"I've gotten to get to know [Fleck] a little bit more since our move to the Big Ten here. Everything I thought I knew about P.J. is not really what I knew. He's an unbelievable human, has a cause, believes in what he believes in," Lanning said at his weekly press conference.

Go Gophers!!

Very genuine, despite his used car salesman reputation.
I don’t mean to be an ass. But it’s ALWAYS a certain type of guy that characterize PJ that way. (We all know who they are.)
Is that just a coincidence? I doubt it.

Characterize him which way, genuine or used car salesman?

One of my co-workers lived in the dorm room right next to PJ at NIU. Said he was a great dude. Very genuine, despite his used car salesman reputation.
I think PJ Fleck is genuine, but 99% of the people on the planet that speak in their own catch phrases of full of sh!t. That said, I do think this really is PJ.

Love that. I think it’s pretty well-established at this point that PJ doesn’t have a “schtick” — the RTB stuff, culture, family, service, etc. are 100% genuine. I’m not saying he’s a perfect human being, but it’s also pretty clear that none of what he professes to want for his players is manufactured for recruiting or media purposes. If it was phony, he would’ve been called out by countless ex-players, coaches, and media members by now. Apparently, he’s just a really good guy who visits hospitals, takes care of his players, loves his family, organizes diaper drives, etc. Glad he’s our coach.

I want to differentiate a bit about the word "schtick" and I hope I'm not nitpicking because I agree with what you have written. I think Fleck has a "schtick" in a positive sense to help explain to the public his view of the world and his place in it. The slogans--which are often taken by his detractors as a shallow schtick--are a means of conveying his belief system. He's quick on his feet and witty and somehow that rankles some folks because they can't look past the verbiage to see the man.

It's because his rise to relevance happened the complete opposite way of those who denigrate him. They think the way to get to the top is by using people and climbing over/on top of them to achieve their goals, whereas Fleck is genuine and raises people up with him. It's intentional ignorance because it challenges everything they know and believe.

PJ Fleck is the same guy when the camera turns off. He is NOT fake. What you see is exactly who he is. That's why in my opinion it works. He genuinely believes what he says. Its easier to convince players (and people) to follow you and do what you say if you believe it yourself.

He’s the Tony Robbins of head coaches. If he was taking us to a big bowl every other year who cares. He hasn’t. Today that could change have the fellas come out like a house a fire.
