Koi is now the Gopher record holder for interceptions as a true freshman with 5.

2 more to tie AW Jr for the single season record of 7, I believe.

He also is close to a punt return record as well.

Hard to believe some didn’t think he would have an impact this year!

Kid was one of the highest rated recruits to ever come here so there was always a chance he was going to make an impact right away but sometimes even the best true freshman need time to adjust to the college game.

It was not insane to think that a kid who played his high school ball in small town Minnesota was going to need some time to adjust to the Big Ten. Perich has proven to be one of those rare talents who was able to make the adjustment quickly and it has been a ton of fun to watch.

But it is never a sure thing that a true freshman is going to be ready during their first year of college ball, most aren't.

Totally warranted to expect a small contribution.

A pleasant surprise to see him outperform expectations by meeting his potential so soon!

The exciting part is that for as good as he has been he is still just a true freshman which means he should have tons of room for improvement and growth over the next few years.

Given where he is already at right now, he has a chance to leave the U of M in a few years as the greatest DB to play at the University of Minnesota and we have had some good ones.

Most likely, if he avoids injury, the next Gooher to be drafted in the first round.

Although, it’s hard to do that as a safety.
 

Koi was on KFAN this morning being interviewed by Paul Allen. Certainly didn't come across as a freshman from a small town in Minnesota. He was pretty articulate and, no surprise, very confident in himself.

I came in several minutes late but some other things :
--Called Minnesota "Safety U" and said that their history of turning out guys who are playing safety in the NFL was one of the two main factors in deciding to come to Minnesota.
--The other main factor was a belief in PJ and where he has this program headed.
--He did visit Ohio State but it was vague on whether he took a visit to U of Florida because Allen was trying hard to get a scoop.
--Loved playing in the Rose Bowl and how cool the dressing room was with photos of greats who had played in the Rose Bowl on the walls.
--He thought about playing hockey at one point but didn't, which makes me wonder how many other safeties, ends, running backs, linebackers, etc. the Gophers might have missed over the years because they fell in love with hockey.
--Loves NIL and the opportunities it offers. (Duh)
--Didn't want to comment much on the portal stating that he's focused on the present and deals with things as they come.
--Really appreciates the support he gets from the people in Esko and enjoys that so many of them and obviously his family get to watch him play.
--Doesn't like Hermantown.
--Paul Allen is an insufferable dickhead.

Had this been a direct quote from Koi he would have automatically became the greatest gopher of all time.
 




I guarantee if Koi played HS ball in a football hotbed or at a high profile academy, he would have been a top 50 ranked recruit. He flies under the radar a little being a player from a small school outside of Duluth, MN.

And rightfully so. Even through my maroon and gold glasses I didn't see the instant impact. I thought he would have a nice career - maybe the very top end would be Tyler Nubin. By that I mean Nubin eventually became one of the best in the nation but it took 4-5 years to reach that point. I never thought that a 2A school in Northern Minnesota would produce someone that would become one of our best players 5 months after his high school graduation.

In MN high school football even in 2A football there are different levels. Generally speaking the northern schools a clear step down than the southern schools like Chatfield, Caledonia, Springfield, and historically Triton, WEM. etc.

Fleck was singing a different tune about NIL in his press conference today. Sounds like some good things must be happening on that front.

I am sure they will do everything possible to make sure Koi is happy here. He could have gone to Ohio State or pretty much any school he wanted to out of high school so it isn't like he wasn't noticed by those places.

I have no doubt the sharks will be circling after the season (probably already are). Just have to hope we can do enough and that combined with his love or playing at home at a school that turns out safeties for the NFL is enough to keep him here. Until he gives us a reason to worry my assumption is that he is going to be around for the long haul.

That's what makes him even more amazing. Not where he was born and raised but how he could reach such athletic heights playing that level of competition.

Off topic, but the one that got away because we were so far behind in NIL was Bucky. I bring him up because I live in the Tampa TV market and all Bucs games are on here.

Bucky defies description. His moves in traffic put Barry Sanders in awe. You've got him right in front of you and go in to hit him ... and he's not there. He is just amazing.
