Kill on halftime: "If people don't agree with it, I'm not a very good coach, I guess"

This is what gets me the most. No excuse not to prepare for that considering Missouri wasn't allowing a return anyway.

I seem to remember Myrick having a 50+ yard return. As we have learned with Santoso, you can never guarantee a touchback. MO failed on the touchback in the Citrus Bowl and it is silly to suggest we shouldn't assume every kick will be returnable until it isn't.

Wow...a lot of bashing here. I didn't think this was going to happen today.

Never under estimate the GopherHole's ability to have a melt down after a loss. It happens here all the time. To avoid that a lot of people just stay away for a week or so until our resident "experts" finish throwing their temper tantrums. Another option though and one that I recommend is going over to the Daily Gopher and reading that blog. It has two things going for it. First, they know what the are talking about and second they keep things in perspective.

Below is a link to an example of this. Check out the comments at the end of the article. Enjoy!

And of course the other resident "experts" never come out after a win with "I told you so".

Assume that never happens on the Daily Gopher either.

They do not have anywhere near the same tone and anger that we see here. They are also a lot funnier than the "experts" here. But it is their humor that makes all the difference. You might say that there is a "better class people" there.

Unending brilliance, but less sniping, whining and a hundreds of less posters. Great links though. But the humor?

But unless we start recruiting better, I’m less sold on the "on the rise" narrative beyond our current Mason levels.
Kill has done a lot with what he has to get us to 16-10 in the last two years. To get beyond that and to start beating the better programs, we’re going to need better players.

That said, I'd take .500 in the B1G into infinity

building depth

I would put our starting 22 this year up against any in the conference, except OSU. When they have to sub, or when they get hurt, we suffer.
I won’t take .500 in the Big 10 every year, but if we can hit 5-3 or 6-2 every other year or so I’ll be pleased. Remember, Mason hit 5-3 in conference only twice in 10 seasons.

I think you're setting the bar a bit high.

You’re saying you won’t be happy unless Kill wins 60-75% of his Big Ten games half the time, something that no MN coach has done in the modern era. You have to go back to Bernie Bierman for those kind of numbers.

Looking big picture

Glen Mason, 10 years, 32-48 in Big Ten. Kirk Ferentz, 16 years, 68-60 in Big Ten.
I was not happy with Glen Mason’s record. I would be happy with Ferentz’s record.
Forget 6-2 (although 6-2 is about the only way you even sniff a conference championship). Is 5-3 half the time too lofty a goal?
I’m not asking for Wisconsin-level performance, much less OSU. I think Iowa-level performance is perfectly reasonable.

by kusko_andy on Jan 2, 2015 | 2:57 PM up reply

If you're happy with Iowa then you're essentially happy with 4-4 B1G record every year.

Under the current system that is. Ferentz at Iowa is winning 53% of his B1G games. Obviously he’s had some big highs there though, and that’s what will differentiate Kill IMO. Winning a title. That would take him well above the Mason line.
Under the new schedule I’d love to see 4-5 and 5-4 B1G records more often than not, but even hovering around the .500 B1G mark consistently would be without question the best stretch of Gopher FB since Bierman (and would surpass Mason’s tenure easily). In other words, a BFD which means I won’t assume it will happen. Much like GopherMike, if Kill is able to keep that kind of consistency I’ll be pretty darn happy unless he never wins trophies, has players get in trouble all the time, etc.

Hate to criticize our fine coaching staff, but maybe too much time spent high-fiving Mickey Mouse instead of researching

as Coltrib post-game notes state that "Brantley, a former high school fullback, has gained 55 yards on three fake punt rushes, getting first downs each time."
So, a former high school fullback who has already run fake punts is in position and it appears we didn’t key on him? His blockers (who would normally just pass-rush block on a punt) fired off the line and our response looked confused and surprised. Considering his size, perhaps we should have stacked the box and had some linebackers at the ready. Hindsight, of course, but better preparation could have possibly stopped that refrigerator.

of course we had guys in position

I’m suggesting perhaps we should have had bigger guys in position, or more guys in position, or some stunt to slant and hit him just as he got the ball (in case he got the ball), or whatever else a special team’s coach needs to do in anticipation of that situation. Granted, who’d have thought they’d try such trickery from so deep in their own zone, but considering they’d done it before….
Maybe I’m just pissed off even more today because Gophers could have contributed to the SEC beat down yesterday? Our old mantra: get em next year boys. But I’d rather have conference victories anyway so I’ll get over it.

dunno.

I think simply executing what we had would have been enough. For me, the frustrating thing was that missed execution not any sense that the team wasn’t prepared to stop a fake (since my memory is telling me they had it pretty well covered).

Okay, I went back and looked at it (thanks Sart)

and learned shouldn’t be so quick to comment before watching the film (guess that’s why coaches always say they need to watch the film first before commenting). There’s a great end-zone view of the fake punt on DM and we DID have it covered. Damion Wilson flies to fill the attempted hole for the runner (as he should, as they only needed 3 yards) and that big refrigerator just cut back, filling Damion’s lane with 290 pounds of Frigidaire’s newest French Door model rolling upfield. Others had to cover their wideouts in case the frig can pass, too. They just executed (ran) very well on that play. Can’t really fault Wilson for moving so fast to fill and stuff that attempt. I gottta watch the film first. Lesson learned. On to next year (or, I guess, THIS year as the case may be:)

Get coach what he needs

They need to get Kill the facilities he needs to help recruite today’s top players. It’s my understanding, I haven’t seen them personaly, that we have some of the worst in the nation. Sad to say but it’s a big deal. When you hear the recruiter talking about what brand uniforms teams wear factor into where they decide to play, which I really don’t understand thanks Oregon. until we upgrade the football area I don’t think they are going to have consistent luck getting the 4 & 5 star type of kids. we see what coach and his staff does with the kids he gets, they coach the heck out of them. We live in Knoxville TN, SEC country. The biggest thing about most of the teams here is depth. I told my son before the game that we needed to get the lead and then hang on for dear life at the end of the game in order to win because most of the teams in the SEC are 3 plus guys deep. Just like Meyers is doing at Ohio st. I mean he beat bama with a 3rd string qb that’s what played 4 games, not sure about that number.
You hear Kill bring this up EVERY chance he gets, I’m a little worried if we don’t do something other then talk about it he will eventually leave.
Sorry for the rant. Love my Gopher football
