Matt Simon has been let go

Mo is a legend we can deal with any growing pains (it’s not rocket science to coach RBs) and to your point about other conference teams wanting him the answer is absolutely no, but it’s also the answer for both of our coordinators.
Isn’t RB coach more thought of as a recruiting position than a coaching position?

The two biggest issues with the offense this year were OL and the overall play selection.

So naturally, Fleck scapegoats Simon. :ROFLMAO:

I guess he'll have to develop NFL wide receivers elsewhere!

The WR room has not been very good for quite so time now.
Jalen Smith went from a guy who was inconsistent, too many drops ... to the Rate Bowl Offensive MVP.

Wonder if he'll transfer to go with Simon?

I liked Brockington too, great blocker for sure. Will be interesting to see if he gets to a fall camp in the league.

Rate Bowl offensive MVP isn’t a very high bar…

Also, Matt Simon was also the coach when Smith had “too many drops”.

Finally, how many all-conference WRs has he had since 2019? What’s his hit rate on HS WR recruits?

And then he developed him into the bowl game offensive MVP. Did you watch the game? Some fantastic catches.

It's a massive league, competing with OSU, Oregon, etc. to make All-Conf. Are you saying that a Big Ten WR coach should be fired if they don't get an All-Conf receiver? That's going to be a lot of firings every year.

2019 was six years ago. Why wasn't he fired in like 2023?

My goodness, aren't you precious.

The position has not been very good over that time period. He’s lost far more HS recruits than he’s developed. The recruiting hasn’t been great to start.

Additionally, quantify the effect he’s had on players developing as opposed to players naturally acclimating to the speed of the game.

I'll give the coach the benefit of the doubt. Seems like an impossible and unfair metric. You could claim that all player development at all places was just due to acclimatization rather than coaching.

If it hasn't been good over that time, then why didn't he get fired in 2023? 2024? Didn't he get promoted to Co-OC, in fact?

Just seems like a weird deal.

Either gut the staff, or give them one more year to figure it out. Makes it feel oddly personal, or something, to only axes one of the three main guys.

With how he has continually passed him over for promotion to the main OC, in spite of a great playcalling performance in the 2019 bowl game, maybe there is something to that ....

People don’t always get fired when they should nor was there anything this year that indicated he shouldn’t have been let go. Managers are humans not some AI that immediately notices a trend an executes a change.

The receiver corps couldn’t win against man nor could they make a contested catch.

It will be interesting to see what Simon's future is. He is only 40 years old. I'm sure he'll have options.

Scapegoat? Your takes are hilarious...

I have long suspected you were a certain PBU and your reaction to Simon being let go (rightfully) along with your rather bizarre takes on other things only emboldens that.

I love that your justification for why it is bad Simon was let go is that he wasnt let go previously. So it only makes sense to fire someone if you do it right away? By that logic Ben Johnson should still be coaching the basketball team. By your logic no one shoukd ever be fired ever.

Every year lately the majority of our WRs struggle to make an impact. It is a constant complaint. Yet the guy who coaches that position should always keep his job cause...reasons?

He is, 100%. I clocked that a long time ago as well. He just cannot keep his weird, frequent posting style and terrible takes off this board. This is at least his 4th user name, probably several more.

I think Simon gets a little too much credit for 2019. It was KC's script, he left for Penn State a couple days before the game. I'll give him credit for in game adjustments but KC did the bulk of the work on that one. It's not like his play calling performances in the Rate and Pinstripe bowls in 2021 and 2022 were anything to write home about either. Simon had his ups and downs, sometimes when it's been a rollercoaster for almost a decade, all parties need a change. I am sure Simon will make his way back to the power 4 at some point

The WR room just became too inconsistent over the last 6 seasons. Guys would transfer in and out. Throwing out seasons, as many do when pointing out views on this board, 2019 is the season to throw out. That was a generational season with a Kill recruit and a Fleck recruit that performed and got to the NFL. No other WR has been drafted. It was time for change.

Bringing in Fruechte is huge for Fleck on so many levels. Fromer player, MN native, OC experience, Nationally recognized as 35 under 35, ties to last coaching staff of program. etc. etc. I think that is huge in helping grow the alumni support and base amongst former players.

Braun at Northwestern is bringing in a total new offensive staff and now his defensive coaches are leaving for other jobs. I think his seat might be hottest in B1G heading into next season with the investment the University has made in football. Fleck's seat only gets hotter from here as well and he knows it.

The transfers don't necessarily bother me as it's a numbers game there's only so many snaps and more are going to sit then play, as with any position group. But the guys who win snaps have to produce and like you said it's just been too inconsistent with some non 2019 bright spots. Daniel Jackson, Elijah Spencer in year two, Smith and Tracy this year. Simon will be fine he put some guys in the league at Western Michigan as well, he will work his way back up to P4 sooner rather than later, I think things were stale in that room and it was time for a change on all sides. Fruechte a local up and comer kind like Simon was in 2017.
