Not well thought out, just my kneejerk reactions after a few beers...

Coaching:

* "Meet the new boss...same as the old boss"...The team is no more "well coached" under Kill than Brewster. I don't expect Kill to turn water into wine talent-wise but the shooting ourselves in the foot with penalties routine was supposed to disappear when Brew left town. This season has been offsides, offsides, offsides, 5 men in the backfield, 5 men in the backfield, illegal hands to the face, illegal hands to the face, crazy time out after crazy time out, lame duck 3rd/4th down call after lame duck 3rd/4th down call....What exactly is the difference in coaching staffs at this point?

Offense:

* I'm not ready to abandon M Gray or switch him to WR, but we need to admit that if we need 8 yds or more from a passing play he looks like he's swinging blindfolded on a pinata. So long as we're coming from behind (which will be a lot) he's in trouble and Shorty will get snaps. Forget the controversy/arguments/allegiances, all I need to know is that in the 4th Q, with the game on the line the coaches subbed Shortell for Gray....again. Regardless of the outcome, the coaches are sending a damn loud message and it's not some racist, fan conspiracy against Gray.

* Shortell is not an instant solution & he's obviously not as athletic as Gray but the fans are finding out what the players & coaches have known for a while now...he's got a handle on the game & is a more polished QB than Gray. I watched him line up confused players into the right spots tonight from the line of scrimmage as he was callning the plays & we never seem to have any penalties when he's in the game. Not saying he should start!!!!! Just pointing out he's got a "calm" & "Poise" about him that Gray is still working on.

* Bennet looked good early. Is a shifty, but situational back & why hasn't he caught a damn pss out of the backfield yet this season?

* Kirkwood runs strong, looks good.

* Why did we burn the red shoit on Cobb for one carry? We couldn't have used Edwards or Wright for ONE FRICKIN CARRY?

* Lair is booby soft. He's good for a couple catches a game but he's an oversized flanker, not a TE & certainly not an H-Back.

* McKnight is a second tier star. Uber-talented, but lazy blocking, lazy coming back to the ball, lazy to the ball if it's not right to him. Talent will get him to the league but he'd better find the "eye of the tiger" or he won't last long.

* Moulton's got talent & balls.

* The OL is weak sauce. Wynn, Orton, Bunders sucked 3 years ago & they still suck. Olson & Gjere are talented, but are underwhelming so far.

Defense:

* DL...I was frustrated Kill couldn't hold on to Jewhan (sp?) Edwards, but I understood a leader has to cut the dead weight if they're not buying in. That said we sure could use him right now.

* Anthony Jacobs has been invisible for about 6 years now.

* At least I don't have to listen to people pimp Kirksey anymore.

* Our DE's...we might as well run a 2-5-4.

* Tinsley's good.

* Stoudermire...he's the Lawrence Westbrook of the defense. i.e. Good, but not nearly as good as he thinks he is. He may as well have curled up in the fetal position and sucked his thumb on the 57 yd pass right before half time.
He got juked out of his frickin socks! he also came charging in at least one other time and completely missed the receiver who turned up-field for a big 1st down. Now I hear he's got a broken arm so it's not his fault...well if you're injured get the hell out of the game, if you're just hurt then play & make plays.

* Vereen is what he is. Talented but young & inconsistent.

* Royston...the bright spot. Well, he and Tinsley to be fair. I get frustrated with Royston because I see him grab guys after 13 yards, then I remember he's making about 3 TD saving tackles a game & about 2 critical pass breakups a game & remember we'd be giving up 50+ a game without him.

The coach can tell players to line up in the proper place, but that doesn't mean they will do it.

He did one of our first plays was a slip-screen.

Agree.

Good analysis for the most part. I agree about Shortell - he has qualities that you need in a QB. The team just plays more under control when he comes in the game. It's a smaller sample size, but I have been impressed.

I can't argue with any of this delicious beer fed report. It's time for Epping and T. Olson to start and make guys like Wynn re-earn their spot. Our lineman on both sides of the ball are atrocious. Hell... we've lost the battle at every position against every single team we've played. I spent the last 3 minutes trying to think of one spot we out played the other team at, I simply can't do it. Even the other team's kicker out-shined Hawthorne.

BUT!

Let's not jump off the Jerry Kill ship just yet, Brewster didn't recruit for any particular type of offense or defense, he has such a mix of different players i'm sure Kill hasn't clue one what or where to play some of them in his system, a system he's been using for the better part of what? 15 years?.. The area where Kill has over Brew, is he has a system. This was posted some time ago and it's just something to think about...

We have some time for J. Kill to un**** what Brew left this program and get it in HIS direction, with HIS disciplined/recruited players.
(I also think there is a fair share of players who still wanted the laid-back Horton to be coach and they don't like the 'drill sergeant'...'hard work' type)

And of course, it must be noted that we are NOT saying that just because other coaches have done well after winning few games in year one that this will be true with Kill. What is being said is that just because the team is going badly this year doesn't mean that the Kill era will turn out badly.

100%. Not saying Kill's the wrong guy. Just saying right now...it looks like Brew's still at the reigns on the sidelines.

The players have been coached not to line up offsides since pee wee football. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. You can attempt to instill discipline, but you can't actually make players have discipline.

Agree on the stupid penalties. I was hoping I wouldn't have to resort to my old habit of having to scan the entire field for a flag whenever we make a good play. But, alas, same old same old.

Kill has done nothing to separate himself from Brewster so far. Nothing.

How can the defensive line be as bad as they are, this is against an FBS team, they were completely dominated. I can see it against Ohio State but NDSU. This team is not going to win another game.

My biggest problem with the line was how often they were breaking contain and getting out of position. It's like they were so desperate to get to the QB they were just running up the field like bulls in a china shop regardless of situation.

Didn't he try to play and make plays? He couldn't, which is why he was pulled out of the game. This is football, it's not cut and dry as you are trying to make it. It's like you never played a down of the sport before.
