"Another name to remember is Mark Mangino. The former Kansas coach has been connected to the Gophers opening — we’ve been told he’s already spoken to the search firm conducting Minnesota’s search — and will no doubt get at least a look from Colorado’s search committee."

Found this while scouring for tidbits on the coaching search

I wonder if he's been contacted as a reference or as a candidate. Did he coach with Sumlin at OU?

No, Mangino left in 2001, Sumlin didn't get there until 2003.

Hopefully we only contacted Mangino to see what being laughed at by an orange is like.

If Leach's treatment is suspect, what about Mangino's?

He got fired for a similar reason. I'm guessing HE contacted the search firm, not the other way around.

He wants to get back into coaching in the worst way. He was good for Kansas, even though I would hate to see his fatness on the side lines he probably could do good things for the program.

But like I said, if Leach is a no because of a sketchy past, Mangino should be similar.

He's got some anger management problems that could come back to bite the U.

If we hire him, then the name of this forum MUST be changed to "Mangino's Mangiatori"

(Mangiatori means "eaters" in Italian)

Conference records:
0-8
3-5
2-6
3-5
3-5
7-1
4-4
1-7

He had ONE winning conference record (and a very good one) and one 4-4 year and the rest were below average. He also went down fast from the 7-1 team. If the last year was also 4-4 or 5-3 then you could say once he turned the corner he never looked back. Also, lets face it the health question has to come up when a guy is that big.

The odds are that no, he hasn't been contacted but like every out of work or wanting a pay increase coach in America he's got "scources" that will say he was.

Maybe he even made the phone call himself.

I'll be glad when this is over.

I guess it's possible that Mark Mangino could fill in for the late, great Jerry Blackwell as a tag team partner when future Gophers Head Coach Buck "Rock and Roll" Zumhoffe takes on S.D. "Special Delivery" Jones and Larry Zbyszko for the Tag Team championship belts.

I agree 100%. They already want Mangino back at Kansas. He could do a good job for us - he did well at Kansas.

I've been thinking about Leach and how the university could accomodate his past and current situation. Here's my thoughts:

1) Maturi will need to man-up and know that he's got a very strong personality coming in. He'll need to know Leach will make demands and will not be pushed around. He will need to be the type of manager that can handle an Alpha personality with tact and respect.
2) Make a statement at the press conference when introducing him that the university believes that someone is innocent until proven guilty. They also feel that based on researched facts that there is a possibility that Texas Tech wrongfully terminated Mr. Leach. That after today, there will be no more questions answered regarding the alleged incident.
3) Have an air-tight conduct clause in Leaches contract. Also require weekly anger management sessions.
4) Take out a large liability policy on Leach.
5) Get out and win some football games.

This may or may not be enough, but its a start.

3) Have an air-tight conduct clause in Leaches contract.

This is all you would need to do. Leach is a smart man and would understand this. The reason he didn't want to have this added to his contract at Tech is because the contract was finalized already and he knew they couldn't fire him for cause, they did, hense the lawsuit. Hire the guy already!

I'm pretty sure Tech's defense is that they fired Leach for insubordination because he refused to apologize for his comments related to Adam James/Craig James. They wanted him out, but he had a chance to save his job by kissing Myers' feet.

I dont think we need a conduct clause with Leach. That makes it seem like we expect him to put the program in bad situation(s), and if control/respect were the problems at Texas Tech than having him sign a conduct clause starts us off on a bad foot at Minnesota. The only thing we'd need is a large buyout to be included so he doesn't run off.

One could look at it as though if #3 is necessary than he is a liability not worth taking. Having to fire a guy after a year and a half because he he violated his conduct clause will only set us back further. At any rate, Leach isn't even getting an honest look so it is a moot point.

+1, Craig James and his son thought they were acting in an episode of Friday Night Lights. Beside having a foul mouth and being a kooky Leach is a coach any program would want.

Easy everyone. Even if the firm did contact him, that does not mean he is the top target. Gathering info requires talking with a number of people. The reality is they have talked with coaches who are currently employed and due to that, do not want their names mentioned in public. Mangino, not being employed, needs all the publicity he can get.

Yep.

Leach would give us an identity. Hes definetly a sharp contrast from JoePa, The Senator, DickRod, and the rest of the irrelevant Big 10 coaches.

And he wouldn't worry about those silly concussions either.

I could be wrong about this, but didn't Minnesota hire him on as a consultant in the last few weeks of the Brewster campaign?

Just the biggest.

Not directed at calminn, but the misguided suggestion that a Leach contract carry a behavior clause. Any contract that requires a guy to do anger management is exhibit A in the negligent hiring suit brought by the first disgruntled kid who leaves the program. Regardless of the merits that clause/exhibit would unnecessarily create nuisance value. Leach has talent and appeal because of it but it does not come without a significant costs above and beyond his required salary.

Why can't Mangino lose weight? And just be pudgy - something psychological going on there.

They just allowed him to be around the program. I don't believe he was paid anything.

What did the search firm contact him for, menu consultant

To see what items he liked best on the TCF bank stadium concession stands or buffet? Did he inhale all of the chicken wings in the press box and Sid filed a complaint? Are they are looking to bill him for the 1 day he was here for room, board and air?
If it was for head football coach, forget about it we will all be bailing with humpty largest briefs get's an interview or consideration.
