Latvian Oto Osenieks commits to Gophers

Updated: 04/18/2010 08:10:14 PM CDT

The University of Minnesota men's basketball team has gone international again, this time with Latvian forward Oto Osenieks, who gave an oral commitment to the Gophers on Sunday.

Canadian center Maurice Walker signed on the first day of the late signing period last Wednesday. Osenieks, who was offered a scholarship by coach Tubby Smith during an official visit over the weekend, told the Pioneer Press he would sign his letter of intent with Minnesota at noon Monday.

"I liked it a lot," Osenieks said in an e-mail of his visit to Minnesota's campus. "I am signing tomorrow."

The 6-foot-9, 215-pound Osenieks moved to the U.S. last year and played his senior season at Brehm Prep in Carbondale, Ill. He is Smith's fourth recruit in the 2010 class, joining Walker, Nebraska center Elliott Eliason and Tennessee guard Austin Hollins.

Brehm Prep coach Aaron Lee told local Rivals.com and Scout.com that Osenieks was an excellent outside shooter and ball handler with the ability to play on the wing or in the post in the Big Ten Conference. He also considered Iowa State, Providence and Florida.

The Gophers still are looking for a point guard. Their top target, Cory Joseph of Findlay Prep in Las Vegas, brother of Minnesota sophomore and Canada native Devoe Joseph, is expected to announce his college decision this week.

Go Gophers!!

Myron: Nothing is official yet.

(kidding)

Tubby is really adding some size. Hopefully this guy can actually play the wing, we have enough big men.

Myron agrees, he just tweeted:

Just talked to Oto Osenieks from Brehm Prep. Says he'll sign LOI Monday at noon. "It definitely was the right pick for me." #stribgophers 2 minutes ago via web

Old news, Oto tweeted that himself hours ago...

Didn't CJ just say 1-2 weeks? Is this more speculation from Marcus?

Yep - I got that, James Louis also Facebooked that he would be a Gopher...and we know how that turned out ;)

Just adding one more piece of information.

Can anyone confirm the Flordia offer? Oto is listed as having offers from Florida, Providence, and Iowa State on Rivals. I am pretty sure he never visited Florida, even though there is a visit date of April 2nd listed.

I don't know what to think about this signing as my own opinion from the clips I've seen was that Oto is a boom or bust recruit. He's either going to cause matchup problems as a 6'9 perimeter player who can knock down the 3 or he's going to be a tweener that is too slow to defend wings and too slight to defend posts. He certainly is an intriguing recruit and I am interested to see him on the floor next year.

We won't know until we see him, I don't know why everyone is so quick to already diagnose his boom/bust status.

Boom or bust really is not a negative term. It just means the guy has a high upside and and a significant downside. I've only seen clips of him, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I just see him as a guy who's either going to flourish offensively due to his body type/style of play or struggle (especially defensively) for the same reason.

I think describing a recruit hours after it's confirmed he's committed, and without knowing diddly-squat about him, as being a boom/bust player..... I think that strikes me as a bit negative.

Correct. Too soon. You really never know what you're getting with any given recruit. Could be the next Robbie Hummel as some other threads are claiming, could be a total miss and fizzle out and not retain his scholarship. You never know until he steps on the court. Let's be honest, we aren't basketball experts, none of us really know with any certainty whether he'll be boom or bust.

Roster (As Of Now)

F Williams, Osenieks
F Mbakwe, Dawson
C Sampson, Walker
C Iverson, Eliason
G Hoffarber, Joseph, Hollins
G Nolen, Cobbs, Allen

Still fluid but taking shape.

Thanks for that - it tells me that he's probably mobile enough to play the 3... hopefully he's got decent lateral quickness, but he seems like he'd be alright there, especially with the size we're going to have inside with RS3, Iverson, Walker, Elliason and hopefully Mbakwe. Gotta love a 6'9" SF who can shoot, and we'd have a huge lineup with him at the 3.

This is unintentionally hilarious, what you just described (could be Hummel, could fizzle out) is the exact definition of a boom or bust. My entire point was I don't know what the Gophers are getting here. There are not many 6'9 guys who shoot the trey like Oto does in college basketball, he's a unique prospect.

I don't believe Florida ever went further than 'showing a little interest' (i.e., no visit, no offer). As for your second paragraph, I agree with your commentary.

Ha, I also laughed when I saw that...

I don't think it is negative nor too early to call Oto a boom or bust recruit. Hell, I think its a bit of a positive at this point, considering his upside seems to be pretty high. At this late in the recruiting game, there aren't very many sure things out there (your CJ's aside), so you have to roll the dice with some players. Given the current situation, I'll happily roll the dice on a 6-9 guy who can hit the 3!

So how does this kid compare to Kevin Noreen? He is 6'10 and can shoot, but also a good post player. So what does this oto kid have that elevates him above Noreen?

That lineup looks awesome. I'll take our chances with six guys on the floor any day ;-)

Here's my tag on our new kid.........

........ Oto "the singing sensation" Osenieks or Oto "the Latvian Idol" Osnenieks

Just looked on Rivals and there is nothing official yet on a signed LOI for Oto. Wasnt that supposed to happen today around noon?

Marcus tweet:

"Brehm coach Aaron Lee said Osenieks signed as planned with MN today. He said Oto needs to add weight, but is athletic enough to play in B10."

Go Gophers!!
