per Andrew:

Kirk Herbstreit applauds Minnesota's aggressive extension of P.J. Fleck and likes their chances of retaining Fleck for years.

In his third season, Fleck has already led Minnesota to their first 10-win regular season in more than a century and has them one win away from their first-ever division title and Big Ten Championship appearance. He was given one-year extensions in both 2017 and 2018 before signing an extension earlier this season that bumped his salary and buyout.

Even with the new deal and $10-million buyout (which drops to $5 million after next season), can Minnesota hang onto Fleck? Herbstreit discussed that on the High Motor podcast:

Go Gophers!!

According to his agent he wants to establish something great here and put down roots

My MONEY says he will be staying in MN for a while :drink: On Saturdays game, THE BALL is the program.. " HANG ON TO IT " Beat Wisconsin Go Golden Gophers

Once a Big Ten team is playing for championships and in the media spotlight it’s already the top of college football.

There’s better natural recruiting territories than Minnesota but most of the other downsides of the job are fixed by winning.

The next challenge for Fleck will be to see if he can get a reputation of putting a lot of players into the NFL.

That's going to be the only way, that I can think of at least, to have any kind of chance at getting 4* and 5* kids (who will largely be from outside, often far outside, the north central US) to be willing to come here.

Otherwise, sure Fleck is cool and Minnesota winning is cool, but why would a 5* come here over Alabama, Clemson, Ohio St, etc? Right now, there still isn't that reason.

watching him hand out turkeys the other night looks like he has roots now. its no secret his wife loves it here and lets be honest other than the 8 months of winter the twin cities is a special place to live. I keep hearing notre dame not sure south bend is utopia

The Gophers have to retain Fleck, no matter what. His salary is peanuts compared to the cost of a new stadium and athletic facility.

Let's not be Penny Wise and Pound Foolish (Ben Franklin).
