Matthew Hurt

Hurt hit the weight room? Soft couldn’t get past Lakeville North! Not as polished as him and his Pops thought. Dude is not a grinder.

Hurt couldn't get past LN, because his supporting cast was an embarrassment compared to the LN roster.

I would think he returns to Duke. Frankly him transferring if I was an NBA GM would be a huge red flag the guy doesn’t think he can handle the competition for playing time even in college .

That is still one thing that made me not too upset he left for Duke-he could never get people around him to help him get to state. Amazing to me that he was suppposed to be so talented and one and done- and couldn't get some buddies together to work out so they could go to state. Didn't he also play with his brother for a year? And still no state trip.

Is there any merit to this topic, or sheer speculation? Anyone have a neighbor with a niece that heard something from her boyfriend?

JD Spielman said Matthew Hurt was transferring to the Gophers with him...
Ha, got it. That in another thread? Not seeing it on Twitter. Knew it had to be more than his 9 minutes this weekend.

Spielman, Hurt and Shaka Smart were all seen talking with Norwood Teague at the InterContinental hotel lobby last night when they flew in. Mark Coyle had invited them over for English Tea and truffles.

I, for one, should probably have more coffee!

They had one shot when michael was a senior. That LN game was anyone's game. I think it was anyone's game with a minute to go.

LN had Reuvers as a senior. That was their one shot, but matthew was only in 9th grade.

LN has always had more talent. Most years it wasn't even close.

Why, to ride the bench for another year? Duke will recruit over him.

He had his chance early in the year and proved he wasn't the player they thought he was. If Coach K is such a great coach, why hasn't he developed him into a better player. I have not watched a lot of Duke games, but all I remember from Hurt was seeing him standing around by the three point line with his hands out looking for a pass so he could shoot. Is that what the fabulous coach K taught him to do?

Being a 9-10 minute role player in college isn't real impressive to NBA scouts either.

Lakeville North has had a lot of D1 talent. None of them went to the U, which is annoying. JP Macura was recruited very lightly by Pitino, and that may have had a negative ripple affect on Reuvers and Wahl.

Didn't hurt Kris Humphries. He changed his mind about Duke...although it wasn't a transfer situation.

Humphries was not the only one in the relationship to change his mind. Hurt has not changed his mind about what coach to play for and if he did it will very likely not be for the coach we have.

Interesting about Humphries and K... what happened in that relationship?

Right here is my concern with you. You make it sound as though you are in communication with the Hurts or Matthew himself...otherwise you would not know this. Then you make it seem that you certainly would not recommend the "coach we have" as his next stopping point if he were to move on.
Then you tell us that you are cheering for the Gophers.

I think Pitino has been pretty darned good for the careers of Murphy, Coffey and Oturu and probably would have been better for Hurt.

Not in contact with the Hurts, If asked i would ask them what other choices he had, what kind of school he was looking for etc.. He would not need help on deciding on who the best coaches are among his choices. I can cheer for the Gophers and still give a honest opinion when asked. My word of giving honest assessments is more important to me than lying out of fandom. Who iam am as a person is more important than blind support for a team. I have it on good authority that he is not thinking of leaving Duke. It is not unusual for freshman to adjust slowly to aspects of the college game. In fact, minimum research reveals most do,including the majority of top ranked kids. What evidence is there to suggest coming here now is a good idea ?

Ok, then I guess you didn't mean it when you said that he hasn't changed his mind, because you don't actually know.

Why might he be better off here? Because the way K recruits these days, if you don't star as a frosh, he is likely going to recruit over the top of you. Maybe he'll be fine there. I am a Gopher fan and would love to see him back here whether for Pitino or a new coach. I think that he would have made a big difference here this year and we'd be in the tourney. I think he made very little difference at Duke as is shown by his declining role.

Not really, Tubby didn't recruit Macura at all. Pitino tried to recruit him but it was too late. JP committed to Xavier before Pitino even started his first season.

Time will tell if the person that told me he was happy at Duke was right about him staying and that Duke was not signing just one and done kids.Pretty obvious he did not want to play here. What makes you think he would like to right now. I would love to see him here but with clear eyes i understand why these kids pick Duke. Hell the top ranked kids from Virginia pick Duke, UNC, Kentucky year after year. So what, go get guys that Want to be there, put them together and beat them a different way. When that blue blood brand comes calling kids find it as a dream come true. Kids nationally follow those programs, espn shamelessly promotes them, shoe companies influence them. Plus they have college basketball cultures as a way of life in those communities.

That is not something we are ever going to have again here. Too many other options. That's why we need all of the Gopher fans that are die hard, pushing in the same direction, cheering the program on.

I asked you a question last night that I am still hoping for an answer on (sorry if I missed it). How good of a coach was Dick Bennett in your view?

How long do you have for the Bennett answer ? It is incredibly complex because of the jobs he took, the time he took to gain traction, the players he coached, the accomplishments, those legendary clinics that literally every coach went to. Those practices that every coach wanted to see. Those unrivaled instructional videos that still sell in record, that burning fire, that humility, the intellectual thirst. That desire to take the worst jobs, the invention of the packline etc.. Tons of detail if you really want it. Then that craziness of walking away each time just when it was getting good. Never had a job where the attendance did not skyrocket, never left a job without leaving it in great position from where he got it.

If JP had already committed to Xavier, then why would he and his family have met with Pitino in his office?

I think he was a great coach. But you are exactly right, he took some tough jobs and his record suffered for it. In his final 8 years, as a veteran coach his record in conference play between Wisconsin and Washington State was 55-79. He did have that one amazing run to the final four off of a 9-9 conference season, but overall it was tough. So my point is this: there's a great coach in tough jobs. I think Pitino is a good coach, a young coach who has not hit his prime, in a very tough job. If he gets fired, he gets fired, so be it, I will trust Coyle. While he is our coach he deserves our backing and needs it. For me, I fully consider the job he has taken and how close he has been to being successful in the overall picture. We may be best to move on depending on our options, but he could still also be the best of our available options.

This job could be good. But as of now it is a coach killer without the college atmosphere you refer to and there is a tough hill yet to climb. We are going to need to find someone and stick with them through thick and thin. As Coyle recently stated, this cannot be a transitional job, where we change horses this often.
