Kudos to this kid. There were TONS of posts bitching about him before conference play started, about him dribbling the air out of the ball, taking away Asuma's PT, grinding the offense to a halt, whatever.

He's obviously not the quickest of guards but has really turned himself into a player. Tough as nails, fearless, steady with the ball, solid defensively, clutch.

Sucks it took him a couple months to find his role and get up to Big Ten speed. But this is the player I'd hoped we were getting based off his steady improvement at previous stops and being All-AAC at Charlotte last season.

(Most of the same applies to Frank Mitchell, for that matter. Also great to see him coming around and deliver what we'd hoped for. But felt it would've been overkill starting two separate threads :ROFLMAO: )

Our next coach has to be better at getting these transfers up to speed faster for us to compete from day 1 not day 100.
There's no substitute for game experience. We saw it with Brosmer this fall. The best case scenario would be you find some guys not in their last year of eligibility so they can find themselves in their first season and still have another full season (or more) to really take advantage of it

But then you have to worry about the highest bidder coming in and stealing your diamond in the rough, like what just happened to us with Hawkins.

It's the wild west, there's no perfect solution unfortunately.

Great post/thread - appreciate him for his contributions and cool he gets to do it at home.

Patterson is still streaky and has plenty of flaws but he is a definite key to this team and any success they are going to have over the remainder of the season.

Similar to Hawkins and Mitchell last year it took him a while to start playing at a higher level but he is finally doing that more consistently.

Yes, he's still streaky but he has been significantly better in conference than nonconference and I'd rather have it that way than the reverse. At this point, we have to acknowledge that even Garcia can be streaky from time to time.

Patterson has scored in double figures in 10 of the 14 conference games and has had 20 points or more in 4 of them.

When it comes to Patterson, perhaps some just didn't notice how much he improved from nonconference to the conference season. Here's a table showing some of those notable improvements.

NonconfConference
Field Goal Percentage
0.311
0.434
3 Point Percentage
0.207
0.362
Two Point Percentage
0.406
0.469
Free Throw Percentage
0.696
0.79
Free throw attempts/GM
2.09
4.42
Rebounds/GM
2.9
4.14
Steals/GM
0.55
1.14

I didn't calculate his Player Efficiency Rating for nonconference, but his overall season player efficiency rating is 13.7 (mediocre) while his Player Efficiency Rating in conference games is 19 (Good!). The figures in the table above are some of the primary reasons for the difference.

There were good reasons to complain about him early in the season but there were just as many good reasons to stop complaining about him more recently.

He’s a different type of guard. Almost a power type game as his strength is in the lane. Both he and Mitchell the guard have disappeared for long stretches unfortunately this season. He’s been fun to watch last few games.

Great post/info.

Non-conference bias🤔

Thanks! As far as the conference/non-conference framework, it probably was the most appropriate contrast to present Patterson's growth this season. It also served as a vehicle to couch my comments in a more diplomatic style than usual. :)
It’s easy to forget that there can be an adjustment period for players, coming to a new team/system and that they can also improve with more reps.

Yep, unusual skill set (as does Odukale).

He's pretty slow for a PG but you don't see many guards with his post game / back down ability.

Late in the USC game, I was wondering if USC's players in the huddle were saying: "Who's guarding the short, fat kid?!"

He reminds me a bit of that guard at OSU a few years ago, who was built like a FB and used to bull over guys in drives to the basket.

Powers guards are extremely fun to watch when they’re clicking.

I mean if people still think he doesn't stink idk what to say.

Patterson is a 8th man at best in a power conference
He is inconsistent to be sure....but he made 2 massive plays at the end of the UCLA game, hitting the go ahead layup and then drawing the charge by beating the UCLA player to the spot he wanted to get to.

He isn't a great player but he doesn't stink either and he has come up huge a number of times for this team, especially in the second half of the season.

Well he’s top 5 in a power conference right now. Had go ahead layup after hitting one a few minutes earlier and charge to seal the game with 11 points. 36 points on the road trip would crack almost any teams top 8.

Another poster pointed out the improvement during conference season compared to non conference. Some players take time to adjust. What more can you realistically expect?
