Marcus - Welch a Gopher

Something has to go right for this program at some point. I am going to pretend that all of Tubby's recruiting gaffs never happened at expect Welch to be ready to lead this team. I'm trying to be more positive...

Just a quick note - Penn State didn't use a true point guard this year - splitting Battle and Frazier, mainly, at that position. Even without any dominating players other than Battle, Penn State had a very nice, unexpected season. The key was that, when they needed it, they could rely on Battle to hit big shots, and Battle and Frazier could control the basketball without turning it over.

Also, you rarely saw Penn State's "big men" out at the top of the key. Sampson, Iverson, and Mbakwe never belong there either. The offense needs to change style. There was little excuse to get Blake so few open shots each game - it means that the offensive game plan was not appropriate for the personnel on the team.

I really like the idea of a Welch and Andre Hollins backcourt. Both are capable ball handlers, both can score, and both have experience at point guard.

In HS and JUCO but not the Big Ten. Be prepared to watch our team next year struggle without one experienced BT ball handler who can score as these guys get thrown into the fire. Its disappointing that Tubby has no one ready to fill that spot with Nolen graduating so the newbies can develop.

You mean guys like Devoe Joseph, or perhaps Justin Cobbs? What in the world was he supposed to do, recruit 3 PGs a year?

Not that it matters...but Welch was a 4 year honor student in high school. Not surprising as we went to UC Davis which is a great school.

It matters to me and Tubby, he has been bringing smart, athletic players that are good kids. Andre had offers to Standford and Harvard if I recall correctly.

Pure PG - Combo Guard

To me combo guard just means he can *also* shoot, maybe slash and get to the rim. It does not mean they can't;

- Be a floor general, set the offense, get players in the correct spots
- Distribute and find the hot-hand or mismatch
- Understand when to push the tempo vs. slow up and set a play.

FRANKLIN HS '08: Led team and finished 15th in the state with 25.1 points per game as a senior... Scored 30 or more points seven times and reached the 20-point plateau a total of 18 times... Led the Delta Valley Conference and the section in scoring and shot a blistering .451 from beyond the arc.... Named first-team All-Metro by the Sacramento Bee as a senior after garnering second-team honors as a junior... Senior year efforts also included being selected as most valuable player of the DVC... Was MVP of the Bella Vista Tournament and grabbed all-tournament recognition at the Arcata and Fairfield tournaments... Impressed at 2008 Sac vs. Bay Showdown all-star game, scoring 27 of his 29 points in the second half to help his squad overcome a 23-point second half deficit and win 115-114... Four-year honor student... Led DVC in scoring as a junior with 18.2 ppg... Finished high school career with 1,230 points.

What about FT's. Can he hit the extra point in crunch time?
