Mods stop being so scared to have controversy. Lets have an open discussion about how much different the whole Royce situation would be handled differently if he wasn't an outspoken black athlete.

Maybe you should start.

Outspoken plus Tattoos, Crazy hair, chest pounding, Youtube videos, everything adds up to hate. Do you really think that Royce isn't being hurt because he is black and messing up?

Now this is a challenge...

Wow. I find myself struggling to comprehend, to get my head around, the shear and monumental stupidity behind this post. I think I would liken it to the size of the galaxy, it's just too vast to even understand.

I'm not quite sure which part of the situation would be handled differently if Royce weren't black;

Is it the part about getting kicked out of HS?

The part about shoplifting $100 from a major department store?

The part about shoving a security guard to the ground repeatedly?

The part about being somewhere on campus where you're apparently not supposed to be, after already being kicked out of one of THOSE places?

Or maybe the part about being expected to be a proper representative of the institution that is providing you with a complete free ride and free education and not managing to meet those paltry expectations after being on campus for BARELY TWO MONTHS?

I'm just not quite sure which part you think would have been handled differently?

As a side note, I hope the rest of you aren't as dumb as I am by actually responding to this. With any luck, this won't develop any real legs...

He's being hurt because he is messing up. His race has nothing to do with it. But, as long as you make him a victim, he'll keep messing up because he'll have that built in excuse. Your suggestion hardly deserves discussion so I enter my reply with hesitation.

Please do tell how this is a race issue. It is ignorant people like this that try to make it a race issue. Maybe that means you are racist for thinking that the reason he is in this position is because he is a black athlete. I cannot stand it when people try to make everything into a racial issue when it is not. How are we suppose to move ahead as a society with these dip*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#s.

Royce White is not playing because he broke the law, plain and simple. Correct me if I am wrong, but isnt the reason he is being questioned on the computer thing because he was seen leaving that dorm at the time of the theft? And that he had been banned from that dorm?

Wow

Please don't belittle the many injustices that (despite DLguy's belief) actually ARE about racial prejudices with Royce White's situation.

As for White being outspoken... don't confuse acting crazy with being outspoken:

Malcolm X = outspoken

Malcolm in the Middle = crazy

The PP headline quote from Tubby is the best advice to Royce to date:

BE PATIENT

OK.

OK. First, as others have asked, "Royce is outspoken"? He just seems like a teenager to me.

Second, "...how much different the whole Royce situation would be handled ... if he wasn't black" ?
My response is "no difference".

It isnt his skin color, it is his behavior that has gotten him where he is.

This post is from the same moronic line of thinking that complains that people that do not kiss Obama's ass must be redneck racists.

Not true, 201...

"if he wasn't black" and couldn't play basketball, his ass would have been bounced from campus altogether a LONG time ago.

Until this ridiculous post, I've never said one negative thing about Mr. White on this entire topic. I'm disappointed in some of his actions, hope he learns from them, and sincerely hopes he gets things together enough to be able to play for this team and represent the University in a positive way in the future. I think I speak for all of us when I say I'm pulling for him. This is too early in life to start heading down a road like this.

Good luck, Royce!! Is any of this sinking in yet?...

The reasons it has been so much in the news lately:

1) HIGHLY rated prospect - highest in at least a decade
2) Local kid
3) Many had heard of him casually before he got "in trouble."
4) Tubby instantly brought more media focus on the team when he arrived here
5) Other athletes have been in trouble recently, so these situations are already familiar to news directors, and thus easier to give the green light to a reporter to cover

Race is not one of these issues. Period.

He's a high-profile athlete at a major University. Has nothing to do with his race.

Exactly- for a precedent look at Shane Schilling and Joel Pryzbylla. Nobody was happy with either of them when they had issues either.

Obviously race is an issue in the scenario. Agreeing to that doesn't make you hateful or racist, but a significant segment of Royce's detractors view him not as a troubled athlete, but as a trouble 'black' athlete. It bothers some that a black man can get more chances than they could in their point of view. Some people view their 'whiteness' as a detriment in society...when in reality it is Royce's marketable skills and fame, not race, that will ultimately get him special treatment.

I am not one to argue with the "High Priest of Good Times" !

:):):)

Its the same reason that it was easy to hate on the U (Miami Football) and Allen Iverson. Black athletes that are good and in your face are always hated by the white public. Sorry to say but its true.

Trevor was charged on 100% circumstantial evidence. Marish had the same situation but no charge. Weird??? How about this, most people on this board think trevor is not guility and want him back, but Royce should be kicked off and is a thug.

Personally, I think Trevor would be playing if it weren't for White's problems.

You are as laughable as Rev. Sharpton, Rev. Wright, and Louis Farrakhan

minor point..

Royce pled guilty. Trevor has not.

If there was ever a case where this has nothing to do with race, this is it. After all, it's a black coach who suspended a black player. Him being suspended has absolutely nothing to do with being black. It has to do with him making some unbelievably stupid choices on several occasions. On top of that, he pled guilty in the Mall of America shop-lifting case, so he's not outspoken. Rather, he's admitted to engaging in criminal activity. As a result, he gets judged. Sorry, that's how it works.

Ummm, have you missed the simple fact that the coach who suspended him is BLACK?! If logic is indeed a learned skill, somewhere along the way you failed.

I disagree. If anything, its the opposite. Trevor's charges are aggravated assault, a felony punishable by up to 5 years in PRISON. You can't blame Maturi for keeping him out because of the seriousness of the charges.

I think the scrutiny that the charges against Trevor brought to the program may have resulted in Royce getting harsher treatment. If Brewster were the coach of the basketball team, Royce would already be back.

Seems like a slippery slope ...

Seems like a slippery slope to:

  1. Decide you know what's in peoples' minds;
  2. generalize from what may be a few posters' thoughts to the opinions of many; and,
  3. claim what's in the minds of those few posters without providing any direct quotes

In the past I've called out one racist who used to post on this board ... but always with direct quotes. Neither of you have done either to date.

Quotes like "hated by the white public" and "most people" or even "a significant segment" are speculative at best and stereotypical at worst.

Best suggestion I can come up with is either provide data to support your contention or keep your fingers off the keyboard.

maresh punched a chick in the face and tried to pull down her pants? must've missed that. was it before or after he got in a fight outside of a bar like willie van de steeg?

Royce pled guilty. Trevor has not.

that is crazy? i still don't get why people would think royce is guilty and trevor isn't. oh wait...i'm not brew recruit and i have common sense. royce is probably guilty because he said so himself.

brew recruit - did he plead guilty because he's black?

This is the stuff that White is being told by his "friends". And sadly, White and many of his friends absolutely believe it.

So how would situations be handled if we were talking about a white guy?

1. Shane Shilling. The starting SG ran into several legal problems and was dropped from the team. (Unfortunately, problems have followed him since).

2. Mitch Ohnstad. A part time starter got a second DUI in the off season. The Gophers withdrew his scholarship.

3. Joel Przybilla. The current NBA player was suspended for not going to class. That was just a few days after playing his best college game against Indiana. Joel left the team in mid-season and is still hated by some for quitting on the team.

Keep reaching G-Homer, keep reaching. I take it that you don't remember Joel Pryz.? Kid was hated more than anyone in Gopher Hoops History.
