There was a letter in the Sports section of the Strib this morning that called out Kill for screaming at officials. Did anyone else see this? A Gopher season ticket holder from Edina basically said that Kill needs to refrain from screaming at officials when he doesn't agree with a call and act more like Leslie Frazier, in order to set a better example for the young men that he's teaching. Sorry sir, but college and pro sports don't work that way any more. Nowadays, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Was the letter from AJ Barker's mom's BFF ?

A StarTrib E-mailer/Comments Section guy got it wrong? Go figure. Maybe you did to Breakin', at least a little. Kill as pictured, wasn't screaming about a bad call, he was screaming at the Refs to start making some calls. He saw that the game was getting way to chippy, full of cheap shots and getting out of hand. He wanted the Refs to take control of the game and stop things from getting out of hand.

Not sure if he wanted the Gophers moved from mid-field to the shadow of their Goal Line, but still..

That apparently, was way to esoteric for that elderly Edina resident.

I can't believe a head coach would yell at refs to help try protect his players and win the game in an extremely chippy game.

Plus, NFL and college players are exactly the same, therefore you should coach them the same. Just like a 4th grade teacher should teach the same as a 10th grade teacher.

Please tell me I am just missing the sarcasm here.

Yes, I was being sarcastic. Coaching in the NFL is not the same as coaching in college. Just like teaching 4th graders isn't the same as teaching 10th graders.

Whoever wrote that needs to call up Ruesse and set up a circle jerk. He said the same thing. Knit picking is what it is.

No story here. Just someone writing a letter to the editor. If there is really anything to comment on here it is that the Strib even printed it.

In college, you see coaches get on officials all the time, most of the time it's deserved. In the Pros it's different, one big difference is that the refs can call 'Unsportsmanlike Conduct' on the coach, a 15 yard penalty penalty, makes a big difference. It's been years since I've seen it called but it's available.

That guy needs to beg his wife for his balls back. He needs them badly

Here is the letter:

I HAVE BEEN A GOPHER SEASON TICKET HOLDER FOR OVER 40 YEARS. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE LESS OF THE UNDISCIPLINED BEHAVIOR EXHIBITED BY COACH JERRY KILL ON THE SIDELINES WHEN

HE REACTS TO AN UNFAVORABLE CALL. SEE THE PICTURE ON THE FRONT PAGE OF LAST SUNDAY'S SPORT PAGE FOR AN EXAMPLE. COACH KILL SHOULD LOOK TO LESLIE FRAZIER OF THE VIKINGS FOR AN EXAMPLE OF THE SIDELINE BEHAVIOR TO MODEL FOR THE YOUNG MEN HE IS SUPPOSED TO COACH AND TEACH.

Boy, this guy with a different opinion about Coach Kill really gets me steamed. What a sackless loser he must be.

Let's see who keeps his job longer. Mild mannered Frazier, or the smokin "Jayhawk" Kill?

People are ripping this guy for having a different opinion of Coach Kill, they are ripping him for thinking that a college coach shouldn't yell on the sidelines. It's an absolutely terrible take, Coach Kill aside.

Should we make a running list of the successful and quality college coaches who go nuts on the sidelines?

I'll start.....Tom Izzo

I think they're both sitting pretty right now. I wasn't a big fan of Frazier, but he did a nice job this year and the biggest criticism about him (sticking with Ponder too long) was sort of proven right last night when we all got to see Webb play.

Both of them are in good standing right now.

The thing that bugs me about this the most is that the Strib goes ahead and prints things like this for people to read and form an opinion without ever knowing the facts or circumstances related to the antics.

Um, you do know letters to the editor are often picked to get a reaction? A person influenced by this letter is clueless about the Gophers anyway or is already anti-sports. Not worth getting excited about.

There can be unsportsmanlike call in all levels of play.

It just looks worse because Kill turns bright red. Some coaches are tellers and some are not.

This is coming from the same fan base that universally reviles Bo Ryan for his sideline antics and spent a lot of time complaining about Tom Izzo for getting after Ted Valentine in the Barn (not to mention the student section's take on the whole ordeal). But when a guy thinks Kill should tone it down, he has no nuts and knows nothing about big time sports.

I disagree with this guy's take too, but does this really deserve a thread to rip a guy for staying stuff we've all said about opposing coaches on the sideline? But I am glad I took the under on 8.5 posts until somebody mentioned Reusse in this thread.

I don't mind Kill on the sidelines when he gets all fired up at all. The students love it, too. The only thing that gives me pause is whether it contributes to him potentially having a seizure when he does get that mad. Otherwise, it's great.

Yep, people who are annoyed with Bo Ryan should be annoyed when Kill does the same thing. I think the annoyance with Ted Valentine was that it lasted so long, a coach arguing a call shouldn't stop the game for that long, but that's on Valentine, not Izzo.

However, it's a dumb take in general. It's essentially like writing in and saying that you think Kill should always wear a sweatervest on the sidelines, it's dumb.

The mention of Reusse, eh, it's logical. He's full of atrocious takes so it makes sense to use him as a reference. If I trying to use a reference for a good college football coach, I'll bring up Saban. If I am making reference to a bad injury, i'll talk about Theisman. If I want to reference an out of touch moron making a bad take, Reusse seems to fit the bill.

Bo Ryan is reviled because of his antics on almost each and every play. The foul on his player could be ridiculously obvious, and there sits Bo Ryan looking at the ref like he was in Van Gogh's "Scream". If coaches want to bitch and moan about bad calls, fine. The thing most of us have against Bo Ryan is that he attempts to completely manipulate the refs; and the fact that it works drives us crazy.

There is nothing wrong with a person expecting civility out of a public figure. Does Kills sideline antics bother me? Absolutely not, but I can't criticize someone else if it does.

Question for those who believe it's okay. Is it okay if his players behave in the same fashion? Maybe that explains why he didn't go off the o-lineman who lost control and received the penalties in the first half?

No it wouldn't be okay and if Kill was challenging a call he would have looked more like an idiot than like an "aggrieved" party also. Tried to address that early in the thread:

I had a coach who repeatedly told us: "I don't want to see any of you saying one goddamn word to an official. Ever. That's my job."
