Mason comment on KFAN yesterday (11/9)

If he could beat Alabama with his players he could have crushed them with LSu's.

I liked Mason as a coach and thought he did a good job, but like Replacement Gopher, I never felt that he was "all in" here. I always remember the "I'm going to pick up the phone if it rings" response to a question about leaving (for which Barreiro and everyone else in town crucified the guy). There's nothing wrong with trying to improve one's position in life, but Mason's response could have been phrased a bit more diplomatically. Mason knows his football, but for whatever reason, he didn't seem interested in currying a relationship with the fan base, which you really have to do as a college coach. And I could be wrong. Maybe he was interested in that, but he didn't do a very good job at it.

Where Mason lost me was in his negotiating posture that led to his contract extension. He and Cornich played this waiting game like he was some superstar coach and that just rubbed me the wrong way. After that, I could more or less take him or leave him.

The thing to remember about Mason is that when he was at Kansas, he accepted the Georgia head coaching job only to change his mind about a day after the hiring was announced. A year later he was in Minnesota. My guess is family matters entered into all of those decisions and I can't blame him for that, but he just always seemed to have ants in his pants when it came to the "stay or go" thing.

It would have been interesting to see what Mason could have done with a bigger football budget. He had a number of good assistants who moved on to better opportunities because Mason didn't have the budget to keep them. That likely wouldn't have been an issue at LSU or Georgia (not sure about Michigan State).

He loses to Iowa, no bowl game. No bowl game, he comes back the next year.

Then he coaches at least two more years. Why? Because the stadium was opening.

So, realistically, he loses to Iowa, he coaches three more years. Crazy!!

I estimate Mike Scherels' interception cost Mason about 4 million dollars.

I guess that I don't blame Mase for the answer that he gave but it strikes me as pretty arrogant. He is essentially saying that he can't think of any mistakes that he made while he was a coach except that he stayed around long enough for some other idiot to fire him. Eh.

That's it, really?

I don't know if it's a no-brainer that Mase comes back if we don't make a bowl game. However, saying that Mase lost his job because of beating Iowa is a HUGE stretch.

The Texas Tech game gave the impression that Mase wasn't a great in-game coach. The Texas Tech game reminded everyone of the Michigan game (blowing the 4th quarter lead), the Wisconsin game (block punt), etc. It turned the tide for Mase because it felt like more of the same.

It wasn't that lost to Texas Tech, it was the manner in which we lost. To blame his firing on the loss to Iowa, well, you might as well blame Cupito for throwing the ball well in the first half of the Texas Tech game.

Interesting comments but I have moved on. I am behind coach Kill and want to see him succeed.

+1

I told some buddies after the Texas Tech game that someone needs to get fired. I never thought it was going to be Mason.
