per KSTP:

Once the Gophers Director of Athletics, Joel Maturi is still on campus. He's now teaching Sports Management courses and in August began a new position on the NCAA's Committee of Infractions.

Maturi once had the palatial corner office in the Bierman Athletic Building. He's now on the second floor of Cooke Hall with no windows, yet seems as content as ever.

Go Gophers!!

Please just go away.

Some Folks will just not leave a party when it's time to go home.

Yeah I usually can't stand listening to Maturi speak but this video is a pretty decent listen. JM talks about the perception differences of MN football compared to other Big Ten markets.

Those who can't........... teach.

There are only two things you need to know about Joel Maturi:

1. TCF Bank Stadium was designed and built while he was AD.

2. Jerry Kill was hired while he was AD.

Thanks to Joel for his excellent contributions to the future of Gopher football. He has left the football program in better shape than every other AD since the 1960's.

3. He hired Tim Brewster.

The name that should never be spoken rises again.

The best part of the interview is when he complained about the U only having a 50,000 seat stadium....I thought that was his idea. Once again, talking down the U and talking down our state to the very end. "There's reasons why we haven't been to the Rose Bowl in 50 years". Just make him go away. Teague should demand that he never give another interview as long as he's employed by the U. He's the worst thing to happen to Minnesota athletics in the last 50 years.

does anyone know why he still (or why he ever started) refer to himself in third person.

instead of saying "I think this" he says "Joel Maturi thinks"...very strange, even for the man down by the river.

The guy needs to retire. He's taking a job away from someone.

I truly believe Joel Maturi was a good person who did some good things for the U but obviously made some major mistakes as well. Enough said there. As far as your other statement ... You obviously had a difficult time in school. Everyone in every profession has to have had a teacher who made a significant contribution to that student in order for them to be successful.

He wasn't complaining about only having 50,000 seats and he wan't talking down the U.

There is plenty to complain about with JM but let's not make things up.

Not in Joel's case. Pretty much spot on.

Outside of the Brewster hire, where did Joel really screw the U? I agreed with the Mason firing. He got fb back to campus and he did hire Kill. The simple fact is, the U does have a hard time getting U sports in the spot light in a crowded Mpls market. Also, the U has not had to cut sports, like a lot of other schools have over the past decade. I admit that the Brewster hire was bad, but at the time he was hiring a coach with recruiting ability, which was lacking with Mason. I don't really understand all the hate toward Joel.

I don't really understand all the hate toward Joel.

I think much of the hatred is related to the perception that all sports are created equal. Many of us would rather see money put back into revenue generating sports and the lesser sports be damned. I personally couldn't care less if sports like soccer are canned. I would rather have nicer football, basketball and hockey facilities.

Joel seemed more like everyone gets a star for trying kind of person.

Joel is an idiot; period end of story. The fact that he is still collecting a U paycheck while probably building us his pension makes me sick. Go away and shut up, Joel.

Here is a news flash. The AD doesn't get to decide what sports get funded at the U. The following is a list of who gets to decide before the AD gets his or her input. I assume most GopherHolers remember what happened when the U tried to eliminate gymnastics and golf awhile back.

1. U.S. Congress (Title IX)

2. Minnesota Citizens, Voters, and Taxpayers

3. Minnesota Legislature

4. Minnesota Governor

5. Board of Regents

6. President of U

7. Vice President of the U who administers the Athletics Department

8. Athletics Director

Understood but the AD is still the face of the athletics department so he gets the blame. I'm not sure what the end result of Teague's plan will be but at least he created a plan to address facilities.

Lets see, compares our fans, our stadium and our kids and says none of them compare to other states. Said we will never be where Wisconsin is, maybe he ought to go back there.

Joel Maturi is a winner and made necessary changes to the Athletic Department. Teague is a marketer and will bring additional changes to the program. Hopefully, Lou Nanne brings in the funds for the infrastructure improvements and improves the AD endowment funds. But, let us give Joel his due. He had decent and growing attendance for women's hockey, wrestling, and volleyball. The rankings nationally for those are 1, 4 and 14 in attendance.

And if those are your priorities then he was a stud. If not, he was a putz. Different priorities for different folks.

Man listening to that interview with Maturi made me really angry. Angry at the "U" for hiring a guy who clearly didn't have the stomach or skill for major college athletics and angry at myself for investing my time in the the teams here while he was in charge. I find it both hilarious and sad that this guys uses every message board type excuse for Minnesota's failures in the major sports over the last X number of years. Some of the excuses even blatantly contradict themselves. Norwood Teague can't be anything but an improvement (but that doesn't mean he will be good).

Maturi needs to go away and stop chiming in on what goes on with Gopher athletics. He was a crummy AD and he should just leave it at that. Thankfully, he's been removed and can no longer make any more stupid decisions that cost the department.

On the other hand, for some strange reason, the media loves checking in on him ad naseum and he is only too happy to volunteer his views. Unfortunately, we'll be stuck listening to this drivel until the media realizes his opinions don't matter in the slightest

That made me want to launch my laptop into the street when he started whining about the bloggers and message boards. He never once said what a great university the U is, only that we aren't Michigan, Ohio State and most of all we aren't Wisconsin. He continues to rob us blind to this very day. Students in his sports management class are who I feel sorriest for. I can only imagine the garbage they have to put up with about what a great university badgertown is.

Really would love it if he went away and got involved with something other than the u of m. Just a complete loser mentality. Please Joel go find some other public body to over pay you.

Maturi was and is a loser. He is a major reason, possibly #1, why we've gone through this last decade of pain. Every decision he made up until the Kill hire was massively blundered, costing the U money, and hurting the AD.
His interview in camp Randall in 2010 was so infuriatingly positive of all things badgers, he should have been punched in the face by one of the players.
POS needs to keep his mouth shut and take solace that he did his job Barry sent him to do, stifle the semi resurgence of Mason's MN football program and build a culture of losing in wisconsin's rival.

How's that for message board whining Joel.

Drunk again or just way out of line?
