Knowning what you know now, would you trade Pitino for Shaka?

as of right now, i mean if the season started today or in a few days its nice having pitino over tubby because of Rakeem Buckles(assuming he plays this year) and malik smith, now i would have preferred coleman over smith but having both smith and buckles is better then coleman, we just filled a HUGE gap at PF with this hire that we wouldnt have had with tubby, that is short term just for this season, not longterm, but Pitino did make an improvement to the roster for this years team that we would have not have happened if tubby was still there, and in the long term we will just have to wait and see and i am definitely looking way to far ahead but in the year 2017 a lineup of
PG:Newton(junior)
SG:Whitehead(senior)
SF:Amir Coffey(sophmore)
PF:Henry ellenson(junior
C: reid(senior)

with alex illikainen(junior and Macura(senior) and Jarvis(junior)coming off the bench, obvioulsy that is a gigantic IF but it is fun to dream about, i think i would take Richard over Rick Pitino or any other coach in the nation if he can mustard the above lineup

Don't go there. Time to move on.

Can we factor in that Pitino is probably making less than half of what we would have had to pay Shaka?

That may be a good point. Now, can we get Gopher Warrior to find out exactly what Coach Pitino's contract is?

And what did Shaka's first contract at VCU pay?

Even Tim Miles at Nebraska climbed the salary ladder.

Well, as long as you guys insist on debating the desirablity of impossible scenarios, you might want to pit Ray Williams against John Wooden.

ru havin' fun with your mental mastribation?

Is that as much fun as physical masturbation?

I know it's a bit off topic, but some are making a good point regarding the fact we really don't know what we have yet. He has brought in a few guys that will help & he, and the staff's effort has been astounding. If Buckles arrives I would give him high marks for what he has been able to accomplish in a short period of time. Reading the question & replies made me think "What could we compare him to?" Comparing to Tubby make people crazy & defensive with their view/attitude/allegiance to the former coach. So, How about we look at how he compares to the last young coach we had high hopes for.... Dan Monson. I know Monson's era was different with the restrictions after the scandal, but the difference in energy, recruiting contacts, buzz around the program and interest from high major recruits - it's not even close - IMHO. That is what has me so optimistic about our future. I expected Tubby to do these types of things when he came in, but that just did not happen.

Holy crap, Pitino DID do a great job! I still look at that 2017 banner and get choked up every time I walk into the Barn. Oh the memories!

Howieramone -- why such a high level of angst every time somebody makes a negative comment toward your guy Orlando? I think it is fair to come to different conclusions about the effectiveness of Tubby as a coach/recruiter/whatever and this site might be slanted too much to the negative in that regard, but the coaching regimes don't exist in a vacuum. It is a reasonable debate to compare one coaching tenure against another. It's ridiculous to suggest that Pitino is a more successful coach than Tubby was here at Minnesota at this point in time. Time will tell. But it is completely reasonable to evaluate what you liked or didn't like about the last coach. It's definitely part of the story.

Howie, Parski, and I will stop making positive comments about Tubby as soon as the rest of you stop making negative comments about Tubby. Deal?

Truthfully, I have mixed feelings about Tubby. I agree with some of the positive comments that I read from the three of you and some of the negative comments I read from others. What I don't understand is the sentiment to just flat out ignore what happened. In sports, you will always compare Michael vs Lebron, Tubby vs Rich, Rich vs Shaka. Whatever. It's normal and shouldn't be considered offensive if you don't agree with the content that somebody else is offering.

I would agree with you if they were constructive criticisms, but the overwhelming majority of them are childish garbage along the lines of "Tubby sux", or "LOL" when Tubby offers someone Minnesota is recruiting, and so on. The way this fanbase turns venomous and spiteful on former coaches (especially someone like Tubby who led the school's best season in 23 years and is a well-respected and upstanding man and coach) is disgusting. It's always tinged with an undercurrent of "this piece of sh!t dared not to lead us to multiple national championships, so I will spit on his grave at every opportunity", and I for one will not stand for it. He's just the latest in a long line of Gopher coaches in both football and basketball to fail to live up to the fanbase's expectations. BFD.

Right on, 18. After all, if we did not have PC's here on GH, I would be unemployed as the Supervisor of Officials.

I know you don't speak for Parski, but does that mean this can stop:

Gophers sign Rashad Vaughn!

Tubby would have signed LeBron and Kobe and MJ and gotten them all eligible - stupid Pitino, bring back Tubby *angry face*

As a Gopher fan, I am now a Pitino fan and will treat him the exact same way I treated Tubby. And just as I was irritated to all heck when people built up Monson for the sake of bashing Tubby, ill be equally as upset at people building up Tubby just for the sake of diminishing Pitino.

Do agree though, the unnecessary complaining about Tubby is just as annoying.

I'm so happy we signed Rashad! This never would have happened under that loser Tubby!

Equally irritating.

Pitino poll

No way to judge. Hasn't coached a game yet, hasn't signed a high profile name yet. Too early to tell. I do love what I have seen so far and what we are hearing from many top recruits. Has to land them though.

If his name was Richard Peterson with the same resume--Woody would not have spent a nano second on him!!

It must be noted that Tubby elevated the program initially and had a highly regarded recruiting class early on, and things were looking way up. The trick is maintaining the momentum and realizing the team's potential, which did not occur. Almost identical situation with Monson, who seemed to coach his first team up and secured the Rickert/Holman/Hargrow/Robinson class right off. Again, things looked way up at that point. With Pitino there's definitely reason for hope and even optimism, especially considering how he made a radio out of a coconut last year at FIU. That said, Monson was coming off a Final 8 appearance himself, so there are never any guarantees as to how things will translate to the bigger stage.

At the same time, I do not understand the mindset that success is impossible at Minnesota. I feel that represents a lack of imagination as well as limited intellectual and analytical capability. History shows that it just takes the right person to get the ball rolling. At this point, I don't know how anyone can be displeased with Pitino's efforts and apparent abilities. This still strikes me as the best hire available to us.

Is there a way to block a word on Gopherhole? My first nomination is Tubby.

Since the coaching move, there have been many positive changes on the board. A number of posters I was not familiar with, have brought additional skills in statistical analysis and many go see our new recruits and report back to us. I would like to see us all embrace the future of Gopher Basketball and not bring up past wounds.

If Shaka had taken the job we would all be going nuts over him, his every tweet and interview lauded as a harbinger of future trips to the Final Four. We would be warning Bo, Tom, Tom, John, Matt et. al. that Shaka Ball was coming to the B1G, forever altering how the game is played in these parts. He would bring in late season recruits who no one else wanted and we would pronounce them an immediate upgrade over the predecessor's players. Richard Pitino would remain in obscurity, outside of our collective consciousness other than as the son of a top coach.

You don't think that is part of the reason he was hired?

Not the name per se. However he wouldn't have the same resume if there weren't the family connection, so it becomes a trick question.
