LAGopher: Nolen and Williams academically ineligible for 2nd semester?

LAGopher wrote this in the Nolen thread an hour ago, but given it's implications, I thought it should have it's own thread.

LAGopher said he heard this information "from a member of the academic advisor team."

Has anyone heard any more info about this? If so, this is the first time I've heard of it, as I thought people said everyone was doing fine in class?

I don't want to make something of it if it's entirely false/incorrect, but given the HUGE implications for this if true (we'd be down to 9 guys, not to mention losing our starting PG for the year), I'm wondering if anyone else has some insight either way?

This potential news is WAY worse than anything else we've had to deal with thus far this year because both of these guys are proven quantities on the court that have been playing well lately.

Not way worse!! In my opinion losing both Royce and Trevor was worse as that took us from a Big Ten Title/Final Four contender down to a team that is fighting to make the NCAAs and win 10/11 BT games. If this is true and neither Royce nor Trevor return, we will struggle to be a .500 team in BT play. Hope its not true and hope we get RW and/or TM back.

Guarantee none of this is true... Wasn't it Nolen's freshman year he made the Deans list?? There was something on the Journey about it that year...

I like guarantees, so thanks!! And thaks for reminding me about KP, i figured i was in denial or just forgot about someone

Wouldn't they already have been held out? I know in football, you would be held out of the bowl game. I would've thought they would be held out as soon as grades were posted.

Do they treat basketball differently? (As in the time the announce academic suspensions)

I don't believe they would technically be ineligible until the second semester begins. When Greg Stiemsma and Marcus Landry were ineligible for UW a few seasons ago, they played in the first four Big 10 games, missing their first game around Jan. 20th.

You are sticking with coach speak.

Considering this has come from two different sources already, I would say this is very real. I 100% doubt it is speculation. Otherwise why would Tubby address it at all?

I would take the public acknowledgment that it might only be incompletes as the lone positive.

But let's all hope for the best.

I tend to agree with your thoughts, but I am hopeful all is ok. If not, then I think it is a slight mark on Tubby, with multiple players in consecutive years have issues to go along with the other issues. Not that it is his fault per say, but he is the face of the program...

Haven't been able to get any rock solid info on this subject but don't like what I'm hearing and the rumors going around right now are coming from all over. Hopefully it's just that, rumors, and it won't be as bad as some think it might be.

Great. Should have figured something like this would happen. After all, things were entirely too peaceful around here over the past month or so.:mad:

I first heard about Al being in danger of becoming ineligible right after X-mas but I was told there was hope he could make up the work. This story has been backed up by several sources so I doubt it's not true. We'll have to wait to see if he made the work up.

Here is the thing, we may not have total clarity on this -- either way -- for another week. We may not know for almost two weeks.

Second semester classes don't start until the day after MLK (next Tuesday). That means everybody can likely play at Michigan State and at Indiana. Because there is no midweek game next week, the first game after the start of the second semester is Michigan State at home on the 23rd.

We may not know for sure until we see guys in uniform or in street clothes for that game against the Spartans.

Maybe. I'm sure our friend Myron P Metcalf will be all over this since one since it's about off-court stuff. The MSU home game being the first without them would be terrible timing. That game is in many ways the most important game of the season. One does have to start feel that the Gopher athetics has an unshakable black cloud over it.

OK, so let's say the rumors are true, just for hypothetical reasons (and because they could be). Then does that mean that these two guys would be done for the rest of the year? If so, particularly at the point guard position and on the press, that would hurt.

On the bright side, Joseph and Cobbs would likely increase at playing time, both of them seem to have plenty ability to step up into the role.

I believe in his chat last week he already hinted something was up with Nolen, but said he could not say at this moment. I agree i am sure he will have something more for us this week because it is his job

Joseph and Cobbs would split PG if it happens. Bostick would get more time also.

This rumor started last week. Already a long thread on it on this board.

Just to clarify when I started that thread it was merely a copy from the Wisconsin Scout board. There still hasn't been anything that's been confirmed or otherwise that it was indeed just a rumor driven by Tubby's comments that a player(s) have incompletes.

Still, to this point, nothing has been verified or confirmed.

No worries.

The press has been working very well. Nolen is our best defender. From that standpoint it would be devestating, no offense to Cobbs or Joseph. Also, if we are all the way down to 9, it will simply be much more difficult to press, from a fatigue and foul standpoint.

I am counting on Nolen (and Williams) being there all year. But (worst case scenario) with regards to 'down to 9' - hopefully we would be able to add Bryant and Dawkins to the 9 BB scholarship players to make it a total of 11 players eligible to play on the team.

Forgive me, but who is Dawkins again? I know we have 1 football player (Allen) and 1 walk-on. He is the walk-on? The name escaped me for some reason. In any case, I doubt they would play much unless it was an emergency.

Dominique Dawson is a walk-on freshman from the Twin Cities metropolitan area. I am assuming that is who is meant by Dawkins. However, he would probably not play since the plan is for him to redshirt this season.

That being said, if Nolen is ineligible (I do not give the rumors much weight, but rumors like this that stick around have a tendency to come true in some cases) I think it could provide Cobbs with valuable PT. Cobbs has shown flashes of being a very capable point guard. Clearly, he gives up some on-the-ball defending skills to Nolen, but I think he could add a new dimension to our offense: a point guard that is a legitimate scoring threat. I know Nolen can drive at times, but it really kills our offense when our PG is a very limited scoring threat from outside.

Center - u r right - I meant Dawson - The alliteration of Dominique Dawson and Darryl Dawkins might have me being subliminally hopeful in the comparison.

Tubby has said he might use him if he needed him this year.

LAGopher,

>>...letting this out would be cause for dismissal but SHE/he works on the athletic academic advisor team...<<

Not for long. Academic records are confidential and exposure by an underling like this won't be tolerated.

And you should be banned from posting for airing this.

With as many advantages as today's D-I athletes receive (laptops, tutors, internet courses, study guides, excused absences, etc), they almost have to want to be declared ineligible to do so.

Let's worry about it if and when the rumor turns into fact. If it does, we will go with what we have. Reality is the loss of Williams does not impact us significantly, but Nolen's absence would sting. If it is a fact I am very disappointed. With all the resources they have at their disposal and individual academic advisors, I can't believe it would get to this point with not just one, but two of our players. Sounds like a breakdown in the advising process if it is. Let's hope it's just a rumor.

G4L...please notice that I said this right after Goldy posted:

Goldy, if a "member" of the academic advisor team spread this before it happened, it would be a firing offense for violation of confidentiality. Period.

We totally agree on the violation of confidentiality...A Firing Offense.

Hahaha. I should be banned for posting this?? Get a life moron. I was just posting what I heard. If I get banned so be it...I have only posted about 10 times in my life. I have much better things to do than troll a message board.

I agree. The person leaking this info may have to face the music, but to ban everyone who posted rumors on an internet message board is an oxy-moron.

The problem is not with the person who posted something on the board, the problem is with a person spewing the info and GIVING NAMES... "...SHE/he is a member of the academic advisor team..."

How about we all just relax and wait until the 20th to find out if it is true or not.

LAGopher,

>>I have much better things to do than troll a message board.<<

Then do them.

And speaking of morons, they're the ones who pass on highly questionable info about confidential matters.
