Marshall has notified officials that it is opting out of the Independence Bowl vs. Army, sources tell @YahooSports.

Are the Badgers next man up? Thereby continuing their streak of bowl games.

Really too bad for Marshall. It's been a pretty solid program since moving up from FCS, especially in the late 90s/early 2000s and 2010s. Such a large exodus has to be disheartening.

Marshall, Marshall...Marshall.

Given their QBs are all transferring I don’t think it matters much in this day and age
I kind of wanted to see wisconsin play a bowl game and then throw fewer passes than Army because no QBs

There's always the risk they might rediscover the run game through that, though.

Marshall just didn't have enough oars in the water...

Louisiana Tech will be replacing Marshall.

What a joke.
Understand the joke comment however this technically could happen to anyone. Highly unlikely but the stars line up wrong and maybe as an HC you can't responsibly field a team.

Understand not the same but a parallel situation would be like the Gophers in the covid season not being able to field the entire kicking unit for the opener with Michigan. That part of the game was brutal. Apply this to the D and O too and yikes.

Unfortunate circumstance. Another casualty of the Portal.

Look at how the bungled their shit with Huff. Only themselves to blame

Was it 3 years ago that Army got hosed and didn't get a bowl because of all the tie-ins? Didn't need to happen again. Lost to Navy, but that's still a special team. Thank-you to LA Tech for Next Man Up and keeping the Skunks out of there.

I expect this to happen more frequently in the future, especially for teams going through a HC change.

my thoughts exactly. it just takes all the pieces to line up in a certain way:
*team is good enough to qualify for a bowl game
*coach announces he is leaving before the bowl game
*mass exodus of players into the portal
*team is left without a viable roster to play in the bowl game

and this is probably much more likely for a G5 level team, where the coach would be hired for a (presumably) "better" job. also, the coach needs to be popular with the players.

so I would be surprised if something like this doesn't happen virtually every year.
