Mallory Heyer announces she's leaving Gophers program

Grad transfer means she can transfer. Wonder if she can be eligible semester two. Gonna guess there aren’t enough minutes to go around with injured players back and growth of others.

It’s seems like a tough look though.
Wonder if Coach P was going with more scoring in McKinney or Cristian. I hate to lose her rebounding.
I’m hoping it’s because we have a lot of development happening and minutes were few. Maybe she didn’t play much at the scrimmage and saw the writing on the wall? Still seems odd.

Also wonder if Tonga was providing even more of a problem with minutes.

I could still see 10-12 trying to find minutes, all depends on freshman.

Sad to see her go. Plus rebounder and efficient from 2. Streaky from 3. Even if she lost her starting spot, as seems likely, the Gophers’ prospects are better with her, than without her.
Agreed sad to see her go as she enters transfer portal. She was a good Gophers player. Wish her well with her future team just hope it is outside of Big 10.

Ouch, terrible time to lose anyone. We know depth of team is very important. Competed hard for 3 years and tough to see this. Could want the ability of another year(with $ only going up) to land a big NIL deal elsewhere? Sounds like will enroll in spring to start MBA. Garzon left Indiana to go to Maryland so in today's game...ya never know.

I would be shocked if she landed a big NIL deal. This has "I lost my starting spot" so I am leaving all over it. (Could be wrong)
If we have players that are developing or freshman that are coming in and making an immediate impact then Coach P is doing something right.

Yes, we will lose her rebounding and experience; but, I am hoping we have the right pieces in place.

Depending on what the Grad transfers and M. Christian do I can still see 10-12 fighting for minutes. I am really interested to see if Tonga has taken her game to the next level. Was teams second leading rebounder and shot at a 58% clip. She could be a surprise.

I could see Heyer ending up at South Dakota State, Drake or even Creighton.

As Fleck has said, "It's my job to out recruit you." That's improved recruiting for Coach P is it's about playing time. Braun and Woodson back from injury. McKinney improvement.

This team needs to be more athletic to get to the next level.

Maxy has it. We need to be quicker. I was at Toledo last year and it was obvious that we need more quickness and speed. Our bigs had trouble with quicker people. Loved Mallory but if that’s what happened so be it. Women’s hoops has changed and you have to be quicker to play with the top teams.

Even if the guess is loss of playing time, assuming she still would likely play in the next five off the bench, why not stay and transfer at the end of the season? How does sitting out a year help her? There must be more than losing a starting role or loss of playing time.
One of my favorite players. Will miss her.

This is her last year of eligibility so she would not be able to play anywhere else if she played off the bench for the Gophers.

Now I will say it's interesting that she's just decided to leave instead of doing what Brylee Glenn did at K State. After she lost her starting spot, she decided to redshirt last year, still participated in practices with the team so she could get better, then transferred here for her final year.

Back in February...
I started a thread addressing this issue: "2025-2026 season starters." I gave my thoughts regarding the starting lineup... I thought Hart, Battle, Braun, Heyer, and McKinney should start. My rationale for not starting GG was that she would bring instant offense, brings a stabilizing presence (along with Braun) to the floor, and can play virtually any position.
In March, on the "Minnesota 2025-2026" thread I cited an article in the Minnesota Daily, April 6, 2006, regarding the exiting of five players. In the article Pam Borton is quoted:
"... that a large roster full of players, some with near-equal abilities, made it hard to make everyone happy.
Sixteen kids on the roster was extremely difficult to manage with playing time, 'Borton said. 'More is not better.'"

Malloy Heyer started 102 consecutive games as a Gopher. I believe she started every game at every level. Don't know her reasons, but I would think that not starting, if that was to be the case, would be a big deal... I hope her string of starts continues for the remainder of her college career... she deserves it.

It's a game of musical chairs... 6 quality players and 5 chairs.

I don't see the practices... don't know the analytics... don't know the chemistry. I can only place my trust in Coach P.

Go luck Mallory Heyer and thanks for choosing Minnesota... you are Class Act!
