Maryland transfer QB Danny O'Brien a Stinkin' Badger; UPDATED 6/11: O'Brien leaves UW

It really has been a perfect storm.

- Our senior QB, Phillips, has the ACL in his left knee three times, so he might just hang it up, which is perfectly understandable and probably the smart thing to do.

-Our Junior QB, Budmayr, was healthy when Wilson got there last year, but he messed up his elbow during camp, was out all year, and suffered a set back about a month ago and will likely not play this year, if ever again.

- Our sophomore QB, Brennan is healthy and will contend for the starting job.

- We have a (RS) Freshman QB, he's a walk on and he's healthy. He will also be contending for the starting job.

- Our true freshman QB, Houston, is out through least the majority of fall camp as a result of shoulder surgery. I have not definitively heard what his injury is, but his surgery was announced this week, well after signing day.

We have no one else. Since signing day we've lost two QB's. Our only healthy, on scholarship, QB has thrown something like 20 balls in game in his career. We really need a QB. Not even a starter necessarily, I mean it'd be great if a transfer panned out, but we simply need depth right now. Our back up is a walk on and we have a WR running our scout team. If one of our QB's gets hurt in season it would be a disaster.

Okay I get it. Not sure how it will pan out, but it all makes sense.

All those injuries really are bad luck. Honestly, I do not care how it works because O'Brien will not be as good as Wilson. Wilson was a flat out stud, and I am actually jealous that Bucky got him because he was very fun to watch. I doubt this transfer thing is truly what Bulemia wants to do, but it will NEVER work out that good again.

P.S. Wisconsin still sucks. I may have said some cordial things above, but I want everyone to know that they do still suck.

Righhhhtt. And what QB's have Coach Kill recruited and developed over time? Surely you don't mean Marquis Gray? And definitely not Chandler Harnish, because he wasn't even Kill's recruit. Not to mention, Harnish had some not so nice things to say about Coach Kill for abandoning his team before the bowl game. Was there some QB he developed at Southern Illinois that had great success? I don't know, I don't follow them.

Has absolutely nothing to do with the discussion here. It's not surprising some players would be mad about a coach leaving right before a bowl game. But it wasn't a surprise at all for Kill to leave when he did. He did what essentially every other coach does when he takes another job.

This has been beaten to death on other threads, but I just hate this rule. Don't care if it's O'Brien going somewhere else or Crist going to Kansas. I just don't like the rule.

Doing it two years in a row indicates that both recruiting and development were lacking. If they are successfull who can complain. I would guess it will catch up to them eventually.

Or it has to do with the fact that three of our four scholarship QB's will not be available due to injury. We have WR running our scout team for Christ's sake.

We could care less. Please go back to your Wisconsin blog where they may give a rip.

Other posters in this thread seemed to welcome the information I provided in this thread.

You come across as nothing more than a butthurt child with an inferiority complex. I'm not going anywhere, so deal with it.

I don't think anyone really thought that a WI fan lurking on Gopherhole in early March would be able to not troll.

Is he still here? I ignore listed him weeks ago, so I can't tell what he posts. 8 out of 41 posts (including this one). Must have freaked when the "Hey Danny--Come to Buckyville!" campaign was started:

Better?

As much as I hate WI trolls, i'd much rather listen to those guys yap on our board than ever see that picture again.

I don't think many would expect O'Brien to duplicate what Wilson did. I we were lucky enough for him to pick UW, I'd be happy if he could simply execute the offense.

As a recruit, most thought Tolzien would never play, and the kid ended up being a great player for us. O'Brien has a lot more pure talent. I think he could be a big contributor.

Thank goodness all the schools he is looking at have graduate programs that are not offered at Maryland, so he can pursue his academic dreams. What a *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#ing charade. Not because he's considering the red weasels, I just think the whole free-agent facade is nauseating.

We have one healthy scholarship QB. We'd be absolutely insane and borderline retarded not to pursue him.

You also have one absolutely insane and borderline retarded head coach so why aren't you pursing another head coach?

It is fairly simple. You can't play at the college level if you are a senior in HS and you can't play college sports if you have completed your undergrad. Yes, this includes people who get injured. tough hop.

Did you not read the thread? 3 of 4 scholarship QBs are INJURED. What does that have to do with recruitment and development?

Those three QB's include two **** QBs and the third one having had numerous Big Ten offers. They got injured. That's part of the game....unlucky on Wisconsin's part....that's why they are interested in a two year transfer QB.

You guys hate the rival coach. I get it. That's what happens when someone not only owns your program, but wins Two Big Ten championships on the way to it. Insane and retarded guys usually don't win two Big Ten championships. Otherwise, Timmy Brewster would be a star and we'd be the haters in Wisconsin.

Shouldn't you be getting all gussied up for your date with Chadima?

This would punish those who take their academics seriously, i.e. Christian Ponder, who was able to get his master's paid for while on football scholarship. I too agree that the free agency is a joke, but this isn't the solution.

Ponder also did it without a Red Shirt year.

This is stupid. In the state of Minnesota you can participate in HS sports despite being enrolled at a college and taking 0 HS classes through PSEO. Should they be unable to participate since they are technically in college? Also, is suddenly the NCAA adding in a rule about being unable to play sports with an undergrad degree? And how bout anyone on the Gophers with an undergrad degree, should they not be able to play? Or just other teams? What about players that graduate in 2 or 3 years, is their "reward" for being such good student-athletes to not be allowed to play their sport anymore? Garbage post.

Once again Badger fans troll opposing sites to defend themselves. Very hilarious.

After reportedly visiting Penn State and Ole Miss over the last 72 hours, former Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien confirms that he will be in Madison this weekend to see the Wisconsin program.

Danny O'Brien Profile

MADISON - They are eight words that Wisconsin fans are anxious to hear and put some clarity to the level of interest former Maryland quarterback Danny O’Brien has with the University of Wisconsin.

“Yes, I will be visiting this coming weekend,” said O’Brien in a message to Badger Nation.

The 6-3, 215-pound quarterback – formally a three-star QB ranked No.58 in the 2009 recruiting class by Scout.com – probably wouldn’t be the kind of quick fix former N.C. State quarterback Russell Wilson was for the Badgers last season, but he’ll certainly be in the mix considering the quarterback position is the biggest question mark heading into the start of spring practices on Saturday.

With the graduation of Wilson and injuries to current UW quarterbacks Jon Budmayr (arm), Bart Houston (shoulder) and Curt Phillips (knee), the Badgers will go through spring ball with only two healthy quarterbacks - redshirt sophomore Joe Brennan and redshirt freshman Joel Stave – who don’t have any collegiate starting experience.

Inexperience is not one word to describe O’Brien. Named the ACC rookie of the year and a freshman All-American after passing for 2,438 yards, with 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions, O’Brien went 7-3 as a starter in 2010 and had an efficiency rating of 134.5 in the Terps’ pro-style offense.

O'Brien took a step back last season as he struggled under the spread offense instituted by new head coach Randy Edsall and offensive coordinator Gary Crowton, who was fired after the Terps finished 2-10. O'Brien completed just 56.4 percent of his passes for 1,648 yards seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His season ended when he suffered a broken bone in his non-throwing arm on Nov. 12 in a loss to Notre Dame.

He proclaimed himself 100 percent recover and his career numbers are 342 of 603 (56.7 percent) for 4,086 yards and 29 touchdowns with 18 interceptions certainly provide an attractive option.

After he graduates from Maryland, O’Brien will have two years of eligibility remaining and can transfer to any school after being granted his full release.

FightOnState.com reported O’Brien visited Penn State last weekend and Bruce Felman of CBSSports.com is visiting Ole Miss Monday afternoon. It’s not publically known if O’Brien is taking more visits before or after Wisconsin.

Oh he has 2 years of eligibility remaining? This could be a nice FA signing.

There is only one clear solution to this free agency. Hardline - you graduate you no longer play.
