Not that we could have gotten Shaka anyways, but I'm curious to know who would still rather have Shaka than Pitino right now. I personally am so happy with the way Pitino has recruited, put together an amazing staff, and represented the University that I wouldn't trade him for Shaka if given the chance. I realize that may sound crazy, but I'm curious to know if anyone shares my sentiment.

I was going to make this a poll, but I couldn't figure it out.

No he hasn't coached a game nor does he have a commitment. Hopefully in a couple years we can say that but not now.

As my grandmother used to say: "If Ifs and Buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas."

In other words - unless you have Doc Brown's Delorean and can go back in time, you can't change what has already happened. You have two choices - you can p*** and moan about what might have been, or you can look forward.

Rich Pitino is the Gophers Coach. There is no way to compare what he will do with what Smart might have done.

I suppose in some alternative timeline, Smart could have taken the Gophers job, recruited 15 5-star players and won 5 straight national titles.
BUT WE'LL NEVER KNOW!

A little early to tell but I'm sure some would prefer Flip.

Interesting idea, but I think you'd have to wait until at least a year from now to get an actual answer. Right now, despite being happy with the positive vibes and start our staff has gotten, they've not coached a game. No chance you could say "yes" to this over a coach like Shaka, with demonstrated success.

In a year, once we've seen some games and landed (or failed to land) some recruits, then there will be data with which to actually answer...

It's the classic bird in the hand versus two in the bush proposition. We know what Shaka is capable of, and Pitino is still a mostly unknown commodity. I think the tie breaker it's who wanted to be here more, which is Rich.

I define recruited by who shows up on campus not who he has offered, he has not coached a game here yet...henceforth very little has been revealed. Give him an A for effort.

I had the same thought last night. Would we take Shaka over Coach P? That the U. couldn't attract the coaches from VCU or Butler, would have been unheard of 10-15 short years ago.

That said, I'd take Coach P. over Shaka.

I Know What Many of You All Are Sayin'

But, I'll still take coach Pitino over Shaka for many reasons.

1. He's here and says he wants to be.
2. He talks honest and he works hard. He's done a nice job with the incoming guys on a very short timetable.
3. He's got a positive attitude. He doesn't whine about what he doesn't have.
4. The connection to Donovan and his dad is powerful in many ways.
5. His youth, his vision, his confidence, his ability to ignore what he doesn't know
all lead to optimism he is going to build something here.

Would Shaka have us this excited? Dunno, don't care. Don't think so but he's not here.
Would Flip have been better? Maybe....lol...but he ain't here either.

I like Pitino very much...right now. ha

This thread makes no sense.....so what do we even know now to compare???

Then why comment???

I would take Pitino over anyone right now. Based on inspiring Big Mo to shed the pounds. Tubby kept him tubby. Also like the staff, how hard they are working, the recruits (he does have commits, from King etc.

So..... given the chance would you take Shaka or Pitino tomorrow?

No way to judge. Hasn't coached a game yet, hasn't signed a high profile name yet. Too early to tell. I do love what I have seen so far and what we are hearing from many top recruits. Has to land them though.

It's an easy concept. Given what you know now would you take P or Smart?!?

I guess I wouldn't want a trade but if one were to happen I wouldn't exactly be crying either.

Anyone? Seriously??

Inspired? Probably threatened Mo that he wouldn't play at all unless he shed weight. I am glad Pitino did it, and maybe threatening is inspiring.

Pitino is going to do great things here, I'd roll the dice with him over Shaka if it was a gun to the head question. His drive and work ethic are very impressive, and he clearly has no problem recruiting the top talent in the country. Seeing a young, energetic staff that is going to press and get up and down the floor is going to be a sight for sore eyes around here.

I can't remember the last time I was this excited for Gophers basketball.

This is pretty much how I feel and why I made the thread, I was curious if anyone else felt this way. It's obviously extremely early, but after only a few months I'm pretty sold on the hire. I may be naive but I also think Pitino is more likely to stay here long term than someone like Shaka would. Pitino genuinely seems to want to build a powerhouse here, but again I may just be naive, we'll see.
