I never understood it. I saw basically every snap of his career. I'm not an expert but I always thought he looked the part. Hope he has good, long, healthy career. Was a big get for PJ at the time, I thought. Had a very solid career here.

I can understand why he went when he did. Yes, he had a very good college career and not injury prone and solid from a technique side as well. However, if you look at his overall athletic ability he was well below average at his position by the data and at that position the scouts really have a hard line on the data. This is why he was listed some places as a 6th or 7th rd pick as they believed that the NFL scouts would probably not pay much attention to a guy with that low of a RAS at CB.

But I think that you have to credit the Colts scout/GM for looking beyond those things and what else he offers and why in spite of supposedly being less athletic than a lot of WR he matched up against he won at a high rate. So the Colts came in with a more reasonable assessment of him in that he's not one of the top elite prospects at the position but he can definitely play in the NFL.

I mean NFL History is riddled with DBs who didn't seem overly athletic and turned out be very good like Winfield sr.

Winfield Sr. didn't really lack athleticism, just size, but I would say your point remains either way.

Yep. He was one of those players where the experts just overthought it.

His brother was already playing at Mississippi St I believe and most expected Justin would follow him there. Was certainly an unexpected get.

For his position Winfield was not considered a great athlete either at the time. But he came in an era where there wasn't as much film or data available. Once he got into the NFL you could tell that he was a better athlete than given credit for but that wasn't how he was viewed going into the draft. If they had estimated that aspect better he probably would have been drafted higher. But yeah, he did get knocked for being small too. I think you could see how well he did vs big time WR prospects in college and know he had the skills, they just doubted him physically in just about all aspects.

Now, Winfield was considered a better athlete than Walley for sure so I get what your saying there too. Winfield was just considered an OK athlete so when you paired that with being small that's why people doubted him but still, on the field was so good and played for Ohio St that he ended up going in the 1st still. Walley really didn't do very well in most of the athleticism areas outsdie of having pretty good speed.

Walley did poorly in the vertical, broad jump, and shuttles plus not prototypical size. So that's the difference between Winfield going in the 1st and Walley in the 3rd. I don't think there is public data on this for Winfield but I would expect that he would have outperformed Walley in most of these things. But I think Walley has a good chance to make a good career in the NFL.

I ask because all I could find was he watched the second part of practice with an ice bag on his leg.

So far from what I've read, he's only listed as questionable and nothing serious (tests pending for how long out etc). David Long Jr suffered a season ending injury. Perhaps you're meaning him?

Damn that sucks.....good news is that he was really impressive prior to the injury so he should get a chance to earn his spot back once he is recovered next season. But sucks to have his season end before it even had a chance to get started.

Sorry for the late reply. My information came from a Gopher staff member. It’s unfortunate, but like others have said, I’m glad he had the chance to show what he could do before getting hurt. I’m confident he’ll come back stronger than ever.
