"Moses Alipate's brother, Marcus, could possibly join Gopher basketball team as a walk-on PG. He's also looking at Wofford and St. Thomas."

Very interesting, this family must really bleed maroon and gold, doesn't he have an offer from Wofford and another D1 school or two? Tough to pass that up to be a walk-on her, but would be great if he did!

ESPN profile

"March, 2010: Alipate comes from an athletic family. His older brother, Moses, is a redshirt freshman quarterback at Minnesota and he is the son of former Minnesota Viking Tuineau. He is a good outside shooter with excellent court vision. His brother is 6-foot-6 and if Marcus can grow a few inches, it could cause his stock to rise. Alipate works hard on the defensive end, but needs to add more strength to matchup against more physical point guards. He needs to continue to improve his left hand and ability to get past defenders. Alipate has a big heart and a high basketball I.Q.

if his name wasn't alipate he would not even be considered, hopefully he proves me wrong if he joins the M & G.

Gotta love MN kids that love the Gophers like that. Lord knows you can NEVER have too many PG's and when reading the ESPN description, they say he is:

a solid "true" point guard prospect and is the glue to his team. He showed good quickness, solid ball handling skills, and good decision making in transition, the half court set and when he dribble penetrates

I would love to see him come here and give us even more depth and maybe even a great player one day.

Would be great to see him added to the roster as a walk-on.

I'd love if he walks on. If he turns out to contribute at all great, if not then no big deal. He's not taking up a scholarship. Always nice to have more Minnesota kids and having another point guard would be great. Hopefully he walks on.

Yeah, I love this news. It's an athletic family, and a true point guard who's committed to the program, and has some skills is what we need. We've had good success with turning walk-ons into contributors over the years.

I was very impressed with Marcus when I saw him play last summer. I did not see him play during his high school season. At one point, I read that Michigan State was interested in Marcus, but that was awhile ago. I would agree with the poster above that said he has very good court vision and bb IQ. With the lack of pure point guards on the Gopher team it wouldn't surprise me if he was a contributor at MN at some point in the future if he decides to wear maroon and gold.

In my opinion he was one of the top 5-10 quickest (not fastest) football players in the state last year. Haven't seen him play basketball recently, but I would imagine he is quick off the dribble.

Just guessing here, but is it similar to al nolens game at all?

Not really. Alipate is a good shooter, but is relatively small / slight. He can't penetrate and create / finish through traffic like Nolen.

Alipate is basically an undersized 2-guard that plays the point.

Great kid. Don't see a huge amount of minutes for him at Minnesota, but I hope he proves me wrong.

Well, from a Gopher fan point of view, it would be great if Marcus walked on. From a fathers point of view, go to Wofford young man, go to Wofford.

Alipate is comparable to Ahamnisi. A few inches shorter and not quite as strong. Don't know why he would turne down a D1 offer to walk on? Won't receive any minutes ever for the Gophers. Never believed those Michigan St., WI, UCLA, etc rumors. He's a D2 player at best. If he has a Wofford offer he should take it before it's too late.

This would be.......

our best walk on signing since Zach Puchtel. There is no reason why he can't contribute at the Big Ten level. This kid is highly skilled, and I don't why he doesn't have a better offer list.

His brother is 5 or 6 inches taller than him, maybe he'll still grow a couple of inches. I'm kind hoping Coleman does too since he's about 5 or 6 inches shorter than his brother.

I played AAU with him last summer, and he definetly can handle the ball and can find the open player. People dont give him enough credit for his shooting ability. I dont think you can compare him and Maverick

Good for Marcus that would be nice to see him be a gopher, but I think wofford would be a more beneficial option for his individual career.
