Limegrover interview from Pioneer Press...

I can't wait for the first time time Gray drops back to pass only to seconds later take off running.

I found some of this pretty interesting, especially when he talked about possibly having to tweak some things because of our future QBs.

It's obvious that Kill and his staff are analyzing and disecting the program they have inherited. Then, once they've obtained their analysis, they're going to meet and share their individual results. Based on what they inherited from Brewster's regime, and what types of schemes they like to run on both sides of the ball, they adapt and eventually recruit accordingly.

They've got long term systems they use and they're loyal, (coaches) to Kill and to each other. This should reduce staff and player turnover and hopefully will produce on field success as they implement their sytems into the team.

Those people that referred to Maturi as "The Blind Squirrel Finding the Nut" in regards to the Tubby Smith hire (BB) several years ago might have been correct. But, IMO, this is what I think happened to Gopher football this year during the coaching search once it became apparent that Hoke, Golden, etc., weren't even going to consider coming to the U of M.

Quite, frankly with the Kill (and long term staff) hire....Joel Maturi and Gopher Football couldn't have gotten any luckier when they got Kill to sign his five year contract. Maturi may have indeed..."found the organized nut."

I can't wait to see some read option in the mix with Gray.

I think we saw a lot of what MarQueis can do against Iowa. His TD run was all about speed, and that crushing 3rd down run on the last drive (when he took out the DB) was a classic.

Webb and Gray might be similiar types of quarterback. It will be interesting to see what occurs next year on each team.

I'm excited just like the rest of ya'll about Gray's upcoming 'arrival' as our starting QB.. But I'm really getting sick of all the Pryor comparisons.

That shall henceforth be known as "THE RUN."

Parish, and Apilate will benfit from working with Coach Klein. While not as quick as Gray, they can play the position.

They obviously know way more about Parish than I would but I thought Parish seemed quite a bit like Chandler Harnish (i'm not saying he is going to be as good as Harnish).

Parish and HArnish were both duel threat kids coming out of HS. In Parish's clips he ran the ball quite a bit and looked relatively agile. I don't think he or Harnish will ever be the kind of natural runner that MarQuis Gray is, but I think he could run enough to be like a Harnish or Persa (probably not as fast).

Persa's a weight-room beast with some good quicks, making him a bit of an anomaly. I also recall that Parrish was classified as a Dual-Threat QB, but seemed wiry in his high school highlight film (but a lot of 17 or 18 year olds look wiry).

I don't think Kill and his staff will be either out-worked or out-strategized. He's a "run first" guy, but he will probably be able to implement a number or wrinkles that will get the most out of the talent on had. We get passable athletes and I have no doubt that we are going to be competitive.

Luck didn't have a damn thing to do with it. Maturi identified Kill early in the search and when it became apparent that there was not going to be an opportunity for a "Tubby" hire - Kill became one of the primary alternatives. If Kill and his staff turn out to be as good as most people are starting to think then Maturi deserves to receive 100% of the credit for the hire. And then when you include the great design of the Gopher's Stadium, the Tubby hire, and how how well Maturi dealt with the huge problems that existed in the Athletics Department when he took over, he will have to be considered one of the best Gopher AD's ever.

I think this can't be overstated. A system like this and coaches who have been together for so long should give the U a huge boost in recruiting. I think one of the disadvantages to recruiting at the U is the Big City Campus. I think that Kill's staffs continuity will make the U the most family like it has ever been. I think the M-Men are already sensing this.

Maturi will never be in the NCAA AD Hall of Fame, but I agree that the bashing does get a bit old.

Kill may have been a fallback choice, but it should be fairly obvious that the search committee had done more than its share of due diligence on Kill's background and that he was always in the pool of candidates receiving serious attention. Kill may not have been the first choice. I think that we can agree on that. But this decision didn't come out of nowhere.

You're Missing The Point...

Kill was clearly not in the upper group of candidates early on. Once Maturi's preferred candidates told him to "F-off" his search firm kept churning up the next level of "possibly qualified" candidates, like Jerry Kill, and then let "J-Mat" consider them. It's not like he had an early "epiphany" or early insight about trying to hire Coach Kill.

I'm not here to bash Maturi. That's been done by plenty of other people when they've talked about Maturi's hiring of Brewster and Maturi's responsibility in the football team's record since the end of the Mason and through the Brewster eras. Certainly Maturi is supposed to be where the "buck" stops ($$?) in regards to Athletic Department finance issues which is certainly related to won-loss records (football). Maturi's place in Gopher Athletic History will be pretty much anonymous since he's had some successes and failures.

Let's be honest....how many major sport championships (football, hocky, mens and womens BB) have the Gophers won since J-Mat has been athletic director?
