't confuse this post as some sort of Brewster-hate (i'd like to see the guy continue), I just wanted to spread what i've heard.

I will admit that I hate posts similar to this but here goes anyway, My good friends son plays another high profile sport at the U and is very good friends with several prominent football players. He has told me that the players love Brewster and his no nonsense approach about winning. they say he gets as frustrated as anyone when things do not go well but does not blame but looks for ways to improve what they are doing.

I think he is trying to change the whole attitude at the U and it rubs some people the wrong way but the most improtant people, the players appreciate it according to my "inside source"

All that sounds true but with the possible exception of Mr. Wacker when was the last Football Coach at the University who wasn't unpopular with department people or wasn't called out about it? How far back would you have to go? Salem or Stoll maybe? Don't know anything about those guys. The other guys certainly have had their share of detractors in both the Athletic Department and the Administration itself.

When Mason and Holtz left I'd guess that champagne bottles were popped by people over there.

so what's the need to post these rumors on a message board?

Some people might be interested. I understand why you aren't or why you take it with a grain of salt. Heck, most of the stuff I hear from people with "insider info", I read and don't put much stock into. So I don't blame you. But this is just a message board, it's the precise place for rumors like this.

Furthermore, I only mentioned it because I heard the exact same thing as Maroon, so maybe some people might have been interested that he's posts aren't the lone source for these "rumors".

Within the universe populated by D1 college coaches, this list looks (at least to me) like pretty small potatoes. Near as I can tell, Maturi got pretty much what he was looking for when he hired Brewster. Having lived in Minnesota my entire life, I can tell you that when you are trying to get someone to do something you will usually get a list of the possible pitfalls in the way of accomplishing the task at hand. My guess is that probably does not fly very far with an almost pathological "can do" guy like Brewster.

Good point, but I only know as far back as Mason, and he wasn't liked either.

so what's the need to post these rumors on a message board?

ummmm...that's kind of what a message board is. you post your opinion, thoughts, what you hear. if you didn't post rumors, it would be a newspaper.

and what about the dunbar firing?

it's not one particular event, it's the culmination of them. and imho, i do think that firing dunbar without maturi's permission and having the u have to pay his buyout is a pretty big deal. if i did any of these things, my boss would fire me...along with the lack of performance.

rumors are fine, but rumors that could be damaging to another person's reputation are a problem.

I'm not sure terminating one of your direct reports would be a firing offense in most organizations. (If it is you are probably in the wrong organization.)

It could if it cost your organization hundreds of thousands of dollars.
