Junior Gates got the hat trick (two on nice shots and the third on a lucky/hard work effort) as Minnesota defeated Mercyhurst 5-1. Tomorrow the Gophers will play UMass victors over Huntsville in OT.

Luke Nottermann made his first appearance as a Gopher racking up an assist. Connor Reilly and Taylor Cammarata did not play and of course Ryan Lindgren is with team USA.

Yes! What an unexpectedly physical game with UMass. There were plenty of hard hits, two game misconduct penalties, a ton of face offs and the UMass goalie tripping a Gopher player as he skated behind the net for no good reason other than to be a dick. Plus, there were at least three calls that had Lucia standing on the bench screaming at the referees-that's unusual in itself.
