Unreal. This team finished 9th in the Big Ten and Holers are thrilled with the coaching. They played a Miami team that couldn't even muster a crowd big enough to muster an organized cheer. A team that looked totally uninterested for another practice. Now, Holers try to convince themselves that those critical of Tubby are somehow eating crow? Good grief.
I think the Gophers played with great energy and destroyed Miami. It wasn't a close game, we blew out the 4th best team in the ACC (I believe they were 4th?) there has been significant development from the guys starting in the big 10 tourney. We just beat an NIT 2 seed and then a top half BCS team.
Not saying it solves a poor season, but it gives hope and good signs going into next year. Especially if they win the thing. If the NIT is the second tourney to the NCAA, I'd assume winning it makes us team #69. I'd think we can move up to 68 at least and into the tourney next year. That's what I am excited about.
And yes, Miami did look like they didn't care. But that is their problem, not the Gophers. Like Dakich said, you only play about 120 college games in your life, if you can't get up for any tournament game you need to look yourself in the mirror as a player. Enjoy playing basketball and give it your all. I think the Gophers deserve credit for coming to play and taking it to a team with much higher rated players. They responded every time Miami tried to make a run by applying the gas and not folding up and quitting. That showed, to me, a sign of improving mental toughness and they need to keep it up. Especially since Miami played 3 juniors, 1 sophomore, and 1 freshman over 20 minutes compared to Minnesota playing 2 juniors, 1 sophomores, and 2 freshman over 20 minutes. Miami played a Sr. 18 minutes while MN played a Jr 18 minutes. That shows me we brought energy and thoroughly outplayed (and outcoached) an older and more highly rated team. I think that's a pretty good thing.
Add in that 2 of the 3 juniors Minnesota played were JUCO and are in their first season of BCS ball, one of which usually averages about 7 minutes a game. Our 3 biggest minutes getters were two freshman (coleman - 35, Andre - 38) and a sophomore (Austin - 33).
If that all still gives you not the slightest amount of optimism, I don't know what will.
Nothing can change the 6-12, 9th place big 10 finish. Absolutely nothing at this point. Why not enjoy the quality basketball this team is playing right now and see that things should improve next year, and if they still don't, feel free to start the negativity and anti mediocrity acceptance at that point.
