Kicker

It's really wild the difference from last year to this year. Something must have changed this year with how he is being coached or how he is practicing or something.

I am beginning to think last year might have just been the aberration.

He was a kickoff specialist (not our FG kicker) for years, including years we desperately needed a kicker. The one season Lanz got hurt and we did K by committee, that committee did not include Kesich even though he was doing kickoffs for us. When Lanz transferred, we brought in a couple transfer kickers to compete for the spot.

My point is that I assume the thing that kept him from even being considered a potential place kicker for us was his accuracy because he's always had a big leg.

That said, I think yesterday's kick was good. I looked at it from a ton of angles and I thought it was good (and not that close). Granted, I don't have the best shot (under the goal posts).

I find it hard to imagine that the special teams coach is so abysmal that he took one of the best kickers in the nation and made him below average.
Right plus, special teams coaches are typically not coaching kickers on technique etc.

Kicking is such a mental thing.....he clearly has the leg just have to get the accuracy back. Hopefully he can get it sorted out and get back to being reliable because we are likely to be in a number of close games over the remainder of the season and a missed FG can be a killer.

Why do some people think EVERYTHING is a coach's fault?
I have never understood this either. Some of it comes from a desire not to bash the players I think but it is strange how quick some are to blame coaches for everything that happens during a game.

Heck, I really don't understand why we have a thread grading the coaches after a game....the coaches and players are completely linked, the poll should be grading the whole team not just the coaches.

A coach can make the greatest call in the world and it will fail if the players don't execute. Coach could also make a terrible call and get bailed out by players making a great play. You really can't separate the two.

There is a book, “A Few Seconds of Panic” written by a reporter that practiced with the Broncos as a kicker. They get into this in it, at least then kickers were almost completely on their own, mostly relying on maybe a kicking specific coach from their youth. They also didn’t take many kicks in practice, as it’s a max effort movement. Brewster comes off as kinda psycho in the book as well.

He's like a golfer who sees his nice draw turn into a hook. Doesn't understand what he is doing differently. They are watching film and watching his leg action in practice. He'll get it going again and win some games for us.

Don't think you get to BIG Kicker of the Year through an aberration. Maybe a handful of games way better than your norm but not a full season.

Why this game of gladiators can be decided by kickers boggles my mind.
Kicking is extremely difficult to do consistently at a high level. Lots of sports are decided based on precision actions that are not based on speed or brute strength.

Think of it like the archer or the sniper or the glass-cannon wizard if you want to use the war analogy.
