Kill Press Conference

How? AJ admitted to blind siding Jerry.

You don't understand, Tony Dungy is magic. If your sink is clogged, you can say "If Tony Dungy was here, that sink wouldn't have been clogged." The very words "Tony Dungy" have magical powers, they are a solution to anything.

Sure it does. There are coaches much better coaches than Kill all over America who would have figured out a way to handle the situation with Barker without it becoming a national news story.

Tough to do when the kid sends you an e-mail he is quitting, won't respond to you, and then releases said e-mail to the media and goes on an interview tour.

Barker never presented his concerns to Kill in a manner of discussion or face to face. He hid behind his computer in dealing with Kill for fear of being "manipulated"

As I, and many other have said, before writing that e-mail. Have a sit down with coach Kill, your parents, Norwood, Kaler, your moms best friend, whomever else you'd like to include and talk it out. If things can;t be resolved, leave the team as an adult and move on with your life.

An absolutley awful way to handle it.

How many athletes would've handled the situation better than AJ? How many college athletes would play Dr. and trainer like AJ?

You're either committed to the way things are done or your not; there is no such thing as life in between! He, admittedly, defied the trainers. It's not their first high ankle sprain, and I'm sure they'd take care of it in a proper, timely fashion.

+1. Well said scher125.

I'm glad that Kill is being proactive in addressing this. He's defending himself without being totally dismissive of Barker, which is the right move both from a PR perspective, and as a human being.

I was thinking the exact same thing. I wish the kid hadn't posted that email. Like gopherinphilly said they could have worked this out and he'd be on scholly come January.

Now that is funny.

AJ's dad was too busy running 10 miles a day and eating healthy to deal with such matters.

Nothing to do with this story ... but Phillip Nelson tweets! lol

Heard some1 saying that a cooking show came to their highschool when they were there..so I say teen mom came to mine #boom #mankatowest

If half the football team quits because of this fiasco, look at the recruiting advantage Coach Kill has. "We have lots of scholarships available, and lots of chances for playing immediately. We can't redshirt everyone!!!"

No, we really don't need to ask ourselves that question. It doesn't mean a thing.

Precisely. No one knows how Dungy would have done as a college coach in dealing with an issue like this. College football and pro football are on entirely different planets.

Reading what Barker tweeted re his girlfriend makes it look like he sees himself as a victim.
A victim would rather have you feel sorry for him than take a situation to Kill like a man and have a discussion. If Kill doesn't satisfy you, then you go to Norwood. Schmidt and Doogie said he should have gone right to Norwood. That makes no sense.

It's still got to be paid for. That's real money fool.

Medical non-counters are often paid for out of an NCAA special fund. So it's definitely not any money coming from the 85 schollies, the football operations budget, or even the University at all. Of course it's real money, but not money that affects the football program in any way.

I always chuckle at the Tony Dungy references, like he is the standard every human being should strive for.

You may not know - but I do. I repeat. There are many very successful football coaches all over America who would have figured out a way to deal with Barker without anybody knowing about. This is a huge fail by Kill.

Are you like a magician or something? If you were able to figure out something impossible, surely you could have warned the people of NY, NO, Haiti, Japan, etc.?

In fairness, it's not really Jerry Kill's money. Just like the $800,000 he spent a few weeks ago.

That is exactly correct. He turned my toilet water into wine. I won't say what he used to make bread.

Well that's just ridiculous. Of course there are coaches who would have handled him better than Kill. Many of them are more successful than Kill, and also, many of them are NOT as successful. It's a preference. This is how Kill chooses to handle his guys. This doesn't make him a better or a worse coach, it just means he's not a good coach for Barker, obviously. Kill needed to have a better grasp on who he was dealing with when it came to Barker. At the same time, if Barker was fed up with him, he's gotta handle this a whole lot better than he did. Just inexcusable to do the letter and all that like he did. Both them dudes are just stubborn hotheads IMO and that combo blew up in this situation.

We do know that Tony Dungy never had an incident like this as a college head coach. Of course, he never was a college head coach. No disrespect to the actual Tony Dungy, but tossing his name around like he's a panacea for everything has become a joke. You DON'T know that Tony Dungy would have handled it better.

Why don't schools have a zero-tolerance policy for any athlete writing on the internet for any and all school-related matters?

It could be simple. "If you talk about the University or the team, you're gone."

It's for the good of the student.

Can't agree with you on this one, Go4. Kill has every right to insist that his players follow his rules and the U's procedure for handling this type of grievance. Barker was way out line going public with this. Second, he quit on his team and on us fans before the season had ended. He could have at least been ready for the bowl game. Finally, he whined about not being awarded a scholarship. Kill said that this would be discussed after the season. Remember, he only played in a handful of games in his short Gopher career.

That is part of the problem...instead of Barker doing all he can to get better and be a member of the team, Coach Kill is having to deal with him...and btw, Barker never gave Coach Kill the opportunity to "deal with him". Kill never got a chance to address his grievances before sending out his letter. Barker even stated as much.

I do not blame him for wanting a scholarship...that is natural. How he chose to address this along with his injury which I believe is really at the heart of the problem is another matter altogether. The reality IMO is that Barker is a high maintenance person who nuked his bridge and blaming Coach Kill and his staff for it.

Maybe you should ask yourself how Barry Switzer would have handled the situation. After all, he has a Super Bowl ring...

go4broke's anticipated reply, "That's the NFL and not relevant."

Oh...wait, he has 3 National Championship rings too.

G4B hates Jerry Kill. You can't argue with hatred. Don't try.

Are you like a magician or something? If you were able to figure out something impossible, surely you could have warned the people of NY, NO, Haiti, Japan, etc.?

People who know Tony Dungy have never seen him scream at and belittle one of his players as long as they have known him. And there are many other very successful coaches past and present who have never done it either. A mature person doesn't need to raise his voice to motivate people. By many accounts Jerry Kill is a red-faced little tyrant who often loses control of his emotions and apparently feels comfortable treating 21 year old college football players like his children. This whole fiasco is on Kill because he has progresses beyond a one size fits all coaching style which apparently worked for him in the minor leagues.
