“We’re just going to have to play them, because there were plenty of opportunities yesterday and we didn’t,” Smith said. “That’s my fault. We have to figure out a way to do it. It’s not a matter of trust. It’s a matter of when things are pretty tight and in hand or somebody is maybe playing well or the matchup. It’s all about a feel of what we’re trying to do at the time.”

Go Gophers!!

So yesterday Gophers convert on two critical out of bounds plays.

Today we find out that Tubby flat out took responsibility and said something was his fault.

I this could be a major turning point for the program-- finally the head coach is taking responsibility for something. Nowwego!!!!

Oookay.

“Looking back on it, I think fatigue was a big part of our problem, because we extended our defense a lot and I think it took a lot out of our starters,” Smith said in regards to Sunday’s game. “I just have to play them. There were plenty of opportunities, probably, to play them yesterday, and we didn’t and that’s my fault. So, we’ve got to figure out a way to do that.”

Go Gophers!!

I’ve said before that Welch is the Gophers’ best option off the bench, and that they needed to give him more playing time. But Smith didn’t think the senior deserved it Sunday.
“He’s just having a tough time defending and taking care of the basketball,” he said. “It’s hard to play when you’re turnover the ball over like that — for anybody. It was bad enough we had starters turning it over. But we can’t afford to have you play six minutes and turn the ball over two times. You just can’t play at that point in time. I can’t put you in the game.”

Welch can't defend anyone.

Yes, and that ugly turnover in the first half when White steps into the passing lane and went down for a dunk. That was a momentum changer for Iowa.

I like the comment in the Strib from Wally's mom

Go Gophers!!

Yipes! He's going to play the subs more...........

I was happy with the way he limited their time to spot substitutions rather than the hockey line. So he gets credit there.

I'm glad that Tubby took some responsibility.

The problem is that there are no answers on the bench. The match ups are scary against anyone other than Nebraska and Penn State.

There is room for Elliott off the bench. He is getting better and will contribute in some circumstances. Julian is a bad match up in a lot of instances because he is slow afoot and has trouble guarding people. The others should get spot duty where they can succeed. Pretty rare that the line change will help any of them succeed at this time of year. The team needs to get Trevor a breather more often than they have been.

Wally doesn't get much playing time. Buggs is a redshirt. Other teams in this conference have freshman playing major minutes - why can't the Gophers? Tubby doesn't like to play freshman? How has that worked out for this team? We (as jamiche says) have no bench - that's a very large problem, and not having freshman that can play adds to the problem.

I recall Andre and Coleman being freshman last year that got significant minutes.

By all means get the bench some sensible minutes. For God sakes do not play them all at the same time !!!!!

So why not recruit freshmen who can play early. Tubby has finally figured our he screwed up recruiting some of these clowns he calls a bench. He recruits two guys who at this point are fours and hopefully down the line one or both become good swingmen. Doesn't do much for you now. His recruiting decisions are coming home to roost. And possibly ruining, what with another decent guard could have been a sweet six-teen type of team.

ya if only blue chip recruits were lining up to come here. I think both are freshman will be fine, it would be pointless to play Buggs with three seniors ahead of him, I do think Ellenson could help this team, give us ten minutes a game

Yeah its tthat simple... recruit 5*....

Tubby needs to recruit a point guard this year. He apparently hasn't learned from the disaster that occurred after Nolen got hurt and Hoff tried to play PG. Mav and Welch are not B1G caliber PGs. Why he did not give Edina's Woodward an offer escapes me. The kid is quick, handles the ball very well and scored 41 the other night. He would not be a starter but could come in and spell Andre. A Gopher offer would have trumped a Penn St offer IMO. There have got to be players of his caliber still available.
