Kill's on the hot seat right now on his KFAN radio show if you want to tune in

Norwood T. has showed-up on ESPN 1500 morning show, KFAN yesterday and according to Gopher Lady, was just on KFAN again today. All to defend the UNC decision. He's not going through all that because of a few people on Gopher Hole.

Nope. He and Kill are finding out the hard way how much of a PR mess this has turned into.

UNC is on their third coach in three years. He would get them at home during his 4th year.

Yep. As I said in the other thread, I'm willing to give Kill the benefit of the doubt in the long run, but next year is Kill's third year with the team and 2014 would be his fourth.

So, three and then four years into the Kill era, he doesn't think the Gophers will be good enough to compete with a middling ACC team? The long-range plan is such that we're going to need that extra cupcake in 2014 to be bowl eligible--as in four cupcakes and two conference wins to get to a bowl?

To me, that's disappointing.

What NT & JK should have said...

A critical part of our strategy is to play annually in bowl games. It is important for three reasons. First, it is fun, both for our players and for our fans. Second, it is appealing to recruits. Finally, it offers and opportunity to further develop the players in the program through bowl preparation practices.

In 2011, Minnesota was favored in only x? games. Before the 2012 season began, we could be expected to be favored in x? of our games. To put ourself in a position to achieve our goals, we believe that as we begin each season, we'd like to be considered the favorite in at least half of the games on our schedule.

Our annual schedule will always include Michigan, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Northwestern, and will on average, include either Ohio State, Penn State, or occasionally both. All of these teams have either a winning conference record over the last 15 years or have won multiple conference championships in that period. We aspire to be in thier midst on an annual basis - this is the plan.

I believe that you schedule with the team that you have, not the team that you'd like to have or aspire to be. This change aligns with that strategy. The move comes with a cost. It is not uncommon when building a program to make short term sacrifices in favor of long term gains. We see this on the field in the form of playing younger players and resisting the urge to remove the redshirts from our true freshman. This is such a sacrifice.

Coach Kill has a strong record for turning around struggling programs. He has an exacting view of what it takes to get the job done. I trust his judgment and I'm going to support him any way I can to help us achieve our goals.

Thanks & Go Gophers

If he'd said that, I think I'd have understood. Instead he seemed like he was apologizing the whole time.

Exactly!!!!

How many fans even knew that UNC was on the schedule? I am not even sure why this is news. A few people have stated that this will upset the average fan. We don't need fans that are average.

Go Gophers !!!!!!!!!!

If he had said that it would still be the same B.S. as it is coming from you. Must recruits would rather play USC in a nationally televised ESPN non-conference game than a 2nd rate opponent in a 3rd rate bowl game in a 4th rate city that nobody is going to watch but the fans of the team. You wasted a huge amount of time on that post.

Gee thanks.

It's really simple. UNC isn't very good --- and we paid to get out of those two games. If Kill wants to schedule patsies for the foreseeable future, that's fine. But paying to get out of playing an average ACC team is just silly. People trying to spin this otherwise are dead wrong. Is it the worst thing in the world? No.

The veneer finally came off the coach this week. Now he performs on his own merit and not what his supporters or detractors tell us. Now, that to me is a refreshing outcome of a lousy week.

Kill lunch show- he was spittin mad that this move is being questioned. at one point it appeared he was going to say you can take your loser program and choke on it.
2 things:
1. The furor proves to Jerry that there is fire in the fan base. this is a good thing
2. 45 years of crap requires a lot of shoveling. rules say we can only use an 8in X 8in spade. Bobcat removal rule was discarded back in 93 after WI did it.

What was the "Bobcat removal rule" that was changed?

What was the "Bobcat removal rule" that was changed?

I assume he's referring to basically showing a ton of players out the door without any APR ramifications coming back to bite you. Kill couldn't do that, but Alvarez kinda did back when he was getting Sconny on the map.

+1

So...what's worse...getting out of a home and home series with UNC for $800,000 or Nebraska paying Arkansas State $1 million dollars to come play a game in Lincoln?

The clamor going on about getting out of the UNC game while gaining money for another home game at TCF field seems to be misplaced. In the end the U of MN won't be taking a loss in revenue. However, do the Gophers ever pay $1 million dollars for a scrub team to come to TCF field? All things considered it seems that the Gophers have simply improved their scheduling situation.

Apples am oranges. Nebraska is going to sell that game out and they will make a lot of money. If we paid nmsu a million tcf will be half full and we might break even in the end. It's over and done with, I'm annoyed like everyone else, I just want everything to work out cause I don't want a new coaching staff in 2-3 yrs and starting this *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# all over again. Stability and wins is all I want

You nailed it, there is no comparison. With their passionate fan base they will pack the stadium no matter who the opponent is so the department can afford to shell out big bucks to bring someone in. I mean what else are people going to do on a Saturday in the fall in Lincoln Nebraska?
