If you’re inclined to place most of the responsibility for Nebraska’s passing struggles on quarterback Tommy Armstrong, offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf offered up a reminder: Wide receiver drops don’t help, and neither do errant snaps. Both have contributed to a sluggish 35.6 percent completion rate in the last two games.

“Completion percentage is going to rise just by catching the ball,” Langsdorf said. “What is it — lies, damned lies and statistics? It’s hard to say it’s one guy or one thing. Sometimes he’s been pressured. Sometimes he’s been chased out of the pocket, sometimes he’s been a little off balance, maybe the route was short, maybe we didn’t catch the ball. You know, there’s a lot of things, in that passing game, to be a well-oiled machine. Everything’s got to be going the right direction and going on the same page...

Receivers ready for contact

Nebraska’s receivers began the position-specific portion of Tuesday’s practice doing their best impressions of over-aggressive defensive backs.

They paired up, one doing his best to prevent the other from catching the football by grabbing, shoving and bumping — receiver coach Keith Williams basically told all of the acting defenders to commit pass interference.

It wasn’t anything too out of the ordinary. Receiver Brandon Reilly said he and his teammates have regularly conducted drills to prepare them for press coverage on Saturdays.

They got a taste of that against Wisconsin. They expect to see more in-your-face looks from Minnesota as well.

“We work on it a lot more, so I’m confident with it,” Reilly said. “I’m always looking forward to one-on-one battles outside.”
