The Gophers landed their first running back for this year's recruiting class Monday night, when Kobe McCrary announced he was picking Minnesota.

McCrary is a 6-1, 230-pound back from Butler (Kan.) Community College, the same school from which the Gophers just plucked offensive lineman Garrison Wright.

McCrary, a native of Chipley, Fla., is a consensus three-star recruit who also had reported offers from Southern Miss, Colorado State and Akron. He rushed for 1,190 yards (5.3 per carry) and 22 touchdowns last fall.

My guess is that they will hand him the ball (and perhaps even pitch or throw it to him), at which point he will attempt to move the ball in a forward motion toward the opponent's endzone.
 

Bigger back - Replacement for Williams.

Football strategy is so confusing these days.
 

Can't tell if he is faster or more athletic than Rodrick or not. Thoughts? Not that he necessarily won't be but if he isn't better than what Rodrick was I don't see the point of bringing him in considering how sparingly we used Williams last year. Smith and Brooks will be only be better plus JFC and Johannesson are also 220+ pounders and will be second year guys.

Never to many solid RB due to injuries, ect.

JJ and JFC aren't ready to play just yet. We need a 3rd back in case Smith or Brooks get injured. Plus he's an upperclassmen.

I get the feeling you are correct. On a related note, I think we need to get Bobby Boucher to talk to our D-line.

Physically, facially and stylistically he looks like DC27's (hat tip) meaner, older brother. And this wouldn't be far from the truth as he will be 22 this coming season.

IMO he is a nice add; hard to tell much from that hudl as he was running through Wisconsin-size holes; looks to have size, decent speed, power so probably will get some haul around the goal line and other need situations. Really loving this stable of distinct backs.

Despite the grades issues coming out of HS he seems to have had some early interest from big programs. Of interest to probably only me is the offer from Mike Bobo at CSU. Seems to me Georgia's longtime former OC probably knows a good back when he sees one.

Having LT talk to young people about staying off drugs is a bit like Heidi Fleiss talking to young girls about remaining abstinent.
 


This one is puzzling to me. Why would they want a JUCO back who rushed for just barely over 1,000 yards against nowhere near Big Ten quality sophomores and freshman when you have two freshman backs who played almost every down last year? Not to mention they have two more running backs who redshirted last year. It would be one thing if the guy had some big time interest, but beating out Idaho is no reason for celebration.

Balance the roster is the reason. We will now have one Jr., 2 So. 2 Fr(R). Five running backs is not a big number. We could easily be down to 2 or 3 by the end of the season due to injuries, ect. Hope we can sign at least one more freshman RB to red shirt. The lose of Jeff Jones
for what ever reason didn't help with balance at this position. Looks like a good signing to me.

My guess is depth and to try and even out the classes some. It wouldn't be good if they go into next season with just four scholarship RBs. With how careful they are with concussions and other injuries now days, it is easy to be down to your 3rd or 4th string guy. Could also be that they don't think Femi-Cole and Johannesson are ready yet.

He rushed for 1200 yards at 5.3 yards per carry (108 yards per game). Yeah, that's pretty awful. Why would we want him? /sarcasm

It would be nice not to have everyone back there to buy .5 more seconds to Mitch.... really nice.

Part of not using Williams may have been his propensity for doing things incorrectly (like fumbling)

We already have goods and depth. Idk, can he play mlb?

I don't really think we have depth. There are currently only 4 running backs on the roster - 2 freshman and 2 sophomores (next season). A couple of injuries and we're in trouble. Taking a proven runner (see my post above for the actual stats) that will be a junior can't hurt. I am a huge Shannon Brooks and Rodney Smith fan so I'm not saying Kobe would take time from them, but what if there are injuries?
 

My big question, and perhaps why they brought him in, is can he pick up the blitz? Huge and underrated part of some guys games
