Kirk Ciarocca a Possibility for the Texas OC job

Valid concern.
its called practice. cant stick to the same old same old if the other team is pounding you. you must adjust. a few tight end passes, roll outs, mis direction reverses, fake reverses....something to make the defense think and not be able to just send the army each and every play... we made major progress this year , the best i can remember.... i am completly a gopher football junky... but to take the next step we have to have some creativity to give different looks... loosen up the defense.

Surprised at how many of you don’t think losing Kirk would be a big deal. For all of Fleck’s strengths, he is not an X&O coach. While not perfect, Kirk has proven to be an excellent coordinator and we are fortunate to have him.

I think Kirk is the most valuable assistant coach we have. (Rossi would be easier to replace). I'm not sure if we have a coach in waiting for the job. Eventually, it could be Callahan or Burns, maybe Simon.

Agreed

Listened to PJ and an Outback Bowl preview interview. One of the topics was the DL coach going to Rutgers. He again emphasized wanting to see his coaches move forward and be a person that helps people catch their dream. He also said having the coordinators in place is the most important piece.

but we were about 4-5 plays away from that being a completely different game.

As for the Iowa game, I really wish KC would have stopped calling those plays where the WR drops the ball. They never work.
Of course. Brilliant analysis.

After all, a 1920's Wishbone offense would lead the nation in yards per game ... *IF* our players would simply choose to succeed on every play! Those dummys

Probably moreso from a consistency standpoint.

Hence, even if KC left, I'm sure Fleck would install someone to run the same philosophy/scheme. Fleck clearly thinks it's a winning recipe in the Big Ten. He's married to it, and we're married to him. So it's what we've got.

Let's hope going forward that we always have Morgan/Bateman level playmaking through the air to bail us out when the rest of our offense doesn't work.

Expect every team from now on to play us like Wisconsin did. If we can make the tremendous air plays, then we win. If we can't, as we couldn't in that game, we lose.

Losing KC would suck, especially if it was a lateral move to another OC job. If he leaves as some point to be a head coach so be it. Hopefully he sticks around here for a long time though because coordinator stability is a big help in building up a program.

The top programs are constantly shuffling coordinators. Seems to work out just fine for them.

This seems to be somewhat true. Top programs do usually lose coordinators to be head coaches at other programs.

I think what is more key than consistency at the coordinator position itself, is consistency in the scheme/playbook/terminology.

It can be someone else calling the plays. As long as the kids can keep banking what they learn, and not have to learn a completely new system ... that can still be consistency.

Simon added the title “Passing Game Coordinator” this year, which leads me to believe he’s being groomed to be KC’s replacement some day. I agree that maintaining the current system is important. It’s not going to be like the Brewster days.

If you don’t think Fleck is a good Xs and Os coach you’re fooling yourself

We would miss Kirk C if he left, but the offense would still be sound. No doubt in my mind.

Some guy:

My comment was based on the fact he’s never been a coordinator or play caller, and has been referred to many times from many sources as a “CEO-type” coach. I’ve taken that to mean Fleck leaves a lot of the minutiae of coaching to his coordinators, even if he generally knows he wants a RPO system.

First sign of any change would involve not going to Tampa. Doubt this will occur. Some reassurance can come from seeing him in the booth on Wednesday.

He's said as much himself. Which you know.

Are you really complaining about being married to an offense that just produced the best season in generations?

Any team's offense can be instantly improved; just throw to the tight end more often.

Did you know the tight end is almost always wide open near the goal line? Fun fact!

Also, if the tight end is tall (and most of them are quite tall), just throw the ball high and let him jump up and catch it. It's virtually unstoppable!

He never said he wasn’t a good Xs and Os coach
He said he lets his assistant coaches coach

two totally different things.

If it is so clear and public that he said he wasn’t a good Xs and Os coach you’ll easily be able to find one article or video in which he is quoted as saying that

For sure he leaves it to his assistants

but if you really think he is just hiring an RPO guy and then being uninvolved you’re fooling yourself

Ciarrocca is a really good OC. But he’s probably not going to be here for the next 5 years. The good thing is we have a talented bench with Burns, Simon and Patterson and should likely be able to promote from within.

Greder just sent out a tweet that Kirk is headed to Penn State to be the OC.

Well this sucks.

My guess is that Clay Patterson is our next offensive coordinator.
