$91 million contract ($13 million first year). Mississippi's DC, Pete Golding, is immediately made permanent head coach at Ole Miss, which is 11-1 this year.

If coaches aren't sticking around to guide their teams through the CFP, how far away are we from a significant number of players opting out?

Can you imagine in the NFL if Ben Johnson left the Bears after New Year's, because he has already accepted an offer to coach the Giants in 2026?

Messed up.

Kiffin just comes off like a dink. How do disloyal people like that recruit kids and convince them to come play for “me”?
Well, gotta assume that it selects for kids that don’t value loyalty. We’ll see how that works out for him in the NIL/portal era.

No college athlete values loyalty anymore. I guarantee you the first thing anyone in the portal is going to ask any coach is how much. Anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional.

Can’t they just follow him to lsu with the new transfer rules?? Would probably be better compensated with tiger money as well.

Ole Miss making him announce prior to the playoff was dumb.
Disagree, can totally understand Ole Miss wanting him out the door as quick as possible once he accepted the LSU job.

They are in the same conference. If Fleck accepted the Penn State job today would you want him to stay and coach the bowl game for us?

I don't think it will be all that common where a CFP team is in danger of losing their coach most years but this if Lane Kiffin so of course the situation is messy as everything with that dude is messy.

I won't be shocked when some player opts out of a CFP game for selfish reasons but I also think those opt outs won't ever become all that common because most players are going to want the chance to compete for a National Title.

The difference is Kiffen wanted to coach but Ole Miss made him leave after taking a new job. So in your analogy, if would be like the Bears telling Johnson to stop coaching before the season is over.

If we were in the same position as Ole Miss (CFP), I would want fleck to finish out the season. As a program I would think you want to maximize the probability of winning the championship in any given year- in this case Kiffin ( and the OC) coaching obviously elevates that probability.

Bowl games and the CFP are not even remotely equivalent.

However, in both cases I would say "see ya" even though in the short term it could be costing a National Title.

It only takes a couple of players in key positions to have a dramatic impact on a teams outcome in the CFP. Starting QB or some other star.

I wouldn't. I think you could really play into the "He abandoned us, we'll show him" type of motivation. In this day and age with transfers, the last thing you'd want is the players rallying around the coach you know is leaving for a rival. That could result in even more players jumping ship after the season to follow him.

I also think it's just as likely some players get pissed off with him still around the program.

I love that three Ole Miss players called out Joey and said BS that the team wanted him to stay and coach.

I will be rooting for them to win the whole enchilada now, as the championship won’t be credited to him😃

Yeah....I can't imagine players would want him to stick around after taking another job. I'm sure they understand why he did it and a bunch of them will probably try and follow him to LSU after their season ends....but in the short term I know I wouldn't want him hanging around and being a constant distraction knowing he is planning for his new job while pretending to still care about his old one.

I’m glad they did!!! Don’t let him have his cake and eat it also - they maintained their dignity.

Gid Bless you Bo - Always loved that you told Freider that he wasn’t going to coach Michigan in March Madness and Fisher ended up winning the whole dang thing. Balls the size of Boulders💪

He lied about the meeting and them wanting him to stay, so he could be the aggrieved party and try to change the narrative. That guy’s slimier than primordial ooze.

My 18-22 year old self would drive to Baton Rouge so I could tell him man to eunuch to F Off and that I’m going to whoop his azz on the field, every year I remain at Ole Miss.

You can’t let people treat you like you like a female 🐶; if you don’t respect yourself, no one else will.

Kiffin always continues to reinforce his premiership as the biggest coaching ass in football. Why does anything he does surprise anyone? This is what you’re going to get from this guy.

Also if I didn’t hope for better, don’t drink before noon on a weekday, kids.

LSU deserves him and should start saving up for his buyout in 3 years.

Moronic take. TF do you find a way to blame Ole Miss for this? Jeebus.

No way he stays to coach when he's already accepted another job.

It is not a wise or sustainable business model. This is why the NFL put significant structure around coaches and players changing hands.

A coach bails on a team literally in the mix for the championship. And it is not just any coach, it is THAT friggin' guy of all people. He can coach, but he is also a narcisstic jackass with a litany of high profile breakups, personal and professional.

The coaches started this crap decades ago, and now the chickens have come home to roost.
