Listening to Sports huddle. Glass half empty today

Jerry is a good team psychologist.

He knows what mood to strike in public after a tough win or loss.

It's all tactical.

He like most other Gopher fans. I am sure he is thinking how is this offense going to beat WI, Neb, Iowa, Mich, OSU and NW who all looked very good yesterday. Without improvement 2-6 is very possible and that will be 3 steps back for this program

That is Jerry in a nutshell. When he says something in these situations "He knows what mood to strike in public after a tough win or loss." per Studwell55. He has always been that way and he probably always will be.

As I recall that's what a lot of people here were feeling after the TCU game last year. Personally, the offensive line play and its injuries is the most concerning to me. I wouldn't be surprised if they burn one or two OL redshirts over the next to games to get some more depth and experience.

We had issues with the offense at this time last year as well. And that was with Cobb and Williams.

I'm concerned but still believe they will find a way to get some better production out of this offense. We saw it last year.

Yes, that thought has to be in every dedicated fan's mind after yesterday. Unfortunately, some of the weaker repeat opponents from last year (like Illinois, NW, and Michigan) look much, much better this year. Iowa may also be significantly better. I believe improvement will come, though, and it starts with a healthy and fully functioning offensive line. The defense is already good enough for the conference challenges.

EXCELLENT observation, Killjoy. I was recalling feeling a lot of concern for the remainder of the 2014 season following the Gopher loss to TCU in Texas last year. In the following weeks, the offensive line started to establish the RUN game. The next two games may be very healing, confidence building and "season changing" games for the offensive line. As the offensive line goes...so will go the Gopher offense to find ways to support the kicking game, special teams play and defense. IF the Gopher can rush for 250 yards or more in each of the next two games...AND get wins...the ooc portion of the schedule will have been a GREAT success. Win the JUG, the PIG and the AXE in 2015 Gopher!

I believe you are entirely correct on all of your observations cjbfbp....

IMHO, OL redshirts will burn this season. There is a plus/minus argument to this. You play linemen now who will benefit from a year of S&C. On the other side of the coin, you'll have that more experienced linemen to bridge the gap for those graduating next season.

I can see the Gophers taking two additional OL commitments. We can never have enough OL backups. How many OL injuries do we have after two games?

As he should. The defense is great. The offense is anemic. The best looking player shouldn't be a redshirt freshman (Rodney Smith). Props to Wolitarsky and Maye. They both had solid games. Throw in Carter and Still........I'm not nearly as concerned about our WR situation as I was this summer. The O-line simply hasn't been good. Leidner is still inaccurate. 1-1 is where I thought we'd be through two games......but if the offense continues to look like this.......we'll be a worse team than last year.

I think you also have to consider who these teams have played. We've played TCU and a Colorado State squad that will probably finish with 8 or 9 wins. I llinois beat a bad Kent State team and a Western Illinois who will be near the rear of the MVC. They have been tested on either side of the ball yet, but they will been hit in the mouth quite a few times by the time face them, plus it's in November and bringing a pass heavy offense to the Bank that time of year is a hard task. Northwestern I believe they're improved, I think Stanford was overrated, but it was still a nice win and a great performance by their defense. Justin Jackson will probably give our front seven fits, but every year no matter the record we always seem to play close games with Northwestern, it'll probably be another grind it out type of day where the team that wins the field position and turnover battle wins the game. Michigan looks better, but Oregon State was a mess on offense yesterday. Anderson's gonna need some time with that program, I think Mike Reilly got out of there just in front of the firing squad. Anyways Michigan still has the same qb issues, we get them at home and if we do what we do well, will get them in the passing situations they don't want to be in. Nebraska showed the same warts vs BYU that they did last year. Our secondary matches up well vs them and they can't stop the run

Cal Stoll never worried about his O-line. He always knew that at Minnesota, you always have your line after three weeks.

@billbarnwell: Remember the classic fan trope: everything we did well last year will stay the same and everything we did poorly will improve

And then injuries happen.

The over-reactions on this board are always entertaining. If the Gophers lose, or they don't play as well as the "fans" think they should, then the Gophers are the worst team in the world, and won't win another game.

The Gophers are going to win 7, 8 or 9 games this year. If the injury situation gets worse, it could be a 7-win season. If they get healthy, and get some cohesion with the O-Line and D-backs, then a 9-win season is completely within reach.

Given a choice, I choose to be optimistic until facts - not fears or opinion - require me to re-assess the situation.

I'm worried about this schedule, too - tougher than last year by a notch, though IL beat us last year and we almost lost at home to Purdue! We got tougher in the tough games near the end of the season - maybe that will happen again.

Didn't want to start a new thread so figured this was a good spot for it.

We'll be 3-1 in two weeks.

Then we can make predictions. Some people will heal. Others will get hurt.

But other teams get injured too, ya know. It's not like NW, Ill., Iowa are brimming with depth. Michigan and Nebraska and Wisconsin are here. Purdue is Purdue. Colorado State is better than Purdue is.

We'll be fine. Relax.

What makes the Gophers' B1G schedule tough is they open B1G play on the road against two teams that appear to have vastly improved over last season - NW & Purdue followed by a vengeful NE at home.

These three games are very pivotal for the whole season.

The saving grace is they get a bye before the next game at home with MI.

It seems like every game is a must win.

You seem to be in good spirits. Does it have anything to do with the Morse code next to the bottom of your message?

Not sure if I would put Purdue in that conversation just yet. They lost to Marshall who just lost to Ohio.

.

Purdue is vastly improved? By what measure. They are 1-1, losing to Marshall by throwing multiple Pick-6s. They beat Indiana State, a 6-6 Missouri Valley Conference team. They will likely be 1-4 by the time we play them, as they pay VaTech, Bowling Green and MSU before that. Excepting horrible injuries, if we can't beat them, we might as well pack it in, even on the road. Colorado State is better than Purdue.

Our first two games. TCU and Colorado State. Combined...has another B1G team played any tougher competition than us so far...? In my honest opinion...I don't think so. What are your thoughts on this?

I very much doubt this. They were elevated above cellar dweller status the last few years on the arm of Grayson Gray and probably the coaching of Jim Mcelwain and staff, who have moved on to the SEC.

Colorado State was one of the worst programs in the FBS prior to the arrival of the aforementioned, if you put any stock in the F+ stats to clear out some of the interconference noise.

They were daring us to pass all game, and we couldn't do it. That's more of an indictment of our offense being bad than them being Some sort of Boise State level BCS buster type program. Look for them to fall back to earth pretty hard this season.

I'll take the over. They have new coaches who people feel are of quality and up and coming. They played without their best player. They had a game plan tailored to us, they'll have a different one next week tailored to that opponent. Remember, we were a bad matchup for them...we have a strong secondary, they like to pass. We are a run based team and their weakness was a poor run defense.

I'll eat crow if we beat Purdue at West Lafayette this year, and I'll give up beer for a week (ahem,168:00:00.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001).
