Welch said he will be Tubby's point guard to begin next season. He's excited.

Julian Welch told me he committed to Gophers today.

Question is how much more money do you give a 60 yr-old coach who may or may not be able to take the Gophers program to the next level?

Even with big collapse at MN, I've heard Tech's search firm has Tubby at top of the list. But Gophers have a chance to keep coach around.

Georgia Tech paying $7 million to fire Hewitt must mean it has somebody solid in mind to fill position. You can bet they'll consider Tubby.

I will believe that when I see or hear an Official Release from the U.

Tubby has emphatically said he is not leaving.

We got our starting pg and stud Andre can play the 1-2. Great news.

It has been a huge disappointment this year with expectations as high as they were. Tubby brought that on to himself by doing such a great job for the U in taking our program to the next level. Then stuff happened. 2 season ending injuries and a defection. I do not know of too many teams that could have dealt with that. We still were competitive in most of our games after Al went down but we just did not have the depth to finish.

We will have 7 new players next year. Andre, Joe, now Welch, and one more very likely to come; plus Otto, Elliot, and Chris. We will lose at least one big (I am hoping that Iverson transfers and takes a year off to develop his skills). I am hoping that Trevor and Rodney stay but I will be pleasantly surprised to see Trevor still here. Mo will be a great contributor and there is no way that Ralph is going anywhere and I look for him to have a great senior year. It will take time for the new guys to blend with the returning players, but I look for our team to get better as the season progresses.

Great news and welcome Mr. Welch. I look forward to next year.

I will believe Chris Monter before anyone else, so I now say......Hot Damn!!!!! Welcome to GopherLand JuWel!!!

If true, party! He will be outstanding for us.

Welcome, Julian!

Marcus' story with quotes from Welch:

"One of my main things was going somewhere with a good coach and being able to come in right away and contribute to the team," Welch told the Pioneer Press on Saturday. "When I was out there I was talking to (Gophers coach Tubby Smith) and it seems like I'm going to start off at point guard, and maybe later switch to off guard."

Go Gophers!!

finally will have a backcourt that is versatile, athletic, can shoot and get to the rack.. also no defensive liabilities... his could be a good team

6'3" and 200# is geat size for our PG. Reminds one of Darryl Mitchell and Melvin Newborn body-types...let's just hope he can play like them. :)

The only new recruit I have seen play is Coleman and I am very excited to have him become a gopher. With Andre ranked even higher, can't wait to see him play. Exciting to have Welch, but I don't know much about him. Read what I can about him on line....but what do most of you expect from him? Hope he starts right away and can make a big difference.

IMHO...if Welch isn't starting at PG the minute he walks on campus then we never should've offered the JUCO recruit to begin with. Like you, Xman...never seen the young man play so I'm in the dark like most but hoping for good things. Hell...let's just throw Welch, Coleman, Andre, Walker and Trevor (hopefully) out on the court and lets see what the heck happens!

So I've been in a gopher basketball depression over the last month. But two days after our last loss of the season I'm beginning to look forward to next year and this news brings me some hope. I'm so easy. All the frustration during this season and all it took for me to get back on track was a JC recruit that nobody really knows anything about. Am I setting myself up for another crash next year? I guess we'll see.

as is the mindset and plight of a gopher fan. im with ya

Thank God

We were really due for some good news after the last two months of utter disaster. Gotta be starting PG next year.

Another gopher fan is with you.

I don't want to rain on anyones parade who is happy about this, but just provide some information. Welch is not a pure point guard, he's a combo guard, and was not a full time point guard at UC Davis or at his junior college.

As long as he can competently handle the ball, operate the offense effectively, and play strong defense I don't care what kind of guard he is.

Admittedly I haven't seen Welch or read much of him outside of this site, but I will say I definitely shuddered at the term "combo guard." I thought we were trying to get a pure point.

True point guard has turned into a nice way of saying someone can't score. That isn't what the team needs.

FRom the Star Tribune....

Julian Welch, a junior college combo guard, said Saturday he will play for the Gophers.

Welch averaged 19 points and five assists per game for Yuba College in Yuba City, Calif., during the 2010-11 season, when he spent most of his time at point guard. He said he's capable of playing both guard positions.

I don't want to rain on anyones parade who wants to downplay this signing, but we just improved a ton in the backcourt from where we have been the last 11 games.

Not that it matters...but Welch was a 4 year honor student in high school. Not surprising as we went to UC Davis which is a great school.

we need good kids, he is a good kid. we need gaurds, he is a guard, we need shooters. from what ive seen he is a pretty good shooter. if we threw him on the team today, he would probably be the 2nd best behind hoff. not say much though. :/

Nice to add some depth at the guard positions with Al and Blake leaving. It takes a little pressure off Andre Hollins to have to step in as a freshman PG starter as well.

Anybody Know?

Why did Julian Welch leave UC Davis?
