Lehigh Safety Mikhai Smith commits to MN.

I was really bummed/pissed when I heard Perich was hitting the portal. It was such a great story but he chose money over being a legend and a hometown hero. That being said it seems it freed up a pot of money to build a better overall team. It seems PJ has hit on all or most players he is targeting.

For people who keep asking "How did Cignetti do it?" he did it largely with guys with this type of profile.

Lots of all-conference level players from FCS and G5.

Koi was never going to be a "legend" here unless the Gophers had a huge season (make the CFP) in 2026

Antoine Winfield Jr led the defense for the Gophers best season since 1961, made a ton of huge plays along the way, then won a Super Bowl, All Pro, and became the top paid DB in NFL history at one point and he's not really a "legend" for most Gopher fans. Safety just doesn't have that impact on people.

I disagree here. He absolutely would've been a "legend" here. He already had a 2nd team all-american and all big-ten (twice) going into what is probably his last season where he could add a third while being a high draft pick. I think many view Eric Decker as a "Gopher Legend' and he wasn't on a team that won above 7 games.

Right, the 'one of us' multiplier would factor in huge. AWJr isn't a minnesotan despite his dad being a Viking great.

I think you're wrong about that.

I think you're wrong about that.

Maybe so. I've got a AWJr Bucs jersey in my closet living in Tampa Bay. He's my favorite non-Vikings NFLer. I just don't hear him talked about that way on GH or in Gopher circles. He's not a focus player for the many Bucs fans I know, even though he's often been their best player. But he's a safety. All about Evans and Baker and such. Bucky Irving is probably better known.

"Legend" is also a very squishy thing to define

He may not be a “Legend” but AWjr is definitely one of the most revered players of this generation of Gopher fans.

After last year, Koi showed flashes and was on that trajectory. The hometown factor and HS legend status would have only added to the lore.

I'd consider Tyrone Carter to be a legend. Maybe some of the stuff he said recently might change that, but if you go just off his time in Dinkytown....
