Mallory Heyer announces she's leaving Gophers program

I don’t have any hard feelings with OR but always prefer if our players who transfer out leave the Big. Hope she’s happy and she stays healthy.
 


This has to be about NIL money. Others on the the Gophers must have gotten the majority. Seriously, why else would she leave and head to a direct competitor. We all loved Malory and she seemed to bleed maroon and gold, but "wishing her the best" I can't quite arrive at yet given the move she made and ambiguity surrounding it.

Starting to think you're right about $$$, though suspect its more rev share money than NIL money.
 


So we will get to see her back in the Barn next year! I wonder if she even visited other schools? Finding a school within 10 days is some fast work.

Really hope this team this year makes a splash and the recruiting keeps going up! Go Gophs!
 

After about 25 years of employment at the same company, I learned that the bottom line was I was an employee number... when share owners were unhappy, layoffs started.... never happened to me, but to many friends. Loyalty was something that rolled easily off the tongue, but lacked depth. The reality is that it is a 'days pay for a days work'... we are even... tomorrow is a new day.

Whatever her reason(s), $$$, minutes, wants different scenery, or other grievances... doesn't matter. While here, Mallory did a days work (and did it well) and received the agreed upon compensation.

Regarding going to a Big Ten school... if you want to be champion... you must beat all comers regardless of the conference.

I personally wish her well and hope her string of consecutive starts continues. Thank you Mallory for you days work over and over!!

However, having said those nice words... I still hold a resentment against Brenda Oldfield.

Sorry, but the bonds between members of an athletic team and some random company are very different. She basically quit on her team and some of her closest friends at the beginning of a season. Don't wish her ill, but at the same time I'm not about to gush pretty thoughts about her. If she did it after the season that's one thing; but it's a pretty crappy move to do it now. And I do realize it's now a different world.
 




Regardless of whether money was factor in her decision to leave, Oregon is a good place to land for that. They don't call Nikes Phil Knight Uncle Phil out there for nothing.

At least Whalen won't be attempting to coach again. She setting up cones and handing out balls at the Lynx practices. Pretty much doing a job that anyone can do. Helps to have a friend like Cheryl Reeves that hands out jobs to her friends.

It's all about the money. Coaches give players an opportunity. If they succeed, they want to be paid and given big minutes. If they don't get what they demand.. they leave. Smart coaches will spread out the minutes evenly from the start so that no one players gets to take 20+ shots a game. You want a team of good players without any stars. Stars get egos and want to get paid. Mallory will get a nice down payment on a house going to Oregon.

2022 recruits were a bust. Nice set of players, but never had the ability to raise the program to the next level. I believe they would have been better if Coach P got them from the beginning and put pieces around them, especially Braun. They had to unlearn the bad habits from Whalen staff, and then have Coach P's staff teach them the basics of defending, and an offensive system (other than ball hogs hoisting all the shots).

I don't think we're really seeing an offensive system out of coach P either.

I agree with that so far. I think her offensive strategy is to create offense off of good defense. I think defense has improved dramatically. And when you play non-conference games against teams that are less athletic than you that offensive strategy works great. When you start playing teams that are atleast as athletic if not more athletic than you are that strategy does not work that well because they can recover easily to defend. She needs to to come up with more offense than dumping ball into paint. I think she has pieces and come up with better movement on the offensive side but I agree so far she has not developed the offensive that can compete at the Big Ten level.
 

It appears that the consensus is that Heyer left for more money, or a more equitable situation than she was comfortable with here. The timing of her exit is curious. She clearly was unhappy with something, and it's frustrating why her departure is cloaked in secrecy.

I remember back when NIL became a thing to pay attention to in college sports, I realized that money and how it was dispersed could really be a chemistry killer in any locker room. So many ways for bad vibes to upset the apple cart.
I suppose it was a thing in the under the table, bag man era too.

Calling the 2022 class a bust is premature. Minus Heyer the others have the majority of the season to improve and Coach P’s team have shown to get better as the season progresses.
 


Be interesting to see how she gets used with the Ducks and their offense.
 



Information on Oregon
Mallory has to sit out this year before she is eligible to play at Oregon. So, she likely gets paid for two years, I would think.
 

I just clicked on the link to the Oregon announcement. Does the Duck's coach appear to be a bit too "chummy" in that photo?
 

Am I making this up or could there be some not good feelings between Mal and some of the current players. She put up an album on Instagram and then GG put up a huddle picture taken at Oregon. And Mara commented with the same GIF that one of the Oregon girls commented on Mallory’s album. Mara did NOT comment on Heyer’s…I could be way off but someone should look at the comments on both.

Who cares. Geebus, social media and likes and whatever is the biggest scourge today. She left for what she felt was a better fit for her. Good for her! I hope she excels just like I hope the Gophers excel. Settle shit on the court not on a stupid social platform.

And if that is what Mara decides to do so be it. It’s the way the system works in today’s college sports world. Treat college sports for what it is, entertainment and nothing more. Do I want my teams to win, sure, but I never get uptight over it. Tomorrow is a new day and another chance to be entertained.

You must be the zen god of college basketball fandom since you treat college sports for what it is and nothing more. Oh golly. College sports is screwed up now! I, too, hope Mara stays and continues to help this team become what she, Amaya and Holloway set out to do when they were recruited by Lindsay; to make this program relevant again. They are well on the way to doing that. Maybe we will see one or two of them get a banner up there with Lindsay’s and the others. Transferring will mean that won’t happen. I wonder if, given the portal, anyone will ever stay at a school long enough to be given that honor again.
 

Yeah its hard not to get caught up in the portal/transfer talk. I admit I do at times too. Today we're not a school with a ton of NIL but I think its improving. So it hurts more when you see players leave; but, totally get thats where we're at in college sports. I do think she, GG, and Tori are close. Hopefully they all see with those three returning, the incoming freshman, and a healthy Woodson this team could be very good next year. Oh, and add on that they can go get two from the portal themselves.
