University of Minnesota football coach Tracy Claeys announced today that quarterback Mitch Leidner underwent successful surgery on his left foot this morning and will be limited in upcoming spring practices. This surgery was previously scheduled and was not a result of any injury suffered in Monday's Quick Lane Bowl.

“Mitch’s surgery went well,” said Claeys. “We will be careful with his recovery process, but hope to have him back at full strength in four months or so.”

Leidner started all 13 games for Minnesota this year and passed for 2,701 yards (fourth-most ever in a single season) and 14 touchdowns (tied for 12th all-time). His 242 completions rank third all-time in a single season and are the most ever for a Minnesota junior quarterback. Leidner’s 407 attempts also rank third all-time in a single season. He became the second Gopher quarterback (Mike Hohensee in 1982) ever to pass for 250 yards or more in four straight games. Leidner also rushed 107 times for 270 yards and six touchdowns this year.

Leidner completed 24-of-30 passes for 223 yards and a touchdown as he was named MVP of the Quick Lane Bowl on Monday. He also rushed nine times for 19 yards and a score.

Claeys also announced that three players – Berkley Edwards, Desmond Gant and Craig James – have been granted their release from Minnesota.

“We wish all three of them the best and thank them for their contributions to the program,” said Claeys. “Craig James wants to be close to his family, while Desmond is seeking an opportunity for more playing time. Berkley indicated to us that he is leaving our football program to pursue track full time.”

In regards to the transfers, have to respect all guys decisions. Most sad to lose James as he seemed like a solid player but wish them all nothing but the best

I feel bad about James as he was an early contributor. I felt.really good when he took over punt return duties from shaky Marcus Jones. He seemed cool as a cucumber.
James lost his mojo in 2016 and he looked like a different player. I'm sure the injury and idle time didn't help his cause.
I hope James has a successful career wherever he goes.

With Jeff Jones, Berkley Edwards, Desmond Gant and Craig James gone or leaving, how many scholarship slots are available yet to be filled?

Grant should have been a LB. Very good athlete, but hands of stone.

So is Edwards going to run track at the U or somewhere else?

It's good to know Leidner has "successful" surgery. Has any team or athlete ever put out a press release to announce an "unsuccessful" surgery? What would constitute an "unsuccessful" surgery? (short of death......)

Has anybody heard how wait!what? foot surgery went to remove his foot from his mouth?

why would my foot be in my mouth? if leidner is what you want in a 3rd yr starting qb at the BCS level, go nuts.
he correctly calls in the play and hands off a clean ball....everything else is subpar. donkeyball is all you'll ever get from him.

What the hell are you going to be able to talk about in a year from now

Funny. Just once I'd like to hear the HC or players say:

They botched the surgery.

I hate the new OC hire.

We're glad he finally graduated.

I'd go to Florida too if I were him.

They didn't find it there. They called me in, and I found it.

Doc - As a specialist I think you should join Peter Mortell's specialist group. You don't needed to be threatened by him even though he clearly would be the top hands guy. Just remember, for what your hands are used for, all that is required is that they be warm.

I can see it now....

"Leidner's surgery is botched, now has a 2nd foot growing out of his left leg."

So is Perra sticking around?

So is Perra sticking around?

Any news, anyone?

We need decent QBs to run the opponents plays in the scout teams. Also, we'll never know how good he is as a third string backup. Playing against TCU early and with all the injuries to the team, he and Croft did not see any opportunities. Leidner had to play a lot in all four non conference games when we could not put the teams away early.

I can understand why Kill was livid with Teague for scheduling TCU without consulting the coaches. There was a reason why we paid off SC not to play against them. The team did not need to play tough opponents early in the rebuilding process.

The selfless walk-ons and other bench players are unsung heroes who may never see the playing field. They are consummate team players who contribute to the team immensely.

I hope Perra decides to stay.
