About this project

Hello! For the past 18 months, I've been working on telling the story of Jarvis Johnson - a basketball star from Minneapolis' De La Salle high school. But Jarvis' story doesn't begin, or end, with his basketball talent. His story started with his love for the game, then blossomed into something special; not only for him, but for everyone who watches him play. But his success hasn't come without challenges. In 2010 Jarvis collapsed at basketball practice. But he didn't just collapse, his heart stopped beating for about 10 minutes. His parents feared they would lose him, but showed an unwavering faith that God would come through with a miracle. The miracle happened. Jarvis not only survived, but after being told he would never play basketball again, he's become one of the top point guards in the country. "The Miracle Story of Jarvis Johnson: The Boy with the Basketball Heart" highlights both how fragile life is, how if you dream, work hard, and have faith, anything is possible, and how none of us should take life for granted.

My personal connection to this story is a strong one. In many ways, Jarvis represents the kind of person myself and a lot of my friends wanted to be when we were in high school. Basketball was my first love in life - I was a late bloomer and was never that good - but I really loved the game. The first time I heard or saw Jarvis was at a state tournament game during his freshman year. At the time everyone knew about a talented big dunker named Reid Travis - but I noticed this little guy who seemed so calm and collected. I looked and saw he was a 9th grader. De La Salle rarely starts freshman on their basketball teams. So I focused on him and at some point in the second half I saw this kid drive the baseline, and do something special. As a basketball fan who loved to play - I recognized he had a special kind of athleticism, on top of his court savvy. I went home and wrote on my facebook wall, something like "I think I just saw a future NBA player whose currently a freshman at De La Salle - remember the name Jarvis Johnson because you're going to hear it again." It wasn't until a year later that I discovered Jarvis' heart attack story. Then I reached out to Jarvis' parents - Tanisha and Curtis - and that's how this process really started.
