Marcus Fuller blog: Can Tubby land two visiting recruits this weekend?

Tubby Smith is sitting with Tharpe and Oglesby on his left plus one of the Pump brothers walked with Tubby to the Gopher seats.

Tyus Jones is on aN unofficial visit with Tharpe and Oglesby.

As for the scholarship comments, Maverick has a one year scholarship probably worth over $20,000 when you include tuition, housing, meal plans, books and whatever else get's paid for. Players transfer out of programs and coaches have the right to show players the door. Let's see how he plays this season before talking about Tubby giving him the boot.

I understand your comment, given that player movement (for one reason or another) has unfortunately become very common in college hoops. Regarding the bolded section, if Tubby does start running kids, what does Tubby say when a parent asks him if he will take care of his/her son when they leave home for college? What does he say when that parent asks what kind of commitment Tubby will make to the kid? If the answer is "I can't promise anything after the first year", I would guess the parent would not be overly impressed. All that said, I don't think Tubby has this sort of reputation.

On a related note, remember Paul Jesperson's comments when he committed to Virginia? Tony Bennett's commitment to the kid and Jesperson's belief in what he was told were among the primary reasons Paul chose Virginia.

The only 1-yr scholarship commitment Tubby made was to give walk-on Cory Sears a scholarship freshman year (2000-01) but not for longer than that.

Was reading some tweets from tharpe. Sounds like he really enjoyed his visit. He would be a great get for the gophers. Hope It all works out!

Nice to know Tyus Jones is on an unofficial visit, we're going to need that kid in a couple of years.

No offense, but I don't expect Maverick to stick with the Gophers past this season, and I don't think it would take any unusual act from Tubby for that transfer to happen. The combination of not playing significant minutes and being far from home has a way of convincing players they need to transfer. The Big Ten wouldn't let their schools oversign if "unplanned" roster turnover was unusual.

I sent him a tweet saying he could start for us next year and he re-tweeted it.

I talked to Naadir today and it sounds like he might be a late signee. Oglesby is visiting Arizona State and Illinois the next two weekends, os I'll give him a call later this week. Iowa might be the one to beat.

I don't like recruiting late signees. They seem to be looking for something better.

I expect the Gophers to have 2 commitments this fall - out of top 4 targets (Coleman, Tharpe, Oglesby, and Andre Hollins).

i'd take coleman and hollins (most likely two IMO) and call it a day. If tharpe says yes soon, great, but i think he is looking to wait. Oglesby is probably headed to Iowa regardless of any visits to other schools...

Coleman and Hollins would be two solid additions anyway.

It is sounding more and more like Oglseby is going to Iowa.
You guys can't like Tharpe possibly holding out for the spring signing period.

I really think Coleman prefers Iowa State, but I'm not sure there is a spot for him right now, which is extremely unfortunate for us at ISU.

Where is your proof that he prefers ISU? lol. delusional, thats like me saying Paige prefers the gophers.

Settle down. It was an opinion.

I really believe Coleman is the best available talent for 2011 that Iowa State has a legitimate shot at (and if you think he's Minny's w/out question, well...).

It's unfortunate because like you guys, we need a true PG for that class and have our eyes on a JUCO (of course, we are still recruiting Tharpe, but I would be delusional if I thought we were in the driver's seat for his services).

Oh, BTW, Coleman's official to Ames has been cancelled. I'm not saying Iowa State moved on, but I will say two PG's are now being actively pursued.

Might be awhile before I'm back on this site. Just wanted to say, it's been fun and keep it real. I root hard for Minny twice a year. Beat the piss out of the Squawks, huh?

Interesting. Good Luck

+1

Works for me. Per Chris Monter, Andre will complete his last visit Oct.8 (IMO hopefully this means an early signee).

Would love to have Naadir (but can not wait and risk not having a PG).

I find it unlikely that both Hollins and Coleman are Gophers, unless another scholarship opens up for a PG.

It seems that another scholarship always seems to open. I can't recall the last time we haven't had any attrition after a season. I just doesn't happen. I've stopped worrying about where scholarships will come from. If Hollins and Coleman both want to be Gophers...I'd take them.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more of a reaction to this... assuming it's true and he isn't rescheduling... does this not pretty much lock him up? Can't imagine he's going to Santa Clara...

Agreed. Coleman and Tharpe would be nice.
