And GopherLady's favorite coach craps out in the tournament to a decided underdog AGAIN. Never in my life have I been so happy to see my PPD get busted.

Look at the final 4. What if we could have just????????????????

What wins...

speed, quickness and 3 pt. shooting -

Just a fantastic, unbelievable run by VCU. Could not be more excited to see a little guy get another chance in the Championship.

After Butler won last night, I began thinking that Kansas might have the easiest run to a national title game ever, going by the seeds and then stopped myself-but I really didn't think VCU had a chance today, especially after their grinder versus Florida St. the other night. Butler's been a great story, but I really would like to see VCU in the title game; love the style of game they play and would love to listen to the talking heads continue to defend their stance that VCU didn't belong in the tourney.

My 2nd favorite coach...don't forget Izzo.

VCU is no doubt, the underdog of all underdogs - but I still look at that as a pretty respectable loss. They have been knocking off a lot of good teams, and at the risk of sounding too cheesy, Shaka is a Smart coach. He made KU play his game, he kept his guys small, as he knew that they were not going to win a battle in the paint with Kansas. For some of the 2nd half, Kansas made VCU play their game, but Shaka went back to shooting 3's and doing what they do best. I love Kansas and would have loved for them to advance, but you simply can't be upset about a team like VCU advancing. They embody everything I love about college hoops.

The only thing that sucks is they have to play Butler, I would have rather they met in the NC game.

Shaka is Smart. I read that he turned down a scholarship from Harvard to attend Kenyon College.

Wikipedia has updated him to the Final Four in 2011.

Salary is $325,000 per year.

CBI Tournament may have just gone up a few notches. VCU is reigning Champ of CBI.

Shaka's coaching has been the most impressive part of the whole tournament, he is able to implement both an offensive and defensive scheme for any team in the country...if I were a dormant (Indiana) I would possibly look at cutting ties with Crean right now and going after both Shaka and Stevens.

According to Doug Gottleib the way that Shaka is coaching at VCU, is EXACTLY how Tubby coached at Tulsa.

He added that coaches get big time jobs and are too scared to play that way anymore, as they could lose their job.

So I guess you could say, Shaka is the new Tubby

I can't seem to find a team to root for in the Final Four last year. I'm still bitter about losing to VCU, Kentucky is Kentucky and Cal is still Cal, I can't get behind UConn and Kemba, and I honestly feel that Butler has stolen Purdue's spot in the sense that they took away Purdue's story line last year, and have continued to get lucky while Purdue had there best recruiting class ever derailed by stuff outside our control.

That said if I was an AD looking for a Head Basketball Coach I would get on a private plane to Richmond VA next Tuesday morning with a blank check, and if Shaka Smart isn't on the plane on the way back I stop in Indianapolis and hand the same blank check to Brad Stevens. Either say come hell or high water one of those two would be at a press conference introducing themselves to the local media by the end of the week.

The problem is two of the most penalized, really successful programs in the country are fighting for a spot in the NC game. The good news is they can't both get there, the bad news is one of them has to get there.

Maybe Shaka could put on a coaching clinic this summer. Tubby could do a little off season work of his own and attend. Maybe he could remember how it was done. ;)

I wouldn't say the big-time coaches get scared to play that way. I think they get too full of themselves and forget what got them there in the first place. They believe they have it all figured out and the players must play their system, come hell or high water. They fail to game plan properly to exploit match-up problems, and rarely surprise the opponent.

What I saw today was a Kansas team that tried to play their game at the beginning, pounding them with the Morris twins. I think the Morris' scored 10 of KU's first 12pts. The VCU coach saw Kansas completely dominate the first few minutes, then changed up to pressed the action with his smaller lineup. I think VCU went on something like a 20-4 run. By the time that Kansas knew what happened, VCU was up 10 and KU had to play catch-up the rest of the day. It was an amazing run, and I kept wondering when Kansas was going to get back to playing their power game with the Morris kids. They did early in the 2nd half when they cut the lead down to 3, but they ran out of steam and VCU steadied the ship by switching to a full court trap. Several nice adjustments by the 'Smart' coach.

When was the last time you saw a Tubby coached team do something the other team was unprepared for? He could take a lesson from both Smart and Stevens from this tourney run. Both him and the players could have a lot of fun with it.

Ah, I remember the last time a mid-major program became the media darling making a deep run in the NCAA Tournament - only to see their "rising star" coach lured away by a BCS conference school within days of being eliminated.

I recall things not ending well for that coach and his old school hasn't missed a beat since he left.....

This happens almost every single season. You aren't still referring to Monson are you?

That ends it.

Wat a great weekend. The AZ UConn game was about as good of a basketball game as I can remeber, and the way that the Final 4 is bracketed out the championship game will be 'good guys' vs 'bad guys' regardless what happens Saturday. Fun.

It's amazing the difference between the men's and women's tourney. 7 out of the top 8 seeds make it to the elite eight. The gap between the great and good teams in men's hoops continues to decrease while it's going the opposite way in women's b-ball.

Off topic but I wish Geno would give men's b-ball a run.

No, you don't remember it very well. Because the last time that happened was last year, and Brad Stevens is still head coach at Butler.

Artie V is correct.

Cinderella coaches always leave. Stevens isn't coaching at Butler anymore - Bob McKillop left Davidson - and "The Jimmer" Larranaga also bolted from George Mason.

I think his point was when they leave they fail at their next job.....just look at Thad Matta and Sean Miller

Agreed. Would love to see him get a mens team.

I think he has said the only team he would coach in men would be Duke, and he would only do it because people would say he couldn't. Also, doubt Coach K will go anywhere soon (awaits as he officially becomes head coach of the Lakers ... lol)

So true. Don't forget about Mike Anderson and Matt Painter.
