Mason 2.0

If the only comparison is a desire to run the ball, Kill could be compared to many coaches. But to compare Kill to Mason is faulty on several levels. Mason saw the program as all about him, Kill sees the program as being all about Minnesota. Mason turned off the Minnesota High School Coaches, Kill embraced them as being one of them. Mason saw top talent leave the state, Kill has stemmed that. You can bet your letter of intent if Mason was Coaching, Jonah Persig would be in Columbus. Strength and Conditioning was a buzz word for Coach Mason, Coach Kill has brought it front and center as necessity for success. Coach Mason was consistently out coached, made few adjustments, had few tactics or tweaks to get a key first down or stop an opponent. Coach Kill has show the ability to do all that Mason was unable to. There is no legitimate comparsion between these two Coaches.

I totally agree with Husker on his points but its to early to support the bold part. Mason had his teams well prepared for many contests but was not able to muster up or change things well before or during crunch time to get some key W's. We will learn more about Coach Kills ability in these areas.

I agree that Kill yet to show us that he has the ability to frown, look puzzled at the same while looking at the clock. Nobody can do that as well as Mason did. I don’t hate Mason and thought he did some things well but to compare them to each other is ludicrous. It boggles my mind that people that people don’t understand how significant their differences are.

Jerry is the complete coach. EVERYTHING he does is done for one reason, i.e. to make the team better. Even better though is that he knows what needs to be done, how to do it, and then he finds a way to get it done. Mason on the other hand often allowed let his ego and dislikes to turn himself into a victim.

Is Jerry perfect? Of course not, but his drive is so strong that he will often get there through just plan work and persuade others to do the same.

And you know all this about Kill, how?

Let me preface this by saying that I had grown tired of some of Mase's tactics and was ok with his firing and that I am ecstatic to have Jerry Kill as a coach. I hope that I am right and that Coach Kill is going to be successful here.

However, we can't jump to so many conclusions about Kill right now. While Mase's coaching in that Michigan game was dreadful, Coack Kill hasn't been there yet. Mason does not get enough credit for having us in the position to play those games. I am not a big fan of Mase, but you can't compare a guy who has coached 1 3-9 season to guy who had Mase's level of success (however you want to rank his success).

+ 1

On a lesser stage, he won the last two games against Illinois and Iowa. Retaining Floyd of Rosedale is huge with me. His use of the late game, not end of the game on side kick with Wettenstine took planning, executiion, and seeds. That play from the kickng game at a critical moment was instructive to the team about finding a way to win. That's what the team needed and they got the win. A team that has had a hard time winning games over the past 4 years.

We tend to like to put things in convenient little boxes, but having run-oriented offense does not make a coach Mason.

It is not that difficult to understand what coach Kill is all about if you look at his actions here and before he came to Minnesota. Certainly none of us can predict with certainity if coach Kill will be successful here or not. Only time will tell but we do have a great deal of history and knowledge about whom Jerry Kill is. The problem I have with the theme of this thread is the idea that Glen Mason and Jerry Kill are similar. Husker70 said it best with this quote:
